To think that Marcus Rashford is great

I have never been in a position now or in the past where I’ve ever needed to rely on Free School Meals. However, I have a brain and I’m capable of understanding that people without much money may need a bit of help. Marcus has come from this background and is highlighting an injustice that needs to be highlighted. What the actual fuck is wrong with people/Tory MPs who are briefing against this? SMFH

He is an amazing young man. His mum should be so proud of herself for the hardworking, successful and compassionate man she has raised.

TheQueef · 23/10/2020 12:37

I'm proud on his Mums behalf, she must be bursting.
He's a good lad.

What is SMFH please?

Sally872 · 23/10/2020 12:42

The govt kept school meals going over summer because of Marcus helping them understand what it means to some kids. Yanbu he is a good person.

What's happened to govt now? Have they forgot what they realised? Makes no sense at all. So disappointed. Luckily we don't rely on school meals but feel for those who do.

Disappointedkoala · 23/10/2020 12:47

He's brilliant. His Twitter feed highlighting all the places offering free food to kids made me cry.

ohfourfoxache · 23/10/2020 12:50

YANBU

I hate football because a lot of professional footballers come across as being arrogant tossers. But I absolutely ADORE him, what a thoroughly beautiful young man he is

PhilSwagielka · 23/10/2020 12:51

Given how many footballers are in the press for negative reasons, it's nice to see one who's trying to use his fame for good. Of course people will knock him for it and say he's virtue signalling or whatever. But I hate Man United and I still have a lot of time for him.

TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 23/10/2020 12:53

I don’t think you’re in a minority OP!

I agree he seems so lovely

(Please, please don’t turn out to have done anything awful... 🤞🏼🤞🏼)

Sparklesocks · 23/10/2020 12:56

He’s done so much for so many in such a short amount of time. Truly the best way to use your platform and status and make the world a better place.

Butterymuffin · 23/10/2020 12:56

Absolute star, what a credit to his mum. I have seen tweets praising him from fans of all football teams too - what he's doing is really crossing boundaries. And he is absolutely schooling the government in effective and persuasive communications.

Fajitanita · 23/10/2020 12:57

His Twitter feed highlighting all the places offering free food to kids made me cry.

Yes, they are all wonderful, especially as many restaurants are struggling themselves at the moment with sub standard support from the government; so kind and thoughtful. I've offered to donate to my local one in the hope it can cover some meals, but waiting to hear back.

Fajitanita · 23/10/2020 12:57

And yes, he is wonderful, what am amazing role model both in the sporting world and for everyone else too.

TheEmpressOfUtterBastardry · 23/10/2020 12:58

Yep, he's a good 'un. He's making the most of his influential position and doing something really worthwhile that will make a significant difference to the weakest in society.

Why the fuck can't the actual politicians do that?

zaphodbeeble · 23/10/2020 12:58

He’s amazing

PardonMyFrancais · 23/10/2020 13:03

It’s typical that 15% of people thinking YABU but none have said anything.

Marcus Rashford for PM Grin

CounsellorTroi · 23/10/2020 13:06

Regardless of his sporting achievements he should be BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

AriettyHomily · 23/10/2020 13:06

I think he's great. I hope he's donating a bit of his chunk of cash.

PretendLife · 23/10/2020 13:06

Where is his Dad though? Why is it single mum's and the state that have to feed kids. I've said on one of the other numerous threads on this subject, these celebs need to shame absent fathers into supporting their kids. Men need to call out other men on this. I despair at the way it seems to just be accepted without even thinking about it that men get away with taking any responsibility for feeding their children.

I do believe there should be extra help for poorer families, not across the board though as plenty of parents can afford school meals so any money being spent should be used for the ones in most need.

flaviaritt · 23/10/2020 13:09

He’s amazing.

Definitely! I love him he’s beautiful inside & out. His Twitter feed just shows the government up when places that have been hit with a loss themselves are all standing alongside him to help
TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 23/10/2020 13:14

PretendLife - so say his Dad had buggered off without a second thought. Then what? Any amount of blame wouldn’t have helped his Mum to feed the kids or made the kids feel any better.

Yes the government- the very ones who are saying “oh it’s absent parents’ fault” need to give the maintenance system teeth, track down non paying nrps and introduce real sanctions - including prison - for non payment. But that’s in the government’s gift, not that of hungry children.

Could celebs do something to shame them - maybe or maybe not, without getting into hugely distracting arguments.

But many of the children going hungry don’t have absent Dads. They might do, but they might not. It could their parents are together and still struggling - job loss for one or both of them, illness or injury or any other change of circumstances. It could be that a parent has died. It could be any number of things.

The kids are still hungry and need feeding.

Aragog · 23/10/2020 13:15

He's brilliant. His Twitter feed highlighting all the places offering free food to kids made me cry.

Lots of local FB posts from local restaurants, cafes and take aways are now offering this too. So lovely to see.

LuaDipa · 23/10/2020 13:22

Yanbu. Was apoplectic this morning with the MP who said that parents should be encouraged to take responsibility while providing no assistance whatsoever to the thousands of single parents fighting tooth and nail to make the absent parent do just that.

Agree with a pp, Marcus Rashford for PM.
