Exactly that .

‘I do see his point, but all these politicians are about themselves and all as bad as each other.’

So Burnham is as bad as Rees-Mogg, Gove, Trump and Putin? Ok love.

Frazzled2207 · 15/10/2020 18:26

@quest1on
Disagree. The experts are clear that tier 3 will not help.
And in any case he is looking at the broader picture.
He’s doing a terrific job today. Always been a fan. It wasn’t his time when he went for the leadership but his time will come again. I’m sure of it.

Neighbours87 · 15/10/2020 18:29

Agreed have thought this since his work on hillsborough. I was disappointed when he didn’t win the labour leadership

FoxInABox · 15/10/2020 18:31

Dan Carden for PM

rabbitheadlights · 15/10/2020 18:35

NMW is set at 8.72 ph the proposed 67% equates to 5.76 ph. If people could reasonably be expected to live on that, is that not where the NMW would be set?

@slidingdrawers

I've always respected AB but his statement "fighting.... for the health of our people in the broadest sense" is at risk of backfiring imo when local hospitals are overwhelmed and the unintended consequences of that become clear.
That's my fear too.
EL8888 · 15/10/2020 18:48

@dorispiffle l have no issue with his work for Hilsborough. I think it’s to be commended. His current stance is what l have issue with. Not that lm saying Boris is great, he’s an idiot and l have never voted for him

HunkyPunk · 15/10/2020 19:00

He is so lovely in interviews and comes across so well. He's especially good with Shelagh Fogerty on LBC when she interviews him as he always says her name when answering questions and something about that makes me go quite weak at the knees

Your name doesn't happen to be Shelagh/Sheila, does it? Grin

Napqueen1234 · 15/10/2020 19:05

I like Andy Burnham and I think he’s doing a great job. He knows mancunians far better than Boris- our numbers are coming down and if they increase restrictions people will just stop following the rules completely as what’s the point?! We are doing local lockdown and now they’re piling on more measures. Allow businesses to run, keep people going keep motivated to follow the current guidance.

Yes this. There's a risk he looks abit like canute.

Sickoffamilydrama · 15/10/2020 19:11

Fuck No...
When the pandemic started he wrote to my business demanding to know why we were open and threatening action against us, he came across as a power hungry bully with no common sense.

A. We are manufacturing so weren't ordered to close. B, We supply the funeral industry...might be needed in a global pandemic 🤦‍♀️. C, We weren't sure we could claim furlough payments so there was no way I was risking my loyal and amazing staff not having an income to feed their families. D, His contact with us was rude, threatening and frankly I dig my heels in when someone tries to bully or threaten me.

Now he wants to stay open to help save lives....well good job we did that and continued contributing to the local and national economy. Whilst also making sure we followed the Covid guidelines.

RegularHumanBartender · 15/10/2020 19:19

The King in the North indeed.

I think a lot of AB and I very much admire him at the moment.

ZombieFan · 15/10/2020 19:20

You haven't added on UC

bellinisurge · 15/10/2020 19:23

I don't like him very much. But I think he's doing a good job. No other fucker is standing up for us.

Devlesko · 15/10/2020 19:23

Will we get UC too, surely only certain people will be eligible.

rabbitheadlights · 15/10/2020 19:27

UC which will take weeks if not months whenh people who have already faced 7 months of wages below 100% and no doubt already have mounting debts from making up the shortfall? That's gonna be great for MH, child poverty, diet, pre existing conditions etc

Let him avoid his lockdown when the hospitals in his city get overwhelmed Manchester knows who blocked it. Why should I in my low COVID area suffer because Mancunians keep passing covid amongst themselves?

CheshireSplat · 15/10/2020 19:28

He was a bit wet in the Labour leadership election. Wouldn't give an opinion on anything.

However, his speech was very rousing today. Very Jon Snow!

Mellonsprite · 15/10/2020 19:29

He’s done well today and he’s very well thought of in Manchester and surrounding areas.
I met him just after he was elected Mayor of GM and he was very down to earth, and happy to stop and have a chat. In fact used to see him regularly at lunchtimes in Manchester queuing to buy his lunch with all us minions.

rabbitheadlights · 15/10/2020 19:31

@wherehavetheteletubbiesgone ... I'm alright Jack!

FreshFreesias · 15/10/2020 19:31

He’s great!
That poor gym owner who stayed open had a visit from the riot squad! He’s set up a fundraiser with 36k so far.

DynamoKev · 15/10/2020 19:33

I haven’t forgotten this filthy trick form “integrity” Burnham

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/politics/2008/jun/19/andyburnham.daviddavis

Don’t get on the wrong side of him

LakieLady · 15/10/2020 19:36

@rabbitheadlights

I just think it's good to see some genuine passion from a politician, some empathy not written by a speech writer.

I voted for him to be mayor and today especially made me glad that I did.

If I lived in Manchester, I'd be feeling proper proud to have elected him mayor.
Crankley · 15/10/2020 19:40

He's a mayor, not even an MP. Labour need to get their act together, While Burnham was threatening to take the Government to court if it dared to place Manchester in tier three of its new national Covid strategy, Starmer was pushing for a two week lockdown.
