Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

Sushi - I have to drive 45mins.

BournvilleGreen · 12/10/2020 16:58

@tobee I make souvlaki regularly- absolutely delicious!

RedHelenB · 12/10/2020 16:58

@Alloftheboys I was so disappointed when I finally got my first taste of pumpkin pie!

emmathedilemma · 12/10/2020 16:58

Staffordshire oat cakes

TheDuchessofMalfy · 12/10/2020 16:59

I thought I couldn’t get Kendall Mint Cake but it turns out Amazon sell it...

Leaannb · 12/10/2020 16:59

Prawn Crackers...There is/was a lovely Chinese restaurant in Brandon. We went 3 or 4 times a week

Dillo10 · 12/10/2020 16:59

A proper Bahn Mi baguette .. used to have them all the time when I worked in Soho

Fink · 12/10/2020 17:00

Gyros.

To be fair, you can get them around here I just haven't been out.

And some of the cakes that Maison Blanc used to do. I've never found a patisserie I like quite as much as I used to love Maison Blanc, for all their overpriced shenanigans.

I may have misunderstood the 'one thing' part of the original post. Grin

BournvilleGreen · 12/10/2020 17:00

The other thing I crave is Poulet-frites baguette which I ate in Aquitaine 20 years ago. I can roast chicken, I can make chips I can get baguette...but it's not the same!

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/10/2020 17:01

Frying haggis . Its sold in the same way a whole black pudding is and cut into rings for frying with a breakfast fry up.
Plain bread from Mother's Pride
Clootie Dumpling. For DH.
We always take an empty cool box with us when we visit DH family in Scotland and return with it full.

Zaphodsotherhead

Flying Tiger do an amazing gyros spice mix- ( nothing synthetic) so easy to do at home. Their tzatziki blend is fantastic too.

TheGhostofGlumy · 12/10/2020 17:03

Stuffed tomatoes from Greece (I just can't make them the same). Umeboshi onigiri from Japan (dito). The Chinese takeaway just round the corner from my parents house, never found another as good and I live way outside their delivery radius.

tobee · 12/10/2020 17:04

@DuaneBenziesvoice

Cacolac

@DuaneBenziesvoice oh my god Cacolac! I'd forgotten!! Love it!!!Grin

Me too. There's a shop in London that sells a lot of American groceries. They have pumpkin pie for all skill levels, from buy the whole thing ready made, buy a pumpkin pie mix and a pastry shell, down to buy all the ingredients and actually make one. I got the stuff one year to make for Thanksgiving for American friends. They assured me it was done correctly but it wasn't anything like I was expecting. I guess it's only the cultural attachment that makes it special for them, because honestly I wouldn't bother making it again, even using the pie mix easy option.

Picklypickles · 12/10/2020 17:05

I spent a few years living in the North East and the North West with oh, we've now moved back to the Westcountry. I really miss having so many good take-away's nearby, the chippies down here are nowhere near as good, we have one ok-ish Chinese, an excellent curry house and a nice but rather posh pizza place - sometimes I want a big greasy meaty pizza, not artichokes and unicorn cheese you know?! Also nowhere delivers to us.

At least now I'm back home I have no trouble getting Cornish pasties though, life was barely worth living without those!

Ghostofborleyrectory · 12/10/2020 17:05

Cheezils and twisties from Australia- also dosas and any other South Indian veggie food- can't go to Preston anymore :-(

Yesterdayforgotten · 12/10/2020 17:06

'I was so disappointed when I finally got my first taste of pumpkin pie!'

I was like that with pecan pie, love pecans but hated the congealed jelly like filling, it wasn't anything like I imagined 🤢

DelphineWalsh · 12/10/2020 17:08

Proper West Country cider. It just doesn't make it this far north and I'm only in the East Midlands. The pubs and shops round here have big-ish selection of rather average stuff but I want a proper chewy pint of cloudy apple pure lushness that doesn't taste sickly sweet or flavoured with ridiculous tropical syrups like mango, kiwis or lime.

TheExecutionOfAllThings · 12/10/2020 17:08
@TheExecutionOfAllThings the best fish tacos are the ones you make at home. Get some blue corn tortillas from Cool Chile Co or Mexigrocer, a bag of frozen fish goujons, and stir some chipotle paste into creme fraiche, and Roberto es tu tio
That seems so simple. Surely it can’t be?

I am definitely trying that though!

JustMeAndMyTins · 12/10/2020 17:09

Stottie (Geordie in London)!

Sophoa · 12/10/2020 17:12

@Pinkmagic1

Proper, Egyptian falafel. Never been able to get anything even close in the UK

You should be able to get it on the Edgware Road or in any of the Israeli restaurants in north London. Are you near them

TheExecutionOfAllThings · 12/10/2020 17:12

Also shrimp! It occasionally pops up in Lidl but I always miss it.

Chilli cheese fries from Santa Monica CA. Had them years ago and even though I've ordered them in this country countless times and tried to make my own they just never seem to taste as good.

Sophoa · 12/10/2020 17:13

@Ihatemyseleffordoingthis you can get the bagels in any of the Jewish bakeries in any Jewish area. They’re even better than on brick lane
