To think that Marcus Rashford is great

I have never been in a position now or in the past where I’ve ever needed to rely on Free School Meals. However, I have a brain and I’m capable of understanding that people without much money may need a bit of help. Marcus has come from this background and is highlighting an injustice that needs to be highlighted. What the actual fuck is wrong with people/Tory MPs who are briefing against this? SMFH

His Twitter feed highlighting all the places offering free food to kids made me cry.
He was brought up a couple of miles from where we live, was at high school with my daughter for a while. Our local FB groups are full of small cafes and restaurants offering to feed children at half term. These are independent establishments which must be struggling financially after being closed for so long. Our local Tesco's food bank donation trolleys were overflowing this morning. So many people stepping up to ensure children get fed and the government couldn't give a toss. Heartbreaking.

blubberball · 23/10/2020 15:40

He's a good egg.

TheQueef · 23/10/2020 15:45

@Aragog

Seems to be a few places in Sheffield offering this now, and the SCC have also said they will be providing food vouchers to any child who is eligible for free school meals.

I'm relieved Ara I know some pockets of deep poverty that relied on help last time and finances are worse now.

The scummy MPs who voted against should be publicly wrung out about this.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 23/10/2020 15:47

He really is great. His mum has clearly done a fantastic job bringing him up. They should both be very proud.

Lovely thread OP. 😊

I hate football because a lot of professional footballers come across as being arrogant tossers. But I absolutely ADORE him, what a thoroughly beautiful young man he is

I feel exactly the same @ohfourfoxache.

I'd bloody love it if he went into politics when he hangs up his boots.

ExemptFromMasksSupporter · 23/10/2020 15:54

I agree OP, he is an inspiration and an example of someone who has experienced poverty and hardship and through hard work he is now in the top tier of the football world. He is using his influence to do such good, so great to see.

(Heart warming to see so many positive comments on here too, there have been many nasty threads on MN lately).

Sparklesocks · 23/10/2020 16:04

Our MP voted against the extension of free meals and there has been a bit of uproar about it on local fb pages. But you still get nasty gits bringing Rashford into it and somehow making him the bad guy and that hes doing it for PR. Ridiculous. So it’s nice to see so many nice and positive comments about his hard work.

JamieLeeCurtains · 23/10/2020 16:10

Marcus Rashford's great.

I suspect the government will cave in again (as they should). Johnson has a fragile ego and he wants to be popular.

Rashford just IS popular.

Giningit · 23/10/2020 16:10

@StealthPolarBear

Amazed you've not had negative comments yet. I think he's great.
Me too! It’s refreshing to see.

@dottypotter

Where is his Dad though? Why is it single mum's and the state that have to feed kids. I've said on one of the other numerous threads on this subject, these celebs need to shame absent fathers into supporting their kids. Men need to call out other men on this. I despair at the way it seems to just be accepted without even thinking about it that men get away with taking any responsibility for feeding their children.

I do believe there should be extra help for poorer families, not across the board though as plenty of parents can afford school meals so any money being spent should be used for the ones in most need.

Absolutely where is his father???

So, do we punish the kids because of their absent fathers? You do know that Boris Johnson is one of these absent dads!

His Twitter feed is so heart warming. He’s galvanized support from restaurants and cafes, as well some Local Authorities who are now offering FSM during half term. It definitely shames this government.

KitchenDancefloor · 23/10/2020 16:30

He makes me hopeful.

I hope that other young footballers can use him as a role model rather than looking to the moral vacuums with mega-mansions who get all the media attention.

It must take a lot of guts to speak out when it would be much easier to be silent and comfortable.

Giningit · 23/10/2020 16:36

One of the worst things about this all, is that the MPs who voted against extending FSMs, have subsidised meals themselves! Don’t forget the increase in MPs pay that they’ll be getting. The choice not to extend FSM isn’t about money, it’s ideological. They wasted millions on Consultants for a start.

The government has water m

I think he’s wonderful, using his platform for such an important cause and making a difference.
It’s humbling as well to see how many local businesses have been inspired to offer free meals for children daily in half term - small business who are struggling themselves.
My son is an aspiring footballer and it’s wonderful to have such a fantastic role model for him to look up too.

DateLoaf · 23/10/2020 16:44

He’s a proper hero. How easy it would have been for him to just keep his head down. What a brilliant young man.

PumpkinPie2016 · 23/10/2020 16:48

I think he's fantastic! His mum has obviously done a wonderful job bringing him up to be a compassionate, grounded, lovely young man.

As a professional footballer, he could quite easily have just got on with his own thing but him raising awareness and campaigning has benefited so many. He was in the Manchester Evening News today helping out at a local foodbank with his mum.

It's lovely to see so many organisations also getting behind him and his campaign.

RunBackwards · 23/10/2020 16:56

TBF, I don't think we know the PM is an absent father to the extent that he isn't supporting his children financially, but yes, the government is also failing to make fathers take responsibility. We can't let the kids go hungry while they continue to fail to do that though.

dottypotter · 23/10/2020 17:22

She shouldn't be allowed to refuse the dads help but expect government to help nor should any woman. That's crazy.

VinylDetective · 23/10/2020 17:41

It’s OK by me. There are plenty of men who are so toxic no sane person would want them in their lives.
NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 23/10/2020 17:41

Just checked his twitter out & I was fine until I got to this... he seems to be a genuinely lovely guy

To think that Marcus Rashford is great
mongoosebaby · 23/10/2020 18:09

What an amazing role model he is. Something football has been missing IMO. Top lad. He should absolutely be sports personality of the year- he's an inspiration amongst the dreadful self involved celeb culture and deserves recognition for that.

chomalungma · 23/10/2020 18:17

Boris Johnson missed such an open goal with this. An easy win.

It's great to see the support Marcus Rashford has generated.

KenDodd · 23/10/2020 18:20

YANBU

I hope he enters politics.

areyoubeingserviced · 23/10/2020 18:21

He’s a lovely young man. When he has been interviewed he comes across as kind and self effacing, definitely not what one would expect of a young, wealthy football player .
He is a credit to his mother.
I have used him an example to my dcs of someone who has used his fame to do great things

Tlollj · 23/10/2020 18:24

I think he’s great. A absolute credit to his mum. Only 22.
