What’s the one food you wish for but can’t get in your area (but really want)?

Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme where are you?

You are aware of course that where you are you can probably get things myself and others would love to but can't? Grin

So...swings and roundabouts

I moved back from 13 years in belgium last year, and we lived very close to a frituur that did the best ever steak, roquefort and frites; an amazing sabayon, and a cherry beer. I miss that, and the convenience of being able to nip across the road to buy frites to go with the IKEA meatballs if I couldn't be arsed to cook.

WorldSmellivating · 14/10/2020 16:29

(Vegan) We're leaving Australia soon and I am MOURNING the loss of Weis Coconut Dark Chocolate Ice Cream 😭 Most Vegan Ice Cream is pretty good, some is dire, this one is absolutely bloody delicious, I stand in the kitchen and eat it out the tub.

7Days · 14/10/2020 16:48

I love this thread.

misskatamari · 14/10/2020 16:49

I want a really good butter pie! It's a potato pie, had them lots growing up, but even tho i'm still in the north, they're not really a thing here. DH's friend made one when we went round earlier this year actually, I must ask him for the recipes as it was amazing. And also croquettes from Amsterdam. They're like meaty fried ball things from what I recall and omg they were amazing!!

Fink · 14/10/2020 16:49

@WorldSmellivating I'm not vegan so I'm not much of a judge but I believe Booja-Booja vegan 'ice cream' is supposed to be really good, if you're moving back to the UK.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 14/10/2020 17:14

Graphista oh I know, I'm actually very happy where I am and wouldn't move back to England if you paid me to (unless you psid me enough to buy a big flat overlooking one of the London parks and a remote sea-view cottage in Northumerland... GrinWink no? Grin)

But there are foods I miss - most of which I can cook myself but I miss buying them Grin

I'm in Bavaria. The bread alone is worth staying for, and I possibly have one of the few fussy eater children who'll eat every imaginable kind of bread (black bread, pumpkin seed bread, sourdough bread, "Weltmeister" bread... except the soft white English bread rolls my mum bought specially for him, thinking theyre what fussy children like, which felt yucky when he bit it apparently Grin

Graphista · 14/10/2020 18:49

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme see now I'm jealous! I lived in a different part of Germany for a time, also Netherlands and Belgium.

I miss SO many foods and drink from Northern Europe.

Love that dc love all the bread! I'd love to be able to get a decent rye bread here, the wheat supplemented stuff isn't the same as a pp says, I miss 1001 ways with potatoes, all the cheese, SUPER fresh fruit and veggies that actually taste of something...

I could go on all night!

toodlepipsqueaks · 14/10/2020 19:10

A burrito 😭 the main thing I miss from working in the city!

Yesterdayforgotten · 14/10/2020 19:14

Ooo butter chicken curry from Dubai (never had a nicer one from anywhere) Also thai yellow curry from Australia...it was from a street food place and still had the chicken bones in but omg most delicious version ever had!

Yellredder · 14/10/2020 19:29

Cracker Barrel's hash brown casserole.

Ursula4007 · 14/10/2020 20:44

Peperoni cheesy. Peperonis but made of spicy cheese instead of meat, they discontinued them a REALLY long time ago and I still miss them.

Jars of mussels in tomato sauce. They used to be as common as the picked ones and now you never see them.

Sosmix like you used to get in the 90s, nothing you can get now is the same.

Bernard Matthews turkey burgers with the layer of cheese on one side under the breadcrumbs, from the 80s. Always the best thing from the monthly Bejam shop.

Proper marathons and mars bars how they used to be.

Steak and ale pasties from Ainsleys.

Ursula4007 · 14/10/2020 20:45

Peperami. Not peperoni.

wannabebetter · 14/10/2020 21:04

Rissoles from the chippy up the hill in Mumbles, Jamaican patties from St Paul's, Bristol & it was laverbread but I've found tins online!! To compensate I now have Veda and soda bread! I think this post tells my life story!Grin

Shinycarabina · 14/10/2020 21:08

Yorkshire curd tart..mmm...

Brainwave89 · 14/10/2020 21:43

Really good West Midlands fish and chips. Cooked in beef dripping.

Gatekeeper · 15/10/2020 09:16

I used to work in Palmers Green many years ago and there was a Greek bakery on Green Lane that sold these pastry crescents stuffed with mint ,feta and black olives. Also a small sponge ball fried and soaked in syrup. God they were nice!

whatever1980 · 15/10/2020 09:18

Spicy papaya salad from Thailand - heaven

Leimarel · 16/10/2020 16:15

Bún chả Hà Nội - the best (and cheapest) ever street food in Vietnam.

pepsicolagirl · 16/10/2020 16:34

@Persipan

London Cheesecake. It's not anything you'd recognise as a cheesecake; it's like a puff pastry square with frangipane and jam filling, and white icing on top with these really long shreds of sweetened coconut. (Yes, it is incredibly sweet.) You can't get them outside the South East, and you can't even get the coconut shreds to make your own. And I WANT ONE.
Aldi sell them? I am not south east
merrygoround51 · 16/10/2020 17:14

Loving the references to M&S chicken tikka sandwiches. They were divine

unmarkedbythat · 16/10/2020 17:15

Zoom lollies

merrygoround51 · 16/10/2020 17:16

But really tabbouleh like I had in Tel Aviv. I’ve never experienced anything as fresh since

longwayoff · 16/10/2020 17:59

A proper, authentic West London curry from Southall.

OrtamLeevz · 16/10/2020 18:08

I spent a long weekend in Paris years ago on a very tight budget, and we had several meals in McDonalds (cheapest place for coffee too, and much nicer coffee in French McD's than here).

They did something called a McRib Sandwich. It was delicious but I've never ever seen it in the UK.
