To ask if you have a thigh gap?

I need some reassurance that it's quite normal to not have a thigh gap.. it's my biggest problem area!

I'm not much over 5ft tall, weigh around 7st 10.. six 6 due to my small frame but wouldn't say I was slim, probably in proportion, definitely have a bit of a belly and yeah the thighs... as they go up, they curve in together and touch.

I know I'm an idiot.. constantly comparing myself to others and how their legs seem to be not smooshing together at the top!

I'm early thirties but don't remember ever having one.. is it true that the majority of
Women don't and I'm just being overly perfectionist with this?

Yes I know first world problems.. but I feel like I look horrendous in shorts and had to get it off my chest today!

I'm pear shaped and have one. But as others have side I have quite wide hips. It's a bit weird that people are proud to have them.

MeepleMe · 22/10/2020 11:39

As others have said having a thigh gap is not due to weight/thigh size, it's due to the pelvis size and the distance between each hip socket. Nothing you can do about it at all!

DaddysGirlforlife · 22/10/2020 11:39

I saw on TV once that thigh gaps are mostly down to genetics.
You've either got it or haven't. I haven't & I don't mind.

Junkmail · 22/10/2020 11:40

It’s not really something that everyone just automatically has. I do think it has a lot to do with bone structure and the width of your hips. I do have a thigh gap but then I am also slightly underweight so I’m not a good measure. When I was a stone heavier than I am now my thighs did touch slightly.

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2020 11:41

I have skinny hips and a thigh gap. It's down to bone structure.
Some say that legs should have a penny's width between them.

I've been told that I have short legs - not sure why they felt the need to tell me - but my legs go all the way from my bum to my feet and that's fine by me.

Iheardarumour · 22/10/2020 11:45

GrinBlush No. I don't think I ever had and I don't know why it's "a thing". My daughter (14) says this is an obsession via Instagram that her friends go on about, but she doesn't give it much thought.

IntermittentParps · 22/10/2020 11:45

I do. I am quite thin but I think it's more down to having quite wide hips.

Graciebobcat · 22/10/2020 11:45

No. You need relatively wide hips and slender thighs. I have narrow hips and solid legs. I didn't have a thigh gap even when I was a size 8.

StarlightLady · 22/10/2020 11:53

The only gap l have is above the thigh where both legs meet the rest of the body and it’s bang in the middle. Grin

Craftycorvid · 22/10/2020 11:56

I now possess a very modest thigh gap - after many years of thighs that not only met, they warmly embraced. I’m happy that ‘chub rub’ no longer makes hot weather downright painful and I no longer wear my trousers into holes at the thighs. It’s purely physical comfort when walking - women look great in every shape.

Starlight39 · 22/10/2020 11:56

I used to have (now pregnant and a bit heavier) BUT I think it was mainly due to my shape/the shape of my thighs - they weren't small but I carry the weight on the outside of my thighs rather than the inside meaning a bit of a gap. it was once commented on positively by a man I dated (ugh - a compliment I would rather not have received!) but otherwise nobody really mentions it. I was around 8 stone 3-4 lbs and am 5'3". I honestly wouldn't worry about it at all. Unless you're very slim or it's the shape of your body, I don't think most people would have a gap.

HintOfVintagePink · 22/10/2020 11:57

I’m 5 foot 6 and just under 9 stone. I’ve never had a thigh gap, even when I was a teenager and doing ballet 5 days a week.
A lot of pictures you see of ‘thigh gap’ are people pushing their bottoms backwards!

ktp100 · 22/10/2020 12:02

Oh for an eye-roll or face palm emoji.

Time to stop this shit, OP. These are the thoughts of 13 year olds and even they are being ridiculous.

nameisnotimportant · 22/10/2020 12:02

Never! To be fair I'm kind of glad as I would of lost a lot of phones down the toilet over the years 😂 thick thighs save lives

Montsti · 22/10/2020 12:03

I do. I’m 5ft3 and 8 stone...slim but not skinny..

I’ve always had one though even when I’ve been half or a stone heavier so I do think it’s your build...

PumpkinPie2016 · 22/10/2020 12:05

I'm 5ft 3in and just under 9st. Size 8-10. I do have a thigh gap but I think it's down to build/bone structure rather than bodyweight. I run a lot and my thighs are quite toned because of it, plus any weight seems to be front/outside rather than inner.

FWIW my mum was a semi professional swimmer when she was younger -trained constantly and very fit. She's never had a thigh gap in her life -just not built that way.

I'm sure you look great just as you areFlowers

PickAChew · 22/10/2020 12:07

No and I never did, even when I was 7 stone.

Pinkyxx · 22/10/2020 12:07

I'm 5'1 7stone ish and wear a size 4 or 6. I have a gap between my thighs... I'm very small boned (runs in the family) and no matter what I wear I look like I'm wearing a bin liner lol. My Mum is the same, and my daughter is shaping up the same too. We're all tiny. Being in my 40's I still occasionally get asked for ID because basically I look like a child.. lol The only time I looked womanly was when I was pregnant, hips so narrow they worried I couldn't give birth naturally ( I did!).

Try and relax and enjoy having the body of a woman! We're meant to have curves :-)

Fuckityfucksake · 22/10/2020 12:07

I'm 5'10 size 12/14 with an hourglass figure and have one. I have been 18/20 and still had a thigh gap.
It's to do with bone structure, mostly the hips.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 22/10/2020 12:08

Nope.

I have a thigh overlap 🙈😆.

LG101 · 22/10/2020 12:10

I do not have a thigh gap and even when I was a lot skinnier I don’t remember having one! I’m not over weight or super skinny but I definitely need to apply talc in the summer to avoid thigh rub in the summer dresses 🤣

Happyspud · 22/10/2020 12:12

Huh? This is a thing? I thought it simply depended on leg shape (if you are of healthy weight). Never occurred to me it was a negative.

QuestionableMouse · 22/10/2020 12:13

Nope, and I never have, even when I was tiny skinny teen. It's how your pelvis is built more than anything I think.

Divebar · 22/10/2020 12:16

Who decided it was desirable? Is it the same people who decided you have “saggy” boobs if you can hold a pencil under them? Why are you buying into this bull-shit?

Haworthia · 22/10/2020 12:19

Nope. I carry weight on my bottom and thighs, which is a much healthier body shape compared with those who carry weight around their middles.

Anyway, I thought thigh gaps were passé and now women are supposed to hate their “hip dips”? If you Google “hip dips” you’ll be bombarded with articles talking about them, and links to YouTube workouts promising to help you get rid of them.

Yet another totally normal feature of a female body that we’re told we should despise.
