Am I wrong to turn my nose up at this make of car? Hubby wants to consider them but honestly just the name doesn’t appeal to me.

Any one with a Skoda love or hate them?

We’ve had four. Two top of the range Superbs,
an Octavia and a Karoq. They are brilliant cars and amazing value. Can’t see the point in paying for a badge.

Having said that it is my ambition to own a Yugo
My grandfather owned a Trabant when I was a little girl. It took us about 3 times as long to get anywhere in it, and throughout the whole ride, others we constantly honking at us. I'll never forget my cousin and I, crammed into the back seat, hysterically laughing and showing the finger to all the passing cars.

Skoda was world renowned for its quality engineering as part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, through independent Czechoslovakia and through German occupation 1938-45. The communists eventually ruined it 1955-90, but since then it regained its former reputation as part of VW. Many reports since then have rated the Skoda products as better quality than the VW products built on the same platform.

user1471565182 · 20/10/2020 16:51

the thing is a lot of communist engineering was really top class. Why were the cars so bloody bad and weird looking?

user1471565182 · 20/10/2020 16:53

was he from east germany voteforsanity?

MrsExpo · 20/10/2020 17:10

First time Skoda owner here. (A Roomster..... now discontinued, sadly).

Best car I’ve ever owned. Absolutely love it. Practical, reliable etc Mine is quite old but looking to replace it with a newer one in the new year.

was he from east germany voteforsanity?
No, he was Czech, ironically enough.:) He just loved his Trabants in a weirdly obsessive way. Went through several. It is my understanding that East Germans were only able to buy Trabants, nothing else was available there. Glad those times are behind us.
user1471565182 · 20/10/2020 17:20

ohh I read something about when the regimes started falling, loads of trabants were left in prague b east german refugees

nosswith · 20/10/2020 17:21

Skodas are VWs in all but name and location of build.

user1471565182 · 20/10/2020 17:22

'Despite some looting of car radios, tape recorders, blankets, and even toilet paper and teddy bears left on back seats, the East German vehicles were largely left untouched. ‘The Czechs consider their Skodas to be vastly superior cars,’ one observer said.'

JeffVaderneedsatray · 20/10/2020 17:58

I currently have a Roomster. It is 13 years old and runs like a dream. Sadly discontinued.
Before that I had a Fabia and before that a Felicia.
DH has just sold a 17 year old Ocatvia Estate and replaced it with a Scout.
I love my Roomster - huuuuuge boot and so much head room for super tall DS
I would definitely buy another Skoda but they keep discontinuing the ones I like!

reginaphalangeeee · 20/10/2020 18:01

I had a Skoda a few years ago. It was a good car. Didn’t realise there was any sort of issue with having a Skoda though!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/10/2020 18:01

I'm on my 3rd Skoda, never had even the slightest complaint. There is VW stamped on parts under the bonnet.

AnythingConsidered · 20/10/2020 18:04

I too love Skoda's. Had my first as a company car 10 years ago and always start a car search there. Have had a Fabia, Superb and Octavia over the years.

Coveting the Skoda Kodiaq but can't find a lease deal in my price point at the moment.

DarkMintChocolate · 20/10/2020 22:12

We have had 2 Yetis - loved them, especially the 4 wheel drive one. We now have:

  1. an Octavia - massive boot and very easy to drive. Great for families! What Car used to rate them as the best family saloon - not sure about now!
  1. Karoq - What Car rates it as the best SUV in the £25,000 - £30,000 range

We have never had any trouble with ours!

ekidmxcl · 20/10/2020 22:19

I like them, they are definitely great cars for the price. They aren't perfect - if I was minted I would buy something nicer but it's skoda for now. If you are minted, then get something more luxurious.

toconclude · 21/10/2020 01:12

@ConfusedDotty

Sorry, but I just couldn't have one purely because of the badge. I am not brand aware normally, but when it comes to cars I could just never compromise, and I do feel a Skoda would be a compromise. Also, I have never seen an impressive Skoda.
Well, it's your money to waste, I guess Hmm
DarkMintChocolate · 21/10/2020 08:30

Have a look at the latest What Car, which has their Used Cars of the Year - Octavia Used Family Car of the Year, previously 2013 - 2019! Also Fabia Used Car of the Year in its class.

LeSquigh · 21/10/2020 12:59

We have a Skoda in our household but I never drive it because I hate it. It’s very practical and the boot is massive but I think they are ugly and always think they should be driven by old men. I also can’t away from the stereotype as a child of the 80s. I’m not a brand snob normally but I would definitely rather pay more for a differently named equivalent! They are quite plasticy inside too.

AnotherEmma · 21/10/2020 13:49

It depends on the model and trim, our Octavia isn't plasticky inside at all.

NannyR · 21/10/2020 14:45

My citigo isn't finished off to look as fancy as a VW up, but it drives exactly the same as it is an identical car engine wise just a lot cheaper. The looks of it doesn't bother me that much that I would want to spend extra just for a VW badge.

user1471565182 · 21/10/2020 17:22

Top gear doing some eastern bloc cars (including skoda) in the 80s. My dream.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/10/2020 20:06

When we were looking for a car in 2011 we noticed that the police seemed happy with Skoda Octavias so we had a look at some. After trying a couple, we bought a second-hand Octavia which cost about half the cost of any of the equivalent cars that size available at the time.

It can burn off BMWs on the Autobahn -- so satisfactory! (Such a shame they are introducing a speed-limit and actually enforcing it...) It's comfortable for 600 kilometres in a day, it's quiet, it's robust, it handles beautifully, and it has a boot like a Tardis.

If it finally dies, we will probably get the nearest model that Skoda are making at the time to replace it with.

Glittertwins · 21/10/2020 20:08

Skodas are built off the Audi chassis so you are effectively getting an Audi without the stigma of the four circles.
My mum's Fabia has more in common with the smaller Audi than the VW Polo, far more little extras and a lot less money.

ShanghaiDiva · 21/10/2020 20:13

I have a Skoda: love it.
