Things MN have recommended on threads that you bought but turned out to be crap?

I'll start.

Shark vacuum cleaner.
I should have got another Miele. The Shark is just another average sucker upper.

A Dualit toaster.
After years of cheap toasters that starts off great but soon end up toasting one side more than the other, I listened to the years of recommendations on MN and spend £140 on an effing Dualit toaster just for it to do exactly what allllllll the other toasters do. The only difference is, is that it looks a tiny bit better and as though I have stupid money to throw at ridiculous items like toasters. Never again.

Anyone else?

What other things are always recommended by other Mumsnetters that actually turn out to be a bit shit?

@PuppyMonkey

Remember all those bra intervention threads where if you’re a size 34b in M&S you’re doing it wrong and you’re supposed to where a size 30gg but you have to go to bravissimo - that was all bollocks. Couldn’t stand how tight and uncomfortable they were.

You never see those threads any more I wonder why. Grin

The people who started the threads have all been asphyxiated by their own bra.
Redolent · 29/11/2020 13:02

Instant Pot. I'm convinced that they'd set their marketing team loose on every single MumsNet thread that mentioned it. Horrible bulky invention.

CunnyLingus · 29/11/2020 13:08

Christmas last year. Instead of buying a turkey we roasted a pangolin instead.

Have had a nasty cough ever since.

I hope that’s a joke

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/11/2020 13:13

I once got some very average leggings recommended here
Fortunately that’s all

HerFlowersToLove · 29/11/2020 13:19

Rosehip facial oil. What a waste of money. Absolutely pointless.

We bought MiL a Shark after the recommendations on here. She has since died (probably from rage at the bloody thing) so we now have it. My god, what a triumph of marketing it is. Utterly utterly shite. My trusty old Sebo has been going for years and is a million times better at everything.

Slow cooker, waste of money, especially if you're vegetarian. No vegetable ever benefitted from being cooked for 8 hours.

It's not bollocks and the threads are still going. If, after resizing, you think the band is too tight then you need to go up in the cup size. It's truly a revelation when you are finally in the correct size bra!

Have to disagree with Op about Shark. Its bloody brilliant and I am horrified how much muck it sucks up. Best household appliance we've ever bought

Whatwouldscullydo · 29/11/2020 13:27

M&s school uniform. No idea why everyone loves it so much its no different to supermarket stuff but 3 times the price.

Aldi and lidl- the odd hidden gem but the worst meat ever and fruit and veg goes mouldy on the way home.

Cheeky wipes pads/pants. Maybe i got a bad batch but the pads weren't soft at all after the first wash and the pants rustled.

Zoflora- smells lovely but the bottle is tiny so whats the point.

Steam.mop. was so excited about the good deal on the h20 or whatever it was, no difference between the appearance after regular mopping and a weird musty smell when you use it.

I do love my slow cooker, menstrual cup and reusable pads though!

DontCryForMeNextdoorNeighbour · 29/11/2020 13:32

Some particular brand of leggings - they were decidedly 'meh'.

maddiemookins16mum · 29/11/2020 13:48

@Wasail

Moon cup. MN goes on and on about these shitty, fiddly, messy things and they don’t work!
Yep.
DuesToTheDirt · 29/11/2020 14:01

Love my mooncup. Wish I'd had one back in my youthful travelling days, instead of having to wave sanitary towels at uncomprehending Chinese shop owners to show them what I wanted to buy!

EffOrf · 29/11/2020 14:08

Steam cleaner, I used it once and the floor was no different to being mopped only more faff

Instant pot, the only thing I use it for is cooking beetroot

I think the key to alot of these posts is unrealistic expectations. Slow cookers for example don't necessarily save time or make life easy, they merely shift the time consuming parts. So if you are rushed in the morning but one of you is home by early afternoon it probably won't benefit you. If you're home in the morning and perhaps work afternoon or evening shifts it's great. Do the prep when you get home from the school run and its ready when partner/teen gets home from school or the switchover between parents. You do still have to do all the stuff you would normally have to do to prep a meal.

Cups I would say are dependent on expectations also. If the aim is to reduce plastic waste and you usually wore a back.up to tampons anyway then it won't bother you realky to back up a cup with reusable pads or period pants. If you don't have the time energy or patience or money to try and find that holy grail of not even any spotting and one that works full time instantly then its probably not for you.

Pet8 · 29/11/2020 16:23

Only thing I fell for was fitflops. Expensive, ugly, uncomfortable and I kept slipping out the sides. Went back to wearing Clark's for my poor old feet.

PlanBea · 29/11/2020 16:50

Another one ignoring the point of the thread and declaring my love for my eufy. After the success of the robovac we also got the doorbell and now the baby monitor. We might get the new model robovac with room mapping and use the current one upstairs. It makes me much less likely to leave trailing wires everywhere.

In the spirit of the thread, though, I did just pay for an online hypnobirthing course that people were raving about, got halfway through the first section and realised it really wasn't for me. Fortunately it has a money back guarantee I'm going to claim on!

yumscrumfatbum · 29/11/2020 16:57

Mane & Tail shampoo/conditioner results were decidedly old mare
Elizabeth Arden 8 hour stuff, smells terrible!

Tartyflette · 29/11/2020 17:22

Escentual Escentric Molecules O1, bought (unsniffed,🙁) after a poster said she followed another Mum around the playground trying to find out what it was, as it smelled so gorgeous.
Well, not on me it didn't. Unless you like weird chemicals and slightly rotting vegetation.

ApolloandDaphne · 29/11/2020 17:39

Definitely Zoflora. I bought several bottles in different scents anticipating my house smelling divine. I got it and realised it smells awful so several years on those little bottles are still lurking at the back of my cupboard!

nonevernotever · 29/11/2020 17:51

I love snag tights! They fit me much better than anything else.

amicissimma · 29/11/2020 17:56

@Thecazelets

Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter, in the great 'It's just like Creme de la Mer!' frenzy about 15 years ago.

Clue: No it isn't.

I'd say that Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter was about the only thing recommended on Mumsnet that's been really good.

But the Waitrose bandits have discontinued it.

Tibtab · 29/11/2020 17:57

Snag, I love the fit but if you catch them on anything they end up with gigantic holes. My M&S standard opaques don’t. I can’t afford £8 for a single wear. I bought some of their Xmas tights as I had a voucher and terrified to wear them as I’m sure I’ll snag them.

EffOrf · 29/11/2020 21:39

Oh yes, Zoflora, the smell made my eyes run and lingered for ages, absolutely vile

SparkyTheCat · 29/11/2020 22:22

Slow cooker - always smells amazing but produces bland watery mush, or maybe I just haven't got the hang of it yet.

Heated airer - is 'all right' with the cover on, and yes to PP that the cable is ridiculously short. DCats adore it, so I guess that's a win of sorts.

Steam mop - now that has been a good buy.
