Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

Not mine as such, but when my DS was younger i think it was crusha? that did a limited edition ice cream flavoured milkshake that he LOVED.
It ran its course and he still dreams of it years down the line, nothing else he's tried has ever tasted quite the same according to him lol.

I sometimes resort to making my own but proper Staffordshire oatcakes

workhomesleeprepeat · 12/10/2020 16:24

Properly sour green mangoes (seemingly impossible to find, even in London), purple Irish snack bars (why the f do they not sell them here), and Meanies. God I could hammer a multi pack of Meanies right now

rslsys · 12/10/2020 16:24

Proper Nottinghamshire Potted Meat and also Tomato Sausage.

lurker101 · 12/10/2020 16:24

@BlueBirdGreenFence if it helps they both freeze (and defrost) excellently! Might help you transport some over - this has saved me many a time when I’ve missed them 😊

@MumandnotMum

There’s this chain restaurant in Cyprus, couldn’t tell you what it’s called but they did the most fantastic prawns in buttery rice. I went there en route to Larnaca airport 6 years ago and can’t get them out of my head!
Was it the Ocean Basket?
toria658 · 12/10/2020 16:25

Bovril ( since Covid no one is shipping it to NZ)
Battenburg cake
Cod roe
Smiths square crisps
Drifters

Decent independent English chip shop chips ( they don’t do proper chip shop chips here, nasty pre frozen things)

Just read this list and realised I am a total peasant ...Grin

Where I grew up and left at 25, was possibly the best Chinese restaurant, ever. I've never found one as good. They were always rammed.
They did these spring rolls, they were quite large, crispy on the outside and full of beanshoots and duck etc on the inside. Those were the best ever, you could eat one of those on its own they were that tasty and full of goodies.
When we moved I was gutted we couldn't bring them with us.
When we went on a visit 5 years after we left, I was so excited and thought, yep so going there. Nope. It has shut down and was an internet café.
Never been so disappointed.

TommyShelby · 12/10/2020 16:26

Prawns and chips from the chip shop in Anstruther. I had them once about 15 years ago and they were amazing. It’s one heck of a trip from South Wales just for chips though!

Brandaris · 12/10/2020 16:27

Proper meat pies and potted shrimp. Were my favourite foods growing up in Lancashire but almost impossible to get down south!

TheBitterBoy · 12/10/2020 16:27

I used to live in the North East and still miss the egg mayo stottie i used to buy from my local bakery. Also I wish I could get a chewas and onion patty with batter bits down here.

They sell tinned and fresh cod roe in the Morrison’s near me! And the chippy used to do battered roe. Am in North London if that helps
TheBitterBoy · 12/10/2020 16:27

Cheese and onion pattie!

WantANewHome · 12/10/2020 16:28

Anything sold by a French bakery/patisserie.

DinkBoo · 12/10/2020 16:28

Butlers dark hot chocolate with a salted caramel on the side. Always get one the first day back in Dublin, haven't been away so long in years.

(Home made from the ones over the internet just won't cut it.)

nofashionsense · 12/10/2020 16:28

Greek

JillGoodacre · 12/10/2020 16:28

willagedisgracefully · 12/10/2020 16:30

Rissoles from the chippy. A South Wales delicacy

TheBitterBoy · 12/10/2020 16:30

Oh and I had the best veggie burger of my life in a little restaurant in Hanalei bay, Hawaii and I still think about it 14 years later.

RoseCider · 12/10/2020 16:30

@rslsys

Proper Nottinghamshire Potted Meat and also Tomato Sausage.
What’s tomato sausage as it sounds lush! I’ve googled it and can’t see anything come up.
noideaatallreally · 12/10/2020 16:30

Oh and really miss toast toppers (especially the cheese and ham one) ,Welsh Rarebit that they used to sell in a cafe near me but it changed hands and the recipe is no longer the same, and the mushroom double swiss which burgerking stopped doing years ago and was the only fast food burger I have ever really liked.

Notso · 12/10/2020 16:31

Patty, chips and scraps
Hot oven bottom cakes
Five guys

amicissimma · 12/10/2020 16:33

Egg nog.

Starbucks have it round Christmas but they insist on putting coffee in it.

In the US you can get it by itself, around 10 million calories per cup, but yum.

VeggieSausageRoll · 12/10/2020 16:33

A meal from Dragon Express chinese takeaway in Bristol. I dream of it regularly. They did a vegetarian equivalent for every meat dish and it was absolutely amazing. We live about 100 miles away now (and have done for years) and my husband was going to go and actually get me a meal last year for our anniversary, but they had closed down 😭
