To think that Marcus Rashford is great

I have never been in a position now or in the past where I’ve ever needed to rely on Free School Meals. However, I have a brain and I’m capable of understanding that people without much money may need a bit of help. Marcus has come from this background and is highlighting an injustice that needs to be highlighted. What the actual fuck is wrong with people/Tory MPs who are briefing against this? SMFH

So who are the 23 MNetters who said YABU?

I note that not one of them has had the courage to post on the thread.

Marcus is amazing.

CoronaIsWatching · 23/10/2020 18:30

Wouldn't mind a ride on his disco stick

CoronaIsWatching · 23/10/2020 18:31

@FinallyHere

He has inspired me to write to my MP to give him (the MP) a chance to explain himself, for voting against the drive to provide vouchers in the school holidays when free school meals are not available.

And, yes, we do already support the local food bank

I'm assuming your local MP is Tory? Vote Tory. Get Tory.
Tlollj · 23/10/2020 18:35

Oh btw I’ve e mailed my local Tory mp who voted against extending this and told him what I think of him.

liverbird10 · 23/10/2020 18:36

He's a good lad.

Yes. Come on, put your money where your mouth is and show some fucking backbone.

Only 22! I think (hope) this is just the beginning. And we need heroes so, so very badly right now.

ChaChaCha2012 · 23/10/2020 18:38

So much respect for Marcus.

Big praise for Gary Neville also. He's doing a good job of keeping pressure on Conservative MPs, as well as doing endless work to support key workers and low income families in Manchester.

randomer · 23/10/2020 18:43

He seems amazing, genuine and grounded.

Fizbosshoes · 23/10/2020 18:53

There is a petition against subsidising MPs meals in both the HOC and being able to claim for meals. sorry I don't know how to post a link Blush
I can't believe MPs can vote themselves a payrise and accept meal expenses and free meals at work, and yet can't see the irony. I think at least one (female) tory Mp has resigned over this. My local MP is conservative. He probably wrote a handwringing fb post about child poverty and then voted against FSM in the holidays because thats his usual form. I don't know anyone that voted for him but lots of people must have done! Confused

tsmainsqueeze · 23/10/2020 18:54

I have just got quite emotional reading his twitter .
What a massive achievement , i hope Boris and his scummy cronies are crawling up their own arses, they should all hang their heads in shame.
God help us through this mess with them in charge, compared to what this one young man has achieved .
I am so proud of him .

nosswith · 23/10/2020 18:55

I have on many occasions drawn attention to the failings and disgraceful/stupid/entitled behaviour of Manchester United footballers.

Marcus Rashford is an exception and deserves all the praise he gets.

MagicoRomantico · 23/10/2020 18:56

Of course people will knock him for it and say he's virtue signalling or whatever.
The phrase 'virtue signalling' gives me the rage. It literally means showing that you have good character. Right wingers have turned this into a BAD thing Confused
Goes to show what scum they are.

PretendLife · 23/10/2020 19:00

Giningit - I didn't say we should punish kids with absent fathers, far from it. I agreed that the poorest kids should get fed. The issue of absent fathers getting away with not paying for their kids should be addressed as well and a good way of highlighting this would be if male celebs spoke up about it.

Not sure why you mentioned Boris, I'm sure the mothers of his children can pursue the matter if he isn't paying maintenance, not as if he can lie about his earnings!

user1471453601 · 23/10/2020 19:01

I totally agree that Marcus is a good guy and doing a much needed job.
it's a shame he needs to but..
It doesn't take away from what he's doing but I think it's a lazy stereotype to say footballers are all overpaid selfish oafs. Some of them are. Some of them start out that way, then mature.

Most professional footballers are from working class backgrounds and many of them do sterling work for charity.

Jordan Henderson, for example, setting up a fund to give help to NHS front line workers. Didier Drogba and his charity work for the communiy y he was born into. Jamie Carragher and his 23 charity that supports underprivileged children in the Liverpool area.

These are just three examples off the top of my head. Maybe a little Liverpool FC excentric, but that's because I'm a supporter. But I still think what I say hold true. Some footballers, like some people everywhere, are scum. Some are really good people try to use their position to help others

thecatsatonthewall · 23/10/2020 19:02

Fantastic to see he hasn't forgotten his roots and nor is he doing this for any other reason than its the right thing to do.

I'm glad the MBE hasn't stopped his desire for social justice.

Maireas · 23/10/2020 19:06

I've signed that petition. MPs on & £80k plus free meals have voted to stop giving free meals to needy children. You couldn't make it up. A Conservative MP who voted against the free meals yesterday claimed £2.35 for snacks. From us, the taxpayer, funding her snacks. Hypocrisy.

Fizbosshoes · 23/10/2020 19:19

And the irony is that a school meal is only the cost of a snack for an MP. (my DS school meals are £2.60/day) I wonder what the meal allowance (if there even is one) for an MP is?
ladymuck111 · 23/10/2020 19:21

I think he is an absolutely awesome man.

EvilPea · 23/10/2020 19:23

Lovely lovely boy!
HIs mum did a brilliant job and what a change from the usual footballer stories we get.

Maireas · 23/10/2020 19:24

@Fizbosshoes- if they are staying in London away from their constituency, they can claim £25 per night for meals.

Giningit · 23/10/2020 19:27

@PretendLife You were clouding the issue by bringing in child maintenance. Of course fathers should support their kids and the the state should go after those that shirk their responsibilities, particularly those not on PAYE. This discussion however was about ensuring that kids don’t go hungry.
God knows how many kids Johnson has out there, however didn’t he deny paternity for one of them? He’s hardly a role model.

That isn't a problem as there are other people who can claim allowances like that.

What is the problem is the House of Commons resturants run at a loss. They should be charged the full central London prices for their food and drink. The £25 pounds would be then one evening meal at a push.

MagicoRomantico · 23/10/2020 19:28

I've just signed the petition too

MagicoRomantico · 23/10/2020 19:29

And shared it. If everybody supporting it got just three other people to sign it, the numbers would be amazing.
