What’s the one food you wish for but can’t get in your area (but really want)?

Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

OP posts:
piefacedClique · 12/10/2020 16:33

A decent Chinese takeaway. Our local didn’t reopen after lockdown 😭😭😭

Alloftheboys · 12/10/2020 16:34

I want a pumpkin pie 🥧
I made one a few years ago with tinned pumpkin and pre-made pastry (which was very stressful as I hate baking) it tasted glorious.

Proudboomer · 12/10/2020 16:35

East London pie and mash with lashings of liquor.

ToastyCrumpet · 12/10/2020 16:35

Provençal fish soup with croutons and garlic and cheese and aïoli.

Cerisiers · 12/10/2020 16:37

@noideaatallreally

Oh and really miss toast toppers (especially the cheese and ham one) ,Welsh Rarebit that they used to sell in a cafe near me but it changed hands and the recipe is no longer the same, and the mushroom double swiss which burgerking stopped doing years ago and was the only fast food burger I have ever really liked.
The mushroom double Swiss is also the only burger I have ever enjoyed, it was so good, I have searched and tried loads but none are ever the same.....
TimeStoleMyYouth · 12/10/2020 16:38

Mature cheddar cheese
Marmite
Fresh salmon

Shannith · 12/10/2020 16:39

New York bagels. I worked there a lot and from a small deli in Brooklyn I had the simplest but most perfect bagel ever.

Plain, slightly toasted with an inch of full fat cream cheese and another inch of hot crispy American bacon.

I've recreated at home but. it's. Not. The. Same.

ChessieFL · 12/10/2020 16:39

Loads.

M&S tuna melt sandwiches from about 20 years ago.
Duck in plum sauce from our favourite Chinese which hasn’t opened since lockdown.
Prezzo as the one in our town closed last year and nearest one is now miles away.

confusednortherner · 12/10/2020 16:39

@Pyjamaface oh for a proper chippy with salt and sauce!

2Rebecca · 12/10/2020 16:40

Yorkshire fish cakes, I've only ever seen them in chippies, common in Teeside as well as Yorkshire

YourStarlessEyes · 12/10/2020 16:40

I would love to have a Japanese takeaway nearby!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/10/2020 16:41

Scotch pies

BlueBirdGreenFence · 12/10/2020 16:41

Glad to see so many N/Irish feel my pain for soda bread! Thanks for the tip on freezing it; will definitely be bringing some back when I'm next home Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 12/10/2020 16:42

Exciting scraps news --> mol.im/a/8830865 dm link

countrybump · 12/10/2020 16:42

@bearlyactive

Scraps - nowhere I've ever been does them!!
M&S sell chip shop scraps - I kid you not! £1.05. Not tried them, so no idea how authentic they taste!
Noflora · 12/10/2020 16:42

Durian
Satay from a street vendor in SE Asia, with compressed rice cubes and peanut sauce. Nothing in the UK has come close.

Shannith · 12/10/2020 16:43

Also a very specific chicken, mayo and sweetcorn stottie (?) from a sandwich shop in Leeds. It was warm and massively overfilled and tasted like success (first job out of uni).

MotherWol · 12/10/2020 16:45

@TheExecutionOfAllThings the best fish tacos are the ones you make at home. Get some blue corn tortillas from Cool Chile Co or Mexigrocer, a bag of frozen fish goujons, and stir some chipotle paste into creme fraiche, and Roberto es tu tio

Besom · 12/10/2020 16:45

@noideaatallreally me too with the mushroom double swiss

So many things but decent arancini would be good

Shannith · 12/10/2020 16:46

You've got me started now. When I worked in a casino the chef would make me a toasted cheese salad sandwich.

Two bits of toast, butter, thick slices of cheddar, tomato, cucumber, onion and lettuce- cut into two. It coincided with my pre-uni clubbing days and was often the only thing I ate most days.

I've made it since but it's a mere shadow of the glory he achieved.

Fink · 12/10/2020 16:47

Nice Lebanese food. There are a few Lebanese restaurants in my end of London, but they're all just sort of ok. The really nice ones are over the other side of central London (more than an hour away by public transport, 90 minutes' cycle). My favourite ever Lebanese (not in London) closed a few years back. Sad

Butlers Chocolate Cafés in Dublin used to do amazing chocolate pudding. They've still got some great stuff for the chocolate lover but not that pudding.

Rhubard pie. Red cheddar (I know it tastes the same as white, it's just a comfort thing).

And OP, yes you can get fish tacos in London. Lots of places. Even chains like Wahaca do fish tacos.

SquirrelFan · 12/10/2020 16:48

Proper half sours or 'fresh' pickles from Guss's Pickles in New York.
Peach or mango salsa
Anything from Trader Joe's...

TheRealJeanLouise · 12/10/2020 16:48

Like @Proudboomer, proper pie and mash in a tiled restaurant. Hold the liquor though.
A greasy spoon (a proper greasy spoon with a laminated menu with pictures showing every dish) fry up.
Real fried chicken from a good chicken shop (NOT KFC!!).
Bunnychow served in greasy paper with fries seasoned with paprika. That I definitely can’t get anywhere here. I’ve looked Sad

Shannith · 12/10/2020 16:48

Oh god yes. M&S chicken tikka sandwiches. I vividly remember eating one aged about 16 and it was literally the most exotic, delicious thing I'd ever tasted.

I wish they would bring them back, but it's been 30 years (fuck!) so hope is fading.

IfIHadAHeart · 12/10/2020 16:49

Greggs peach melbas. I’ve not seen them anywhere other than in the north east 😢
