I'll start.

Shark vacuum cleaner.
I should have got another Miele. The Shark is just another average sucker upper.

A Dualit toaster.
After years of cheap toasters that starts off great but soon end up toasting one side more than the other, I listened to the years of recommendations on MN and spend £140 on an effing Dualit toaster just for it to do exactly what allllllll the other toasters do. The only difference is, is that it looks a tiny bit better and as though I have stupid money to throw at ridiculous items like toasters. Never again.

Anyone else?

What other things are always recommended by other Mumsnetters that actually turn out to be a bit shit?

I feel like period pants could be in this category.

What do you actually do with them every day? How are there not pairs of bloody unhygienic knickers in the washing basket or wet ones lying around the bathroom? Or daily laundry?

I already knew Moon Cups were bloody awful! Really uncomfortable and plastic turns a slightly pink colour. I went back to sanitary towels, perfectly happy.

TheSockMonster · 24/10/2020 10:09

Any good/bad experiences of the Dyson Airwrap (on fine hair)?

And what about kitchen larder cupboards (like attached)?

I can recommend these though, if you find mask wearing stifling:

@Panicsettingin for the kitchen sink, brilliant, but the bathroom plugholes are click clacks, so I can’t put one of those over the hole.

I love Benefit They’re Real! Huge long lashes, I just take care not to blink too hard so I don’t get panda eyes.

Blownaway1 · 24/10/2020 10:31

Dyson airwrap works very well on fine hair. In fact I tried it on my friends hair which was very heavy and it didn’t work nearly as well.

Afwan · 24/10/2020 10:41

Pixi, Nip & Fab, Ordinary serums, lotions, acids. Destroyed my skin that only a month of prescribed antibiotics could resolve. Gave it all to my DM who has hardier skin than me.

I've discovered I'm the wrong shape for Hush products, all of them Confused

isthismylifenow · 24/10/2020 10:42

The blue pot Nivea for night cream. I just looked like an oil slick for using it, and it didn't help with any wrinkles.

Ditto the coconut oil. Broke me out, my skin looked worse than it was as a teenager. And again, I looked like an oil slick.

DD wears period pants, and we do end up with 1/2 pairs of rinsed out damp pants hanging in the bathroom but generally find this preferable as she is happier (and there is less clearing out of bins and the like) We do pretty much wash daily anyway so they go in with the next wash or I wash a few of them together in a 20min wash cycle. I haven't tried them myself (have a Mirena so don't have periods) but they do seem like a miracle product - I've been recommending them to everyone!

CompleteBarstool · 24/10/2020 10:49

2 summers ago I bought an all-in-one jumpsuit type thing that was recommended on loads of threads.

It was kind of loose fitting and drapey, supposedly flattering.....the family laughed and likened it to a flying squirrel suit.

That went straight in the charity bag!

Semtix · 24/10/2020 10:51

@DearTeddyRobinson

Footner. Gave me some dry skin on the top of my foot and did fuck all for the hard skin. Happy with my Shark though, but that could be because its predecessor was a Dyson which was utterly shite.
To add another MN recommendation - flexitol heel balm is amazing stuff. It was recommended to me by the woman who gave me a pedicure, and it honestly softened my calluses after the first use. Incredible stuff and not expensive
DrGachet · 24/10/2020 10:51

My Shark blew up yesterday after recommending it all over MN

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 10:54

"The blue pot Nivea for night cream. I just looked like an oil slick for using it, and it didn't help with any wrinkles."

Night cream is not about what you look like with it on though.

TweeBree · 24/10/2020 10:55

Shark 4 life!! You need to get the anti-hair wrap one, though.

Floor steamers are evil. I ended up damaging some wood panelling on the first go. Sent it back the next day.

Lumea hair removal thingie. It's a tiny, tiny fraction of the laser power needed to remove hair permanently. Plus, they are fiddly, take ages to do any good-sized area, and you have to maintain it. Go to a proper laser practitioner who uses either Candela or Cynosure brand lasers. 6 visits and I haven't had to shave my legs (or my lip Blush) in a decade.

ginislife · 24/10/2020 10:57

@Firstaidnovice I bought the random plug hole cleaner from a Fb ad. It's really good

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 10:59

"Looks just like a Newtons Chirpody Sponge - really good and £1 in Savers."

That's a really messy thing that does nothing special for my skin.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 11:01

"I also bought one of those springy hair removers. Fuck me, it was the most painful thing I've ever done to myself. "

I actually like that and disagree with you about the Korean towels.
It hurts less and less as you get used to it, same as plucking your eyebrows. Cheap and easy.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/10/2020 11:04

@Iola4

Gwenhwyfar...😳 That's a thought!

Babyliss big hair.

It's no good on thick, curly/wavy hair.

Firstaidnovice · 24/10/2020 11:06

@ginislife I don't even have blocked sinks, I just am grimly fascinated by the idea of pulling all that hair out of one. Maybe I'll put it on my Christmas list Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 24/10/2020 11:07

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale

Hair removing cream down the drain does not clear the hair.

Gilmore Girls isnt wonderful. I watched 3 seasons thinking this must be the episode where it gets good. One whiny selfcentered adult who needs to grow the fuck up and learn to speak rather than quip.

Gilmore Girls ! Teen dd obsessed with it, but Lorelei is so awful ! Agree self obsessed woman who needs to grow up. She is so vile about her perfectly nice parents, horrible to Luke, and tries to force her daughter to stay with controlling greasy haired boyfriend.
FeckArseDrinkGirls · 24/10/2020 11:10

So flora. Loads of people on here were absolutely raving about it. I used a couple of drops in some water to use when wiping stuff down. It took weeks to fully get rid of the stench. It gave me such a headache and I had to open all the windows to dissipate the smell even a tiny bit even though it was the middle of winter

SirVixofVixHall · 24/10/2020 11:14

@FlosCampi

Benefit "they're real!" Mascara. Made my all right eye lashs clump into straggly flakey spider legs, the wand was painful and each eye appeared to have only 3 lashes. Outdoor Ugg boots. They are warm and waterproof, however I walk like the stompiest and fattest of all Thorin's dwarves in them, with the round heavy hooves of a shire horse, and they end at the fattest point of my calf. Estee Lauder Doublewear foundation. It aged me ten years! The light version was fab though I admit.
Laughing at the dwarf boots. Totally agree on the makeup, both of those horrible on me.
notanotherlasagne · 24/10/2020 11:17

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer. Fucking horrible stuff unless you like your hair to resemble stretchy straw.

ArsenicNLace · 24/10/2020 11:20

Urban Decay eyeliner. Someone asking for eyeliner recommendations and a thread with almost everyone recommending Urban Decay eyeliner ( in a particular colour).

Really disappointed with it. Was very dry and didn't apply well at all.

I came on to say this ! No idea what I was thinking but it’s pretty much the only thing I’ve ever charity shopped without wearing it outside.

The Ordinary. Maybe they work eventually but the tiny glass bottles all seem to get knocked. Never been able to get one to last more than 2 weeks.

Perfume. When will I learn that someone else’s idea of “smells like summer” can mean anything from oranges to cut grass. Or Spanish drains from my last purchase.
