I rewatched BJ on Andrew Marr yesterday. I’m afraid that everything he said made sense to me. I agree that there have been big mistakes - but - from what I can see - this hasn’t been the smoothest ride for any European country, particularly those that have been badly hit.

Do you know what they’re planning to announce later today?

Everything I’ve read and heard suggests they’re still scrabbling around about the details.

Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 10:43

I do, but I do have faith that - whatever decision is made - is with the best interests of the country at heart.

It's not so much the restrictions that bother me but the way the government have handed out contracts to their cronies who have then proved themselves incompetent. Millions of pounds of public money have been handed over for nothing, they are thieves.

Chantelli · 12/10/2020 10:47

@Plentyofshit hi bj

Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 10:49

Having read a bit about the vaccine trials in Oxford, they are working flat out with some amazing people in charge. I think track and trace would have been an incredibly difficult thing to implement - but it’s working for the majority? There would be errors with any news system. I feel my taxes are being well spent.

OP posts:
luckylavender · 12/10/2020 10:51

@Plentyofshit - that's one person at least Hmm. Personally I find the colossal sums spent on a useless Track & Trace system, millions spent on PPE never delivered & the total lack of consistent responsible communication to be criminal. That's just for starters.

Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 10:52

@Chantelli Wink I’m definitely not a Tory - but would like a reasonable and clear argument as to what exactly is so ludicrous about their proposals.

OP posts:
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 10:53

Why is the Track and Trace system useless - it works for me? As far as I can see it works for the majority...

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2020 10:54

I broadly agree with the approach but question a few things

Eg how much did they expect cases to rise after promoted summer activity.

Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 10:56

A sudden unprecedented demand for PPE was always going to cause big problems...has any other country in Europe not had the same issues?

Keep taking the tablets.
MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2020 10:56

Also sheer frequency and weight of added funding and ability to do fraudulent bounce back loans feels onerous.

October and the return of students took them by surprise so probably not much, I doubt it even occurred to them. Either that or they don't care.
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 10:59

I accept that people think I’m on tablets for thinking this way, but I really want more than just an insult - explanations as to exactly why I’m wrong would be great!

wewillmeetagain · 12/10/2020 11:00

OP don't agree with the government on mumsnet, you will be burned at the stake for that Grin

Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 11:01

Think education was prioritised - as it should have been. Testing was bad for a while, but seems to have been rectified/better now?

OP posts:
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 11:02

Yes! I’m happy to be burned but with good explanations!

OP posts:
GetOffYourHighHorse · 12/10/2020 11:06

Totally agree op. We've had weeks of whinging over the 'oppressive' rule of 6, now as hospitalisations climb the very same people will blame Government for not doing enough. They are doing more as the situation evolves. As restrictions reduced in June as things improved.

Most countries (barring miniscule NZ ) are in exactly the same position. Anyone would think everyone else had got over it whilst England was the only place that hadn't.

The general, erm, intelligent thinking on mn is Boris is a fat dictator whilst #ThankyouNicola (in the same, if not worse situation as she has a very small population but still has rigid rules) is a hero. Nothing to do with politics though, oh nooo...

luckylavender · 12/10/2020 11:12

So many many people are not being traced & the system has cost 12bn so far, Rishi Sunak's figures. Many call handlers have been working for months whilst not taking a call & doing overtime. In Ireland the system works & cost 700,000 €. The government spent many many millions of £s purchasing PPE from companies that didn't exist or were shells owned by cronies. On 30th July at 10pm, the government announced the Greater Manchester lockdown on Twitter on the eve of Eid. I'm trying very hard to be factual & not very very angry. Don't you watch the news or read newspapers?

Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 11:14

@GetOffYourHighHorse that’s good to read, I’m glad I’m not alone! It’s very hard not to judge this by my own personal circumstances, and I want to hear other views that make sense. For me, with my DM having surgery tomorrow and a 2 month recovery - I’m pleased that the government are doing all they can to control the spread. It’s other people that scare me.

luckylavender · 12/10/2020 11:15

And Johnson wasn't on Marr yesterday ...

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 11:20

@luckylavender I do read, not massively. I agree there have been huge mistakes - but the priority is controlling the spread and saving lives. Would another government have performed better? Corbyn? The labour government in Wales are having huge problems too. I think it was right to put a halt in Eid celebrations - this decision was made to save lives, but I agree it could have been announced sooner.

OP posts:
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 11:21

No I rewatched yesterday - from the week before - while I was waiting for yesterday’s episode to upload to iplayer.

OP posts:
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 11:23

Surely a labour government would have been more likely to overspend?
