Things MN have recommended on threads that you bought but turned out to be crap?

I'll start.

Shark vacuum cleaner.
I should have got another Miele. The Shark is just another average sucker upper.

A Dualit toaster.
After years of cheap toasters that starts off great but soon end up toasting one side more than the other, I listened to the years of recommendations on MN and spend £140 on an effing Dualit toaster just for it to do exactly what allllllll the other toasters do. The only difference is, is that it looks a tiny bit better and as though I have stupid money to throw at ridiculous items like toasters. Never again.

Anyone else?

What other things are always recommended by other Mumsnetters that actually turn out to be a bit shit?

OP posts:

My Dualit toaster was worth every penny. Had it for nearly twenty years, and it always browned evenly. Took it to the skip the day before I read an article in the Sunday Times home bit about how they're deliberately built so that if one part stops working it can be repaired. Still livid with myself.

All the vacuums I've bought at anyone else's recommendation have been shit. My Henry has never let me down so I'm sticking with him.

FippertyGibbett · 24/10/2020 15:45

I bought some French soap recommended in lockdown . My skin felt tight after using it, and it didn’t last very long.
So the rest of the bars are making my drawers smell nice and I’ve gone back to Dove - love it !

FippertyGibbett · 24/10/2020 15:46

I also bought a lip balm in a purple tin (violet maybe ?).
No better than a cheap one so I’ve gone back to Liz Earle.

devildeepbluesea · 24/10/2020 15:50

Really don't get the love for Cos, Toast, Hush. Boxy, shapeless garments that make me look like Mr Strong.

Snag tights are shit. Far too big, not opaque enough and don't hug in the mum tum like M&S ones.

I don't mind my slow cooker, but it's only used every now and then.

OlympicProcrastinator · 24/10/2020 15:57

Mooncups.

Just.....no.

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 24/10/2020 16:02

Probably Penhaligon's.
MrsGrindah · 24/10/2020 16:13

Olaplex.... hair looked exactly the same as it did before

Zoflora .. sorry just don’t understand

Greggs vegan sausage roll.. was desperately hung over and needed to eat NOW...I cried

CoffeeandCroissant · 24/10/2020 16:14

Biscoff biscuit spread, everyone raved about this delicious spread, so tasty, so addictive they said. Bought some to try and it was hideously over sweet oily stuff with the texture of biscuits that had been chewed up and spat out by a baby. Boack!

MrsGrindah · 24/10/2020 16:14

Oh.. slightly off topic but I watched Fleabag cos of you lot too...didn’t get it AT ALL

TweeBree · 24/10/2020 16:23

Greggs vegan sausage roll

OMG, yes, it was so bland and gross.

NOTANUM · 24/10/2020 16:26

Shampoo and conditioner bars from Lush. You got to be kidding!

MumbleJunction · 24/10/2020 16:36

Haha, laughing my head off at some of these!

It's the lakeland heated airer for me. I spent £££ on it and the cover. WTF does it do that a normal radiator doesn't? Confused It takes days to dry the clothes. It is however a well designed clothes horse but a very expensive one if you're never going to plug it in!!

DearTeddyRobinson · 24/10/2020 16:42

Oh I forgot about Doublewear, Benefit primer, in fact most of the make up recommendations. Bloody expensive, made no difference to the appearance of my face apart from greasily highlighting my pores. Back to my powder compact now and look way better.

Greyshaggyrug · 24/10/2020 16:45

@CovidStoleTheRainbow - I have two shark cordless hoovers but agree, I still need to use my proper hoover at least once a week (Sebo - An old one so 2200 watts). The shark is good to zip around with every day and works 100% better on the thicker pike carpets.

I did buy a rubber toilet brush after seeing everyone rave about them on here. I got the More expensive Joseph Joseph one and it’s bloody awful and has scratched the toilet bowl .

Laiste · 24/10/2020 16:46

Tubing mascara. (crap)

and

a Hobs trench coat. £££££££ ! (no better than your average one. in fact it crumples worse)

now off to read thread :)

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 24/10/2020 16:51

@Ducksurprise

I'm waiting to see Eufy. I just can't bring myself to believe the MN hype.
I absolutely love my Eufy-bought after the recent thread and currently my favourite family member-just behind the dog.
Laiste · 24/10/2020 16:53

Another: Astral cream. Just like creme de la mere. NOT.

Greektome · 24/10/2020 16:54

I bought a Miele and it's crap. I'm now having to replace it with something a lot cheaper which will hopefully do the job.

Greektome · 24/10/2020 16:58

And I went to see the play of Fleabag in the cinema. Traumatising and not very funny either.

SteppedOnBloodyLego · 24/10/2020 17:03

@OrtamLeevz

I am toying with the idea of getting a Lakeland heated clothes airer...
Don’t!
Laiste · 24/10/2020 17:19

Greggs vegan sausage roll - tasted like tuna to me.

But at £1 it was worth a go :) (unlike the hobbs trench)

Laiste · 24/10/2020 17:23

I have to say i'm confused now about what hoover to buy for upstairs.

I was going to buy a dyson but heard it's crap so was aiming at a shark. Now i'm hearing shark is crap! Miele then? (i have one of their washing machines which is about 20 years old and is fab. ...)

I use a Henry at the mo and it never blocks, always picks everything up and has a cord a mile long. Just so damn heavy (and likes to roll over dramatically).

as you were.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 24/10/2020 17:23

My (very part time, alas) housekeeper, who used to be head of housekeeping at a very posh hotel, loves my Shark.

Maybe she's being polite? 🤷‍♀️

I just got fed up of buying Dysons for DH to blow them up vacuuming builders rubble.

lioncitygirl · 24/10/2020 17:24

I have a dualit toaster - I love it

I have two shark hoovers and and Miele - when the Miele dies, I’ll get another shark.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 24/10/2020 17:26

@Thecazelets

Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter, in the great 'It's just like Creme de la Mer!' frenzy about 15 years ago.

Clue: No it isn't.

This reminded me of the WW1 music hall song," People keep pinching my butter", (please leave my butter alone...)

Given your username you might appreciate that. 😊
