To largely agree with government guidelines over Covid-19

I rewatched BJ on Andrew Marr yesterday. I’m afraid that everything he said made sense to me. I agree that there have been big mistakes - but - from what I can see - this hasn’t been the smoothest ride for any European country, particularly those that have been badly hit.

I always equated Conservative to less spending, however I do agree that this hasn’t been the case in recent years.
So in fact it doesn't make any sense at all.

DynamoKev · 12/10/2020 12:57

I still think it is useful to speculate how other governments would have handled the crisis
How is that in any way useful?

CoffeeandCroissant · 12/10/2020 12:57

@Plentyofshit

Why is the Track and Trace system useless - it works for me? As far as I can see it works for the majority...

I don't quite understand what your point is OP, you've contradicted yourself several times. So basically even though the government have messed up almost every aspect of this pandemic they've still done a really good job...that's what I'm getting from your posts.

CoffeeandCroissant · 12/10/2020 13:04

@Plentyofshit

Agree huge teething problems for Track and Trace, it’s not great - but I would say even a large number of people fuming about it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work everyone. For every 1 person fuming = 5 who don’t have a problem?
To be effective track and trace should be reaching the high 90's percent wise, not the 60% or so they are achieving (in England, in Scotland and Wales where it's not contracted out to Serco, they do regularly reach 97/98% of contacts).

The app is only a small aspect of track and trace and requires high take up to be effective.

It was insanely difficult thing to have to when everyone was focused on Brexit. We really haven't done that bad. Yes people have died, but people have died everywhere. We suddenly needed masses amounts of stuff that we hadn't previously needed massive of and every country on the planet wanted the same stuff.
In hindsight we can all say "well we should have started lockdown sooner" but at the time everyone was saying it was ridiculous. If we had locked down sooner and hardly anyone had died then it would have been "BJ tanked the economy for absolutely no reason, just scaremongering!"
Now I think we should be opening up not shutting down again, death rate isn't very high compared to case rate and I think it's time it became a part of our every day lives tbh.

Obvious Troy Shill/Troll. No-one can actually be that dim.
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 13:07

@dynamokev - could you explain how it is NOT useful to hear the various different parties views/stance on how to handle the crisis? What’s the point in Parliament if they don’t debate/try to find a different way to do things?

OP posts:
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 13:09

@WhatTheySaid I’m saying they’ve messed up - but I agree with the government guidelines.

You said I still think it is useful to speculate how other governments would have handled the crisis
That would be speculation.
That isn't the same as parliamentary debate.
Surely no-one is this dim witted?

Well at least you have an appropriate username.
Reminds me of the "shitty Beatles" in Waynes World.

Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 13:11

@DynamoKev I actually think it’s far dimmer to launch into someone with personal insults rather than reasonable counter arguments.

I tried the reasonable counter arguments but you just went more and more hatstand.
I'm off now - I must remember to stop feeding trolls.

Speculating on a Corbyn government that doesn't exist & has never existed, when there's so much else to do is completely futile.

lljkk · 12/10/2020 13:17

Some (elderly) guy was on R5 this morning say how important more controls were to protect vulnerable people like himself. Nicky Campbell asked the guest about his own life: Guest said he was very active outside the home. I wondered if Guest would have baulked at more controls if told he could no longer go to pubs, cafes, table tennis, garden centre, social events etc.

It felt like a classic "Everyone else is taking too many risks endangering people like me. Of course I'm not taking too many risks, no no, not me..." moment.

He was retired so no job worries, seemed to have no family affected by income crash or education deprivation, just table tennis dates he might miss. Anyway, He agreed with govt too.

Reedwarbler · 12/10/2020 13:21

Let's not forget that the government insisted that elderly bed blockers were shipped out to care homes to free up space for potential covid patients in hospital wards. There was no insistence that these people were tested for covid before leaving. We all know what that did.
The guidelines have become increasingly desperate and the goalposts keep moving, that's what I find so exasperating. Initially it was for 12 weeks to help the nhs. It now seems to be to try and eradicate the virus altogether. Seeing the government have always had regularly updated plans for pandemics, I can't understand why they didn't have something already in place for such an eventuality, so they could have instantly produced an already worked out plan. Instead they seem to be like headless chickens, increasingly blaming the public and attempting to fine people into submission. The whole this has been an embarrassing 'knee jerk' shambles from the start.

luckylavender · 12/10/2020 13:29

@lljkk - yes I heard him too. Wanted more restrictions but not his gym closed.

Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 13:30

@lljkk - in my life, my mum is having major surgery for cancer tomorrow. She will be in hospital for 4 days afterwards, and then needs 2 months of care. She’s been self isolating for two weeks prior to her op. She had her preassessment on Friday. I have a primary school age child, but I needed to escort her to her appointment. From my personal circumstances I agree with government guidelines because I want to protect her, and avoid spreading Covid into hospital.

I haven’t been to a pub/restaurant since Xmas, my daughter only does Zoom play dates, I’ve not socialised with anyone other than my immediate family. For months.

PoS

Track and trace isnt working. Theres been data lost, delays meaning people arent contacted til too late, repeated avoidable issues with apps etc because contract given to ministers mates.

ilovesooty · 12/10/2020 13:53

@Plentyofshit

I do, but I do have faith that - whatever decision is made - is with the best interests of the country at heart.
Decisions will be made with the best interests of the Tory party and its donors at heart.
Plentyofshit · 12/10/2020 13:55

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland Ok - from my perspective, me, my family, friends - it’s working. Of course I realise it’s not working for many people and there have been problems. That doesn’t mean that ‘it doesn’t work‘ - full stop. It means it works, but with issues.

It’s helped to protect my nephew at uni, who had to self isolate for 14 days due to someone along his corridor testing positive. We tend to hear the bad media, not the good media when it works.

lljkk · 12/10/2020 13:58

I'm glad that your mom is getting her surgery, OP.

I hope everyone who needs urgent treatment gets it soon.
