Am I wrong to turn my nose up at this make of car? Hubby wants to consider them but honestly just the name doesn’t appeal to me.

Any one with a Skoda love or hate them?

We bought ours btw after hiring an Audi estate and we were given a Skoda instead. After getting over our initial disappointment we ended up really impressed with it. I don't think we would have even looked at one had we not been so pleased with the hire car for the week we had it.

zeddybrek · 19/10/2020 00:12

I had a VW Golf then a Skoda Yeti, drove very similar but didn't feel as cool. If I buy another car I'm definitely buying another Skoda.

Mytholmroyd · 19/10/2020 00:12

On our 2nd Octavia scout estate - very well built and reliable. Essentially a VW. Can highly recommend.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/10/2020 00:14

sbhydrogen you should try the vRS Fabia which is lively.
@LG101 my Octavia vRS had an engine that was stamped with the Audi rings. The cabin is slightly more plastic than a Golf or Audi but the mechanics are rock solid and the brand has had to work hard to overcome the 'skip' image.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 19/10/2020 00:17

I’ve gone from a VW Polo to a Seat Ibiza to a Skoda Fabia, and the Fabia is by far the best value for money. All were really alike to drive. As with all the current generation 1.0 petrol engines, you need to go for at least the 95 PS TSI to get decent acceleration, as the 65 PS won’t do much for other than urban driving, but they have great spec compared to the equivalent VW model and are also stylish looking, now.

Itllbeaninterestingchristmas · 19/10/2020 00:25

I’ve a top of the range scout estate. It’s very fast, very economical and everything fits in it. I wasn’t sure before I got it (it was the length not the make) but it’s very easy to park and I live it especially the winter pack with the heated front windscreen and seats.

MiddleClassMother · 19/10/2020 00:27

They're owned by VW so shouldn't be too terrible. Similar to VW, Audi and SEAT. I wouldn't buy one personally just because I prefer other brands.

OvertiredandConfused · 19/10/2020 00:29

Skoda superb and kodiaq are popular as response cars these days too. Our local air ambulance use them

Rockmehardplace · 19/10/2020 00:30

I have a Karoq and it’s great, also cheap to run.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/10/2020 00:41

You all should stop taking a piss out of Skoda. That plastic skips are still working and people are still driving them. And I am talking about the OLD ones😂😂😂
Now if that's not a quality, I don't know what is.

QuestionableMouse · 20/10/2020 11:41

My last car was a Skoda Fabia vrs estate and I hammered it. Did 500+ miles most weeks, even did a couple of track days without a problem. I needed something bigger so had to sell it but its still going strong now. It was also very comfortable, economic to run and could take an amazing amount of stuff for a reasonably small car.

stickygotstuck · 20/10/2020 11:50

My first car was a brand new Skoda Felicia, in petrol green. Best car ever, reliable, comfortable and a bit of a Tardis. I brought wardrobes back from Ikea in it!

My British colleagues took the piss out of me mercilessly. I couldn't care less. I'm not British so imperviuos to their by then unfounded reputation. At the time, it cost me 2k less than a Fiesta and was still going strong by the time their Fiestas, Fiats, Nissans and Peugeots bit the dust. Ah, karma Grin.

I considered another one for my next car but I thought I'd choose a different brand for varietly. I think I'll go back to them next time! They need a fully electrical model and I'm sold.

Florencex · 20/10/2020 11:51

I know they are decent these days but I cannot get over their old reputation either and would never consider a Skoda (and I have very little interest in cars generally).

JollyGiraffe12 · 20/10/2020 11:52

They are not what they once were and plenty of people love them but I still wouldn’t want one. YANBU.

amusedbush · 20/10/2020 11:54

I've got a VW Polo and have been considering a bigger VW when I upgrade but I'm seriously looking at Skoda and Seat as I'd get more for my money.

DoreenWinkings · 20/10/2020 11:56

We had an Octavia and now we have a Superb. Brilliant cars, they run forever.

Carrotcakey · 20/10/2020 11:58

I’ve got a SKODA Octavia Estate and my Neighbour has an A4 Estate. They are the same car, only his was 7k more expensive for the same year plate.

FWIW I could afford the Audi but I’m not spending 7k on a badge. Car snobbery is ridiculous!

Sexnotgender · 20/10/2020 11:59

@DoreenWinkings

How different is the superb? Looking at possibly upgrading my Fabia estate for more room in the back seat once new baby is here.
AnotherEmma · 20/10/2020 12:06

I have an Octavia and I think it's plenty big enough (space for ERF car seats in the back and still leg room for adults in the front) but you could always go for the Superb if you want even more space. A bigger car to park though.

Allergictoironing · 20/10/2020 12:08

A few years back I was in the market for a new car, so I went on the VW, Audi, Seat & Skoda "build your own spec" sites & did a comparison. Same body type, same options (some were included in base price, some not), same engine as in exactly the same (2l petrol turbo), same gearbox(Audi DSG), same level of internal and external spec, same "toys" (e.g. satnav & audio etc). Couldn't spec the Skoda with the engine & gearbox combination I particularly wanted so sadly couldn't go for that, but the other 3 were literally identical under the body.

VW = £28,500
Audi = £27,000
Seat = £20,000

Closest equivalent Skoda was with a manual (so cheaper) gearbox - £19,000

Sexnotgender · 20/10/2020 12:09

Thanks @AnotherEmma 😊 good to know.

Will go and have a look at both. The Octavia is more budget friendly!

cheeseychovolate · 20/10/2020 12:10

Great cars. Mine is 6 years old and had no problems at all.

RaspberryCoulis · 20/10/2020 12:12

I think your attitudes are firmly stuck in the 1980s.

Sidge · 20/10/2020 12:16

I love my Karoq. Great car.

I’d rather have a Skoda than a Peugeot, Vauxhall or Renault.

AmuckAmuckAmuck · 20/10/2020 12:33

DH was given the works pool car the other week for a business trip that was a top of the range Octavia.
He was a bit skeptical but after spending a day with it, he loved it. I went with him to take it back to the office and it was nice but I personally prefer a higher ride height.
