Exactly that .

In the Trouser Legs Of Time he would have led Labour to election victory.
He’s an excellent Mayor and I admire how he is standing up for the health and livelihoods of the people in the region.

Devlesko · 15/10/2020 17:45

Tippexy

Do you mean bandwaggon Burnham?
I've heard the term, but not sure it is that cut and dried.

Carlislemumof4 · 15/10/2020 17:46

Nope. Have always liked and respected him up until now and thought initially he was making some very important points.

Now, while the authorities in Liverpool have taken responsible action, Burnham is looking more and more reckless as figures continue to rise and hospital admissions increase. He's going to have to take some personal responsibility.

He and Keir Starmer have both managed to make Boris look good in the last 24 hours. Boris continues to balance health with the economy, refusing to fully lock down low case areas and targeting restrictions The right approach.

Andy Burnham wants 80 percent furlough and 80 percent of income paid also for the self employed? Who is paying for that 7 months on from the original lockdown.

unmarkedbythat · 15/10/2020 17:46

He was my third choice in the Labour leadership election in 2015 and I don't think now is his time. But he will always be worth watching. He did a lot to push for justice for the 96. He pisses me off no end at times, but I do think he genuinely cares and tends to mean what he says more often than not.

TazMac · 15/10/2020 17:47

I’ve heard of more embarrassing crushes. My friend has a crush on Vladimir Putin. 😂

rabbitheadlights · 15/10/2020 17:49

I just think it's good to see some genuine passion from a politician, some empathy not written by a speech writer.

I voted for him to be mayor and today especially made me glad that I did.

Continues to balance? Hmmm, ok then.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 15/10/2020 17:52

I wanted him to be Labour leader - oh what might have been different.....
Agree on the minor crush, he's taken over from Mark Carney in my world.

Sunshiney1981 · 15/10/2020 17:53

I think maybe he’s got TOO much integrity to be PM Grin

Seriously though, he’s done so much good since he became our mayor. He does lots of work to help the homeless in Manchester, lots of work to help make the city carbon neutral, he was also pivotal in bringing about justice not only for those infected/affected by the NHS blood scandal but also Hilsborough families too.

In a way it’d be a crying shame for Manchester to lose him, then again Westminster needs more proper people like him.

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 17:53

He looks as if he knows it's a non starter really though. The lawyers will intervene here and make them comply with all of it.
At least his sticking up for people. Some might not see it like that though.

EL8888 · 15/10/2020 17:54

No, l think he’s mental. Especially the legal action stuff he has been trotting out this week. Boris has been more polite about that l would, l would have told him tough shit and just steam rolled him. The numbers speak for themselves, it’s not about what anyone “wants”

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 17:54

I'm glad his one of the good guys for the city.

Sunshiney1981 · 15/10/2020 17:59

He’s not ‘mental’, he has a very valid opinion, he’s fighting for the livelihoods of people in the NW.
Unfortunately, as much as some people would like a full lockdown, it will ruin the lives of too many people around here. Businesses will go under. People won’t be able to feed the families and put a roof over their heads. Last thing Manchester needs is more homeless!!

Youandmeareluckytobeus · 15/10/2020 18:01

No.

It's weird to think that it is, in fact, possible that we might one day see a worse PM than Johnson. Imagine if we elected someone like you!
rabbitheadlights · 15/10/2020 18:02

EL8888

Wants? Really? I suppose you don't live in an area expecting to be put in stricter measures? Or have a job that's at risk? Or financial worries of any sort? Any mental health concerns? All of these factors are bad enough, were bad enough under the original lockdown add to that 67% income amongst other things and everything gets worse

OP posts:
EL8888 · 15/10/2020 18:04

@unmarkedbythat l have no interest in a career in politics so no need to worry!

Conversely l live in an area where they are begging to be put into a higher tier with great restrictions, despite the fact the figures don’t reflect a need for that. So yeah lm not thrilled by that either.

EL8888 · 15/10/2020 18:08

@rabbitheadlights in answer to your questions

-yes l do live in one of those areas about to be put into stricter restrictions
-job isn’t at risk and is ridiculously busy
-l am experiencing negative financial implications due to COVID-19
-my mental health isn’t great but has been a bit better for the last month

This is the peril of asking for other people’s opinions, they will give them and they may well differ to yours

trappedsincesundaymorn · 15/10/2020 18:09

Well HS2 is costing more than the 80% asked for and it would be better value for money than a train that very few people will use.

Fizbosshoes · 15/10/2020 18:10

I've had a lot of respect for Andy Burnham and always thought he had more integrity and sincerity than many others.
I cant imagine anyone thinking that about Boris Johnson blustering his way through PMQs

EL8888 · 15/10/2020 18:11

@trappedsincesundaymorn good point, the HS2 doesn’t appear to make financial sense

flaviaritt · 15/10/2020 18:11

Yes.

quest1on · 15/10/2020 18:17

This speech might be the biggest regret of his life if the death toll in Manchester is higher than anywhere else in coming months.

I do see his point, but all these politicians are about themselves and all as bad as each other.

Tellmetruth4 · 15/10/2020 18:17

You can tell he genuinely cares about Manchester. It’s good to see.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 15/10/2020 18:23

The decimation of the economy and industry will kill, and we also all know which areas will feel it more I.e the North.

The government had the chance to get it right the first time round, they failed. Still no adequate Test and Trace system..
