I'll start.

Shark vacuum cleaner.
I should have got another Miele. The Shark is just another average sucker upper.

A Dualit toaster.
After years of cheap toasters that starts off great but soon end up toasting one side more than the other, I listened to the years of recommendations on MN and spend £140 on an effing Dualit toaster just for it to do exactly what allllllll the other toasters do. The only difference is, is that it looks a tiny bit better and as though I have stupid money to throw at ridiculous items like toasters. Never again.

Anyone else?

What other things are always recommended by other Mumsnetters that actually turn out to be a bit shit?

I actually do love my mooncup so there is that

Handsnotwands · 23/10/2020 23:39

Sometimes still wear my MN scarf too, that must’ve been a fraction per pence wear

Handsnotwands · 23/10/2020 23:40

Oh yes Sidge. The bralet and it’s curling up to form a ring of steel ways

jambeforeclottedcream · 23/10/2020 23:43

We had a shark, the battery didn't last long enough we sent it back. Got a stain instead

Although great customer service. Canadian lady based in Canada who was working on their thanksgiving. And couldn't have been more helpful

OrtamLeevz · 23/10/2020 23:47

I am toying with the idea of getting a Lakeland heated clothes airer...

DramaAlpaca · 23/10/2020 23:48

A pair of Brazilian knickers from M&S.

So scratchy & uncomfortable, and I obviously must have totally the wrong shaped bum for them Confused.

Good job I only bought one pair, as of course because they were knickers I couldn't send them back.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/10/2020 23:51

"Those Korean washcloth things. Made for people with child sized hands so very fiddly and uncomfortable to use. People raved about them though!"

They don't do anything special. Nothing more than a loofah or a body scrub.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/10/2020 23:52

"Footner. Gave me some dry skin on the top of my foot and did fuck all for the hard skin."

It exfoliated my smooth skin that didn't need exfoliating and did nothing for my hard skin.

@LoungeLizardLhama

I love my shark vacuum! Granted I’ve never had a Miele so can’t compare the suction and I can imagine other vacuums do have better suction but it’s just so convenient! Everything clips out or off, it’s so handy for going under the bed or doing the stairs or random books and crannies. Love it. I am very disappointed with my wet brush after reading on here about them being so much better than a tangle teaser, is it shite. The tangle teaser is loads better in my opinion. 😤
Oh I love my Wet brush so much more than my tangle teezer!
heidipi · 23/10/2020 23:53

Sidge yes the bralet - she bloody lied!

Also the springy facial hair thing - nope.

And all the things recommended on the BF threads that instantly stop your nipples cracking and bleeding. LIES.

It was the useless Waitrose bum cream that brought me to MN in the first place, but still I kept falling for stuff

Fink · 23/10/2020 23:54

Slow cooker
Bra intervention
Zoflora

On the other hand, I got some bloody brilliant recommendations this summer for a coffee machine and holiday insurance against FCO advice. And I am properly in love with my mooncup, although I bought the first one before I saw anything on MN about them so not a direct purchase. And I got an amazing winter coat after asking for advice on here a couple of years back. Overall, most things I've bought from MN advice have been spot on.

I'm looking for a new vacuum cleaner now so will read the Miele etc, debate with interest. I've been disappointed with the suction on the two last machines we've had.

Takethewinefromtheswine · 23/10/2020 23:55

Agree the Bottom Butter was shit on me, but dd was a baby at the time, so didn't go to waste.
Love my Korea Italy cloths.
Never got the MN scarf love.
NEVER fell for the MN haircut, despite many photos proclaiming its efficacy...

30not13 · 23/10/2020 23:55

Babyliss big hair

Too heavy and big to handle and hair gets knotted up everytime burning my scalp

Gwenhwyfar · 23/10/2020 23:56

@PuppyMonkey

Remember all those bra intervention threads where if you’re a size 34b in M&S you’re doing it wrong and you’re supposed to where a size 30gg but you have to go to bravissimo - that was all bollocks. Couldn’t stand how tight and uncomfortable they were.

You never see those threads any more I wonder why. Grin

I was against the bra intervention to begin with, but am a convert now. Gone from 34B to 32C and it looks better. Still a size that can be found in most places.
Fink · 23/10/2020 23:56

And I can't remember if it was recommended on here or elsewhere, but that bloody machine for sucking out spots I got recently is shite. Just gave me love bite type bruising all over my face and no clearer skin at all.

I am toying with the idea of getting a Lakeland heated clothes airer...
I was just coming on to say this

Thought it would solve all my drying problems

It's hard to hang clothes. Hard to access because there are posts of 4 sides. And it takes ages to dry clothes

Blufandango · 23/10/2020 23:57

@Shizzlestix unless I am doing it wrong, the hair plug hole thing does not work well. It gets a bit out, but nothing like the advert.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/10/2020 23:57

@Iola4

Mooncup...no, no and no, never, ever again. Will stick to my reusable pads thank you. As a joke I showed DH a pic of a mooncup before buying it...just a pic of it, no explanation...all he said was 'why do you want a plunger?' 😣

Love mine and had it 12 years, just need to throw a sheet over it to help it dry stuff.
Peakypolly · 24/10/2020 00:01

Snag tights. Expensive, and not as good a fit as any of the opaques from M&S.

Binglebong · 24/10/2020 00:02

I like mine. I sling it in the wash after every use then stretch it out while wet. It's still small but my hands are childlike so it's all good! You do need to use it dry with your body wet.
alltoomuchrightnow · 24/10/2020 00:03

Babyliss Big Hair. NOT crap but doesn't live up to hype. Really hard to use, makes arms ache, my hair is very fine, the volume lasts about half an hour

Iola4 · 24/10/2020 00:04

Gwenhwyfar...😳 That's a thought!

FlosCampi · 24/10/2020 00:05

Benefit "they're real!" Mascara. Made my all right eye lashs clump into straggly flakey spider legs, the wand was painful and each eye appeared to have only 3 lashes.
Outdoor Ugg boots. They are warm and waterproof, however I walk like the stompiest and fattest of all Thorin's dwarves in them, with the round heavy hooves of a shire horse, and they end at the fattest point of my calf.
Estee Lauder Doublewear foundation. It aged me ten years! The light version was fab though I admit.

alltoomuchrightnow · 24/10/2020 00:07

Benefit They're Real gives you wonderful bonus panda eyes too. With me , took about 15 minutes. Got the photos to prove it. And only wore on top lashes
