Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

Proper fish and chips.
Gorgeous flaky cod with thick chips.
Not the nasty grey, watery fish and chips that taste of 10 day old oil we get here.

Really do not like Haddock. Cod and chips is my absolute favourite.

Ijumpedtheshark · 13/10/2020 07:31

Queso! Miss it so much!

JaJaDingDong · 13/10/2020 07:56

Glengetti tea and really fresh sea fish, straight from the boat

GrossePois · 13/10/2020 08:06

I moved from an area that had a lack of decent restaurants and takeaways to somewhere that has a huge choice of fantastic pubs, restaurants and deliveries but what we did have that was a fantastic Japanese restaurant and a Chinese restaurant. There isn’t anything like that here, only some questionable Chinese deliveries. 🙁

Ooo I miss Gregg's pizza baguettes as well, they were so good and the pizza slices they replaced then with are disgusting and like plastic!

Asda used to do mascarpone icecream which was out of this world, now you can only get this flavour with strawberry/pavlova concoctions. Bring back regular plain mascarpone, the best flavour does not need complicated!

Sunbird24 · 13/10/2020 09:04

Oh, just remembered the Sara Lee pecan danish, that they don’t even make any more. Used to be my favourite pudding ever

iguanadonna · 13/10/2020 09:36

Once I ate the best fish and chips in the whole world ever - on the tiny island of Westray, Orkney. A whole bag of scallops straight from the sea. Unforgettable. Sometimes I fantasize about taking the 3 flights and 1 ferry to get back there just to have it again. If you ever have a chance, go to Westray and get fish and chips, but make sure it's one of the days they're open.

Littlefiendsusan · 13/10/2020 09:43

Proper soft 100% corn tortillas for tacos.

AutumnSummersBuffysCousin · 13/10/2020 09:44

@BlueBirdGreenFence if you want I will send you some soda and wheaten?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 13/10/2020 09:47

Darlington indoor market - savouries mmmm used to get one every saturday after the lunchtime pub session in the county. Basically a fried gooiness of onion, sausagemeat and god knows what all fried to dark loveliness served in a breadroll.

WhateverHappenedToMe · 13/10/2020 09:57

Brunost - Norwegian sweet cheese.

Waitrose appeared to have it recently, but when I went to order it's gone again.

Proper Scottish munchie box. Here in the south there’s nothing like it. The squid ink paella we used to get regularly in a restaurant on the sea front in Barcelona.

A key lime pie I had in Florida once that I still dream about and similarly a spicy tomato pork stew we had from a little hut on the beach in Lanzarote about 30 years ago.

AllesAusLiebe · 13/10/2020 12:34
  1. Good bread. Wink
  2. Authentic Italian ice cream
  3. Strange one . . . I love the tomato ketchup in Spain. It's so sugary and can't find anything here that is vaguely like it. I buy a Polish brand from the supermarket which is good, but still not the same!
LionessRoar · 13/10/2020 12:35

I grew up in Yorkshire and my parents both hated haddock, always had cod and chips. I never even heard of saveloy until I moved down south. I really really miss a good Northern chippy, especially potato scallops (not the ones with fish in, just a battered potato slice), pineapple fritters and scraps. Southern chips aren’t as nice and very few veggie options compared with what I had growing up

BLASTPROCESSING · 13/10/2020 12:38

"Proper Scottish munchie box. Here in the south there’s nothing like it. "

When my cousins from London came to visit a few years ago they got a munchie box for the first time and I think it's the closest thing I'll ever witness to someone having a religious experience.

BashfulClam · 13/10/2020 13:03

An onion pie. It’s like a scotch pie but has more onion and spices in them. They don’t have them outside Ayrshire so that was a shock and a scotch pie is not half as good.
