Inspired slightly by the saveloy thread and those no longer able to attain one.

I went to Key West 6 years ago and I’m still dreaming about the fish tacos. I’ve tried making myself and I can’t get it right. Not a single place in my Midlands city sells fish tacos. I so want them to become popular - can you Deliveroo them in London?

Also Vietnamese. Went to a fab restaurant in China Town and again have had various attempts but not been very successful.

What are you craving that’s hard to get hold of?

@antwacky

Bacon ribs.
Yaaaasssss bacon ribs!! I have to cross London to the only butchers I know that does them (Harts in Peckham FYI), but it’s worth it every time
howmanyroads · 12/10/2020 23:06

@amicissimma Starbucks will make whatever you ask them to! Just ask for an eggnog without the espresso Smile

Noconceptofnormal · 12/10/2020 23:10

Escargot

Decent lobster.

Other unusual seafood.

I really miss it actually.

ViciousJackdaw · 12/10/2020 23:21

Ulster fry. Not the full-on fry up but the processed meat slices that go by that name. Easy enough to find in Liverpool, never seen it anywhere else outside Ireland. Also, boxes of Galtee cheese.

GunsAndShips · 12/10/2020 23:25

Gingerbread man from Birds bakery chain in the Midlands. My Grandma used to buy them for me when I was a girl and she died last year, age 94. I went to Derbyshire recently to do some family history stuff and tried 3 branches but they didn't have any. I was gutted.

TheyreComingToGetYouBarbara · 12/10/2020 23:34

Well, it's a bit of a drive to get to almost anything, where I live, but for something you simply can't get here, even with a drive? Swedish pizza, "Vesuvio" (ham).

Pet8 · 12/10/2020 23:37

Anyone looking for Irish produce in the Liverpool area - the Irish Centre has a shop.

Guineapigbridge · 13/10/2020 02:09

Halva. I hardly ever see it sold here.

CakeyCakeyCakeCake · 13/10/2020 03:26

M&S chicken arrabiata!!!!!!!
Moved to Australia and miss it so much!

BritWifeinUSA · 13/10/2020 03:36

Cadbury chocolate. American chocolate is a joke.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/10/2020 03:49

Beautiful simple frito misto served in a basket with a huge wedge of lemon is my idea of the perfect summer lunch but I've never seen it on a restaurant menu in the UK.

Proper Italian pizza with the really thin base that doesn't go soggy from too much topping.

There was a strawberry and coconut ice lolly we had on holiday in NE Spain a couple of years ago that I became obsessed with.

Sunbird24 · 13/10/2020 04:15

The mango habanero sauce American Dominos does but British Dominos doesn’t.
London cheesecakes - not cheesecake at all but puff pastry with icing and long strands of coconut on top, and jam in the middle

Kote · 13/10/2020 04:16

I'm in the US. I miss chippy chips, real sausages and baked beans!

@BritWifeinUSA Agreed, American chocolate is terrible. I have been able to find Cadburys in a few supermarkets here in Seattle though.

BritWifeinUSA · 13/10/2020 04:22

@Kote the Cadbury’s I find here is all the Hershey’s stuff made “under license from Cadbury” and still has that god-awful American taste. But I am in the middle of nowhere. Is it real Cadbury’s in Seattle? We are going to Seattle in May and I might just be able to hold out till then if there is a promise of real chocolate there and not order massively overpriced stuff on Amazon.

I also miss proper fish and chips. When I go back to see my mum she always stops at a chippy on the way back from the airport, no matter what time it is, so that I can have fish and chips.

And sausages and bacon...now I’m really starting to feel homesick.

the cement one or the cake one?
Hailtomyteeth · 13/10/2020 04:27

Pudding and chips.

(Leeds postcode.)

seayork2020 · 13/10/2020 04:28

After carful research into Cadbury across the world Irish is the best (I am not Irish, well not fully)

SerafinaPekkala · 13/10/2020 04:34

Gregg's sausage rolls. I'm in the ME and pork tends to be poor quality and very expensive (20 GBP for a tin of Spam!).
There was a Greggs stall at an event I went to in Dubai last year and we had several at 6 GBP each. Totally worth it.

HerRoyalNotness · 13/10/2020 04:38

Paua fritters
Combination short soup. When my father lived in Sydney and I visited we’d go to the local dim sum and the soup was amazing. I’ve not seen it anywhere overseas, I googled it the other day so I could make it at home

feistyoneyouare · 13/10/2020 04:42

Steak pudding from the chippy. You can get it in the north-west where I'm from, but not here in the Midlands.

campion · 13/10/2020 04:53

Proper Yorkshire fish and chips ie haddock not cod and fried in beef dripping not vegetable oil.

When I moved to the Midlands I thought we'd just been unlucky with the first couple of tasteless portions. Turns out they were all like that so never buy them now. Good for the waistline at least.

I can't believe, though, that Mary Berry went to Whitby and asked for cod and chips on last week's programme. She needs educating!

Kote · 13/10/2020 06:41

@BritWifeinUSA I've only tried the Cadbury caramel here which tasted pretty much the same to me but admittedly my tastebuds are probably not that refined! I haven't tried the plain Dairy Milk so wouldn't want to get your hopes up. The only ones I've seen are in the American packaging and Google says the ingredients are slightly different than the UK version so yeah probably not as good! I usually stick to Lindt which seems to be the same everywhere (thank God!)

I know the feeling of being homesick and I've only been here since March Sad

serialreturner · 13/10/2020 06:44

@BlueBirdGreenFence

Soda bread. And wheaten bread. Miss both desperately.
Add on proper potato bread and I am your sister.
AllPlayedOut · 13/10/2020 07:20

Beautiful simple frito misto served in a basket with a huge wedge of lemon is my idea of the perfect summer lunch but I've never seen it on a restaurant menu in the UK.

I've seen it on several Italian restaurant menus here in Glasgow. No idea if it comes in a basket though.

Hippywannabe · 13/10/2020 07:25

Pirakka! A Finnish staple which is also known as Karelian pie. It's rye pastry with rice as the filling, served deliciously hot with buttery mashed eggs. I lived in Finland for a year 38 years Go and still dream of them.
Apparently there is a bakery in Covent Garden which sells them but they don't do mail order. If there are any Mumsnetters from who can get them or make them, I would gladly pay postage!
