To think that Marcus Rashford is great

I have never been in a position now or in the past where I’ve ever needed to rely on Free School Meals. However, I have a brain and I’m capable of understanding that people without much money may need a bit of help. Marcus has come from this background and is highlighting an injustice that needs to be highlighted. What the actual fuck is wrong with people/Tory MPs who are briefing against this? SMFH

Amazed you've not had negative comments yet. I think he's great.

StealthPolarBear · 23/10/2020 14:07

Also agree with a pp that footballers, especially young ones are so often in the press for negative reasons. This is brilliant to see.

VinylDetective · 23/10/2020 14:08

This is a guy who should definitely stand for parliament at the end of his football career.

TicTacTwo · 23/10/2020 14:19

I've read the Twitter feed and it's incredible how many businesses and councils have been able to scramble together some support.

Amazing young man who hasn't forgotten his past. His mum must be so proud

Weeeare · 23/10/2020 14:23

@PretendLife hear, hear!

The child maintenance system really really needs fixing.

Weeeare · 23/10/2020 14:24

But when there’s ‘I don’t know how many kids I have’ Johnson as PM I don’t hold out much hope.

RunBackwards · 23/10/2020 14:28

I think he's great, I especially love the fact that he still seems to have a lockdown haircut Grin although for all I know it's the latest very expensive do.

Feeding the children is incredibly important work regardless of the reasons they're in need and he's absolutely right to make that priority but if I have come criticism, I do wish he'd use his unique position to "ask" men to step up with regard to their parental responsibilities, having been the victim of one who didn't. (As I understand it, apologies if I'm wrong)

Lexilooo · 23/10/2020 14:42

He's fab, I cried reading his twitter today. Him and the Female MP who spoke so passionately in the HoC.

The Government have a bloody nerve talking about parents taking responsibility when they are lead by Boris "absent father" Johnson. Fucking disgraceful bastards.

Aragog · 23/10/2020 14:43

Our local council have decided to provide them, despite the government decision: sheffnews.com/news/free-school-meals-over-half-term/

Aragog · 23/10/2020 14:46

Thequeef

Seems to be a few places in Sheffield offering this now, and the SCC have also said they will be providing food vouchers to any child who is eligible for free school meals.

Mytholmroyd · 23/10/2020 14:50

Yes he has really galvanised everyone - a real leader. His mum must be very proud. I am so ashamed of our government right now.

Elderflower14 · 23/10/2020 14:55

I said to my Mum that it's great to see a footballer doing something positive..
Compared to those two twunts who broke the Covid restrictions in Iceland!!!

newlabelwriter · 23/10/2020 14:58

He's amazing. His twitter feed today is inspiring

FlyingByTheSeatof · 23/10/2020 15:00

What's also so great about him is that he's been so humble and open about his past to ensure children in that position get the help needed and are not forgotten about.

It's a situation people can find themselves in and its nothing to be ashamed about.

Conair · 23/10/2020 15:03

It's amazing that a very rich young man in the prime of his life who will probably earn millions over his career truly cares and takes action... he's not forgotten his roots and has done so much for society.
All too often young footballers have huge egos and are very materialistic which is almost understandable given the amount of money and fame they have.
What a wonderful man!

RunBackwards · 23/10/2020 15:06

Even though we know he's young, do people realise he's only 22? In a world where young people are blamed for everything...

Tomorrowisanewday · 23/10/2020 15:08

I like that he seems to be charitable on a general level. He was asked by the children at a school for the deaf to judge their poetry competition, and started learning sign language so that he could engage with them more. That's commitment!

dayswithaY · 23/10/2020 15:09

He's amazing, Rashford for PM!

dottypotter · 23/10/2020 15:10

Where is his Dad though? Why is it single mum's and the state that have to feed kids. I've said on one of the other numerous threads on this subject, these celebs need to shame absent fathers into supporting their kids. Men need to call out other men on this. I despair at the way it seems to just be accepted without even thinking about it that men get away with taking any responsibility for feeding their children.

I do believe there should be extra help for poorer families, not across the board though as plenty of parents can afford school meals so any money being spent should be used for the ones in most need.

Absolutely where is his father???

beguilingeyes · 23/10/2020 15:16

I love him almost as much as I love Jurgen Klopp...and that's a lot.

To see people rallying round this is just beautiful.

CaraDuneRedux · 23/10/2020 15:19

I really welled up when I saw what he'd achieved this morning.

ViciousJackdaw · 23/10/2020 15:23

Absolutely where is his father???

Rashford's father, Robert, acts as his agent so whatever has happened in the past, they are clearly fine now. But that's just it - we don't know what happened do we? For all we know, his mother might have refused to accept a penny from him, she certainly seems like a proud woman.

I love him almost as much as I love Jurgen Klopp...and that's a lot

Me too! Ich liebe Kloppo!

Janegrey333 · 23/10/2020 15:32

Yes, he’s great. 🙂

Unescorted · 23/10/2020 15:37

He is inspirational - in direct contrast to the heartless self centred hypocritical simpleton who is my MP. This is a man who tried to "help out" in a photo op way at our food bank just prior to the election.

FinallyHere · 23/10/2020 15:39

He has inspired me to write to my MP to give him (the MP) a chance to explain himself, for voting against the drive to provide vouchers in the school holidays when free school meals are not available.

And, yes, we do already support the local food bank
