Things MN have recommended on threads that you bought but turned out to be crap?

I'll start.

Shark vacuum cleaner.
I should have got another Miele. The Shark is just another average sucker upper.

A Dualit toaster.
After years of cheap toasters that starts off great but soon end up toasting one side more than the other, I listened to the years of recommendations on MN and spend £140 on an effing Dualit toaster just for it to do exactly what allllllll the other toasters do. The only difference is, is that it looks a tiny bit better and as though I have stupid money to throw at ridiculous items like toasters. Never again.

Anyone else?

What other things are always recommended by other Mumsnetters that actually turn out to be a bit shit?

No way @Doublechins.... I feel the opposite! It’s alright on hard floors but is shit on the carpet.

DearTeddyRobinson · 23/10/2020 23:12

Footner. Gave me some dry skin on the top of my foot and did fuck all for the hard skin.
Happy with my Shark though, but that could be because its predecessor was a Dyson which was utterly shite.

KenzoBaby · 23/10/2020 23:13

Loccitane almond shower oil - smells vile.
Another vote for Korea Italy cloths.

@Thecazelets

Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter, in the great 'It's just like Creme de la Mer!' frenzy about 15 years ago.

Clue: No it isn't.

Was that 15 years ago? Feels like yesterday...
Queenie8 · 23/10/2020 23:15

I love my shark, I've got the duo clean rechargeable with two batteries. My house is mostly hard floors. I clean and wash the filters once a month. Never going to use anything else. I've had mine 3 years, still as good as the day I got it! 😂

VenusClapTrap · 23/10/2020 23:18

A chuffing slow cooker. Chop stuff up, chuck it in, switch it on and you’ll have amazing easy dinners they said.

No, because every bloody recipe in the book requires ‘browning off’ and other such faff. And all that chopping takes hours. Not quick, not easy. Slow cooker got used twice then went to live under the sink with all the other useless kitchen gadgets that were too good to be true.

Oh yes! I fell for this... I bought some and after the first time of trying ( after waiting for it to be re-stocked) was very underwhelmed.
ODFOx · 23/10/2020 23:19

Gah! I spent £100 on an instant pot because I'm really short on prep time and MN convinced me it would change my life. I read the instructions which showed that the MNpromises of 20 min meals were in fact 20 mins plus heating up time and depressurising time ( ie the 40 mins it would take me on the hob) and never bothered to unwrap the rest of the stuff.

It say in its box in the corner if the worktop for a year. Then the instant pot website ran out of stock at the same time I put it on eBay. Someone paid me £170 in spite of the fact the box was grubby.

Ad3laid3 · 23/10/2020 23:21

*Oh I bought a Trinny London item that was meant to banish lines.
It was bloody useless!
Cakey awful weird stuff. I sold it on eBay for 80% of the price so it clearly works for some!

It wasn't recommended on here though, I got swayed by a fb advert.*

Miracle Blur? I fell for that fb ad too- the stuff is totally meh. I’m reluctantly using it up though but will go back to Benefit Porefessional as soon as it’s finished.

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 23/10/2020 23:21

Proscecco Envy
Saw a beautiful bottle last Christmas. Paid a kidney for it (could buy 4 or 5 of my usual fizzy). Bought it because of how much MN raves about it. No one in the house liked it. Down the drain. Kept the bottle, though.

I LOVE my Eufy Robovac, though. Bought it before the raves started, because it was cheaper than iRobot and fit under the beds. I may call it Dummy, but I do it with love.

I'm with you on this. Need to get up earlier to do prep and brown , only to come home to an insipid watery mass of ... soup , basically, with chewy meat.
Handsnotwands · 23/10/2020 23:24

Oh this is the thread for me [side eyes overdraft]
Nothing sucks like a meile and that’s a fact
Roomba/eufe you still need to clear the floor which is the big that takes time. The sweep round with the hoover / roommate / eufy/ shark is neither here nor there once you picked all the shit up ( see point 3)
Steam cleaner, doesn’t actually vaporise the dirt. You’ve still got to wipe it off so you might as well save yourself the effort of getting it out and heated up and applying it to your grub before wiping it up anyway by just applying a cloth with your cleaning application of choice in the first place
Slow cooker - no one became a domestic goddess by bunging a load of stuff into a thing and being presented with a watery mush 24 hours later
Hush clothes - shit quality / excessively expensive
30 day shred - I’m still unfit and fat
Matched betting - wha???
An “appliance cupboard” awkward to access everything and full of detritus, crumbs, spills etc almost immediately
Those dryer balls - no discernible difference to anything except the fucking racket they make
Give me a minute, I’ll have 20 more shortly

Whererainfalls · 23/10/2020 23:26

That bloody steam mop. It would have been cheaper and just as efficient to take a bucket of tepid water and throw it on the floor.

FlouncerInDenial · 23/10/2020 23:26

Not quite the same, but we've just had some work done on the house.
Got a quote, tried to get another for comparison purposes, other guy blew us out.
DH was about to accept original quote, when I (MN inspired) said "we ought to Google them in case they've got terrible reviews "
A search immediately brought up an old MN thread who said they were great.
And they have been.

Just a local company

Shizzlestix · 23/10/2020 23:27

Very tempted by some weird device for unblocking plugholes.

I know the thing you mean and I too am tempted to buy it!

PuppyMonkey · 23/10/2020 23:28

Remember all those bra intervention threads where if you’re a size 34b in M&S you’re doing it wrong and you’re supposed to where a size 30gg but you have to go to bravissimo - that was all bollocks. Couldn’t stand how tight and uncomfortable they were.

You never see those threads any more I wonder why. Grin

Nikori · 23/10/2020 23:30

Oh, I love my Shark steam mop! I got it over 10 years ago when my eldest was a toddler and it’s still going strong.

Mine was red Lush henna. I looked like Ronald McDonald and it took years to grow out. It was the worse thing I’ve ever done to my poor hair.

@PuppyMonkey I’m here in my 30GG right now. It’s unhooked and has been since about 10:30 this am. Just kind of wearing it like a hammock. Not sure that’s what was intended

Bornlazy · 23/10/2020 23:31

@LoungeLizardLhama

I love my shark vacuum! Granted I’ve never had a Miele so can’t compare the suction and I can imagine other vacuums do have better suction but it’s just so convenient! Everything clips out or off, it’s so handy for going under the bed or doing the stairs or random books and crannies. Love it. I am very disappointed with my wet brush after reading on here about them being so much better than a tangle teaser, is it shite. The tangle teaser is loads better in my opinion. 😤
I love my Wet Brush and have bought one for practically everyone I know. Feedback from those people has been very good too. Horses for courses I suppose Smile
Nikori · 23/10/2020 23:31

Oh, yes, I also tried the bra intervention. I was in agony by the end of the day.

OneFootintheRave · 23/10/2020 23:32

The Mutha Scrubber foot scrubber thing. I ordered one about 5 weeks ago after seeing a recommendation on here.

It hasn't shown up, they don't answer emails and their website had been offline for the last 2 weeks ....Angry

Iola4 · 23/10/2020 23:37

Mooncup...no, no and no, never, ever again. Will stick to my reusable pads thank you.
As a joke I showed DH a pic of a mooncup before buying it...just a pic of it, no explanation...all he said was 'why do you want a plunger?' 😣

Sidge · 23/10/2020 23:38

Oh I love my Shark hoover. As good as my Miele was.

Baby bottom butter was shite - bought some off the back of the MN love, saw that it looked like goose fat and made my skin look like that of a goose and binned it.

A lacy M&S bralet. So comfy! She raved. She obviously didn’t have a rib cage.
