Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

Might sound strange but I like Kohlrabi shallow fried and then cooked with rice in a tomato sauce. Can never find the stuff here, although I've seen Jamie Oliver use it on one of his shows.
It's cheap as chips on the continent but for some reason I've only occasionally seen it on ocado at £3 per head!

Isn’t Soda bread one of the easiest things to babe ever?

Seainasive · 12/10/2020 16:50

Bake!

KilljoysDutch · 12/10/2020 16:50

When I first moved here 19 years ago there was a chip shop in the city that sold "cheese jacks" They were basically a huge lump of cheese surrounded by mash and then battered and deep fried. 6000 calories but they were amazing and now nowhere sells them Sad
@TheExecutionOfAllThings the best fish tacos are the ones you make at home. Get some blue corn tortillas from Cool Chile Co or Mexigrocer, a bag of frozen fish goujons, and stir some chipotle paste into creme fraiche, and Roberto es tu tio
We made this the other night. The Whitby Fish Co do dusted fish goijons seasoned with salt, black pepper and lemon. They were great and came from Tesco. I mixed chipotle paste with mayo and lime juice and it was divine.

@TimeStoleMyYouth

Mature cheddar cheese Marmite Fresh salmon
Where are you that you don't get marmite?!
shitinmyhandsandclap · 12/10/2020 16:51

Gregg's tuna crunch baguette, you can get them but they aren't the same. The bread used to be so crunchy, packed with the tuna mix and so tangy and tasty. Now it's soggy bread and barely any tuna as it's stuffed full of bitter dark green lettuce

Shangrilalala · 12/10/2020 16:51

Stottie cake

Fink · 12/10/2020 16:52

Oh, I forgot, when I lived in the north east there was a butcher in Hartlepool who did sausage sandwiches (also rashers and eggs, but I always went for sausage). 4 whole sausages, freshly cooked, sliced lengthways, in a white bap with butter and ketchup. Best breakfast ever. We'd get it once a week on the way to work as a special treat and not eat again for most of the day.

justanotherremainer · 12/10/2020 16:52

Fresh, Scottish wild salmon. I do eat the farmed stuff you can get now, but it isn’t a patch on the wild stuff.

The colour of wild salmon is a very pale pink, and the texture much firmer, compared to the bright pink flabby farmed stuff.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 12/10/2020 16:53

@workhomesleeprepeat we brought loads of meanies, taytos and Kellogg’s country store back from our last Irish trip.

Meanies are awesome 😋

BlueBirdGreenFence · 12/10/2020 16:53

Seainasive Soda bread is absolutely easy peasy to make but when I go out for a nice cooked breakfast or at supper time after working all day, it would be nice to just have it available.

bettyskitchen · 12/10/2020 16:54

@Ihatemyseleffordoingthis

I sometimes resort to making my own but proper Staffordshire oatcakes
This, so much! I stock up whenever I'm home, I did spot some in our local Sainsbury's (in London) but they're thick and not the same at all.
Fink · 12/10/2020 16:54

@IfIHadAHeart

Greggs peach melbas. I’ve not seen them anywhere other than in the north east 😢
When I first came across them in the north east I was really confused. A peach melba in the north east is an entirely different pudding to the peach melba elsewhere.

See also: parmo. I thought it was just short for parmesan cheese.

DuaneBenziesvoice · 12/10/2020 16:54

Frozen coke.

Leaannb · 12/10/2020 16:55

@noideaatallreally

Gypsy tart - I know they sell it in Kent, but can't get it in Wales. My gran used to make this for me and I have not tasted it in 3 decades!

Decent clam chowder. In Boston USA they sell it in a bowl made of bread - heaven.

New England clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. I got a recipe you would just need to convert the amounts
MsEllany · 12/10/2020 16:55

Koupes - a Greek Cypriot snack food I’ve only ever had from Green Lanes in London, and even then, it’s possibly ten years since I last had one! Didn’t even see them last time I was in Cyprus now I think of it.

Schwartz’s smoked meat sandwich - only available in Montreal, again been craving for ten years.

Fresh made toast from this bakery in Warrington - I used to work on the corner opposite, and we would quite often nip over for two slices. Proper fresh crusty white bread, lightly toasted and slathered with butter. Mmmmmmm.

tobee · 12/10/2020 16:55

Cullen skink - like I had in Cullen itself
Flying fish burgers in Barbados
Soft shell crab burger

Live in London but shielding

Fink · 12/10/2020 16:56

@TheRealJeanLouise

Like *@Proudboomer*, proper pie and mash in a tiled restaurant. Hold the liquor though. A greasy spoon (a proper greasy spoon with a laminated menu with pictures showing every dish) fry up. Real fried chicken from a good chicken shop (NOT KFC!!). Bunnychow served in greasy paper with fries seasoned with paprika. That I definitely can’t get anywhere here. I’ve looked Sad
Bunnychow was on The Kitchen Cabinet this week. Everyone around me was salivating listening to it!
Shayisgreat · 12/10/2020 16:56

@Seainasive when I bake it, it doesn't turn out well 😞

PenCreed · 12/10/2020 16:56

A meringue/cake hybrid called a Jap cake - I think it's called Japonais cake properly. The bakers at home did them and they were lovely. They also did a dense chocolate sponge with tiny chocolate chips in it, chocolate truffles (I was never sure what was in those, it wasn't like the chocolates you get) and marzipan apples. London may have almost everything but it doesn't have Harry Gow sigh.

tobee · 12/10/2020 16:57

Ooh and pork souvlaki in Spetses. Or lamb in a bag in Spetses. Or Spetses fish. A Spetses theme

BournvilleGreen · 12/10/2020 16:57

Strawberry ice cream. There hasn't been any in the supermarkets where I shop for over 12 months Confused
They have strawberry and vanilla or strawberry and cream, but no normal plain strawberry.
Bloody weird!
