to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

‘Yes you can’.

YOU can maybe because you know what you’re looking at Grin

friendlycat · 08/10/2020 15:27

One word ... Tacky

Wakemeupwhenthisisover · 08/10/2020 15:29

I’d never buy a LV bag- they look cheap to me. I have a couple of mulberry’s though, not to show how wealthy I am (mine was in the sale and tell everyone who will listen and my large family all chipped in).

lakesidewinter · 08/10/2020 15:31

I don't actually personally like heavily monogrammed stuff but each to their own.
My MIL passed on some mulberry bags which are very sturdy.

It's a pretty risky investment if so, far better to invest in an equity fund or something -
This however I do disagree with. DH likes a certain type of watch, a specific small sub group. They never lose value, they only ever are the same or more than purchase price long term. A far more stable investment than our stocks and shares.

Laaalaaaa · 08/10/2020 15:34

@PhlegmyHead

Are people actually buying them as "investments"?? It's a pretty risky investment if so, far better to invest in an equity fund or something - something that you can't totally trash by spilling your tea on it.
Not bought with the intention of being an investment but one of my ‘tacky’ LV bags is now worth 4 times the price I paid for it and see it regularly on resale sites for over double what I paid for it. I have zero intention of selling but it’s nice to know I have 2 bags that I could easily get a hefty sum of money for tomorrow.
TheShapeJaper · 08/10/2020 15:35

I bought one for my 30th and ten years on, it still looks as good as it did the day I bought it. They are timeless and functional. Mine has been used heavily and I have no doubt it’ll still be going strong in another ten years from now.

areyoubeingserviced · 08/10/2020 15:37

Agree @lakesidewinter- my dh bought a particular type of watch a few years ago . The watch is now worth more than he paid.

Dillo10 · 08/10/2020 15:37

I think that's a bit unfair.

I've had my "Never Full" LV bag for almost 10 years now and it's the most hard-wearing bag I own, still in great shape and quality.

It's not in the traditional LV monogram but the square shapes if you know what I mean.

It's easy to say they are tacky and a waste of money, but that's just what some people like and that's fine. Everyone's different.

Personally I love fashion and designer brands and have invested in some great handbags over the years.

Whereas my husband would save his money for a stupidly expensive car, that I don't see the point in - I happily drive a 5 year old Audi A1 when I could afford much more.

Each to their own, whatever makes people happy.

Sorry just don't see how people don't get to a point in their lives where they understand everyone is different and stop caring what other people spend their money on

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 08/10/2020 15:40

Errrrrr, I bought my LV Damier Ebene Speedy 30 because I love it and I saved hard for it.

I don’t give a shiny shite what anyone else thinks.

Dillo10 · 08/10/2020 15:41

Plus if you talking about buying fake bags because they look "almost the same" and "nobody can tell" then you just do NOT get it!

And yes you can ALWAYS tell if it's fake if you know what you are looking for.

TheShapeJaper · 08/10/2020 15:43

Mine is the same as yours and if I recall, it was around £365. They are now £1040....

Also, if you’ve got one then you can spot a fake a mile off. Well I can anyway.

Sexnotgender · 08/10/2020 15:48

That particular style doesn’t float my boat but I don’t judge people that buy them because I’m not a dick.
I’m more of a mulberry fan personally and have a reasonable collection, they’re well made (most are old school) and not crazy expensive.

MoreCookiesPlease · 08/10/2020 15:48

I agree, the LV ones are quite ugly. And no, I'm not jealous of people who have chosen to buy one, I just think the actual product is ugly.

Totally. I can spot a fake mulberry a mile away.
formerbabe · 08/10/2020 15:54

I'll be honest, I don't like plain handbags even if they're good quality and expensive. Can't stand the Radley bags for example or even the Mulberry aren't my taste. I like the logos emblazoned all over it Blush

Disa13 · 08/10/2020 15:58

@EdersonsSmileyTattoo I have that one as well, I bought it a while ago, have used it a lot and it still looks new. I love it. If you like something and can afford it, why not?

FudgeBrownie2019 · 08/10/2020 16:02

I have a few LV bags and have always been a bit of a sucker for certain designers. I'm not keen on the overly-logo'd ones like the Neverfull, but one I bought about 14 years ago for travelling with DS1 when he was a baby has been one of the most invincible bags I've ever owned.

I'm also having a Malone Souleirs shoes phase at the moment, though I'll admit nothing I buy is for showing how well-off I am, they're purely because I enjoy fashion.

Perfectly fine to dislike an item without needing to denigrate the owner of the item.

Iwishlifewasrainbows · 08/10/2020 16:04

I am not a fan of LV due to the brand name everywhere and the sheer number of fakes but have to admit I love a bag. Mulberry is my favourite and I have bought 2 in the last few months as well as a Gucci. It’s not about showing off it’s just something I love especially as my ex made me sell the one I had when we meet as he claimed it was a waste of money (I bought it before I knew him), my now DH even bought me the second one last month.

I also drive a black Range Rover Grin

Lily193 · 08/10/2020 16:09

Some of the most expensive designer items I own have no visible external branding on them whatsoever so I'm sure most people would have no idea if they cost £100 or 10k. People should buy whatever makes them happy.

Iwishlifewasrainbows · 08/10/2020 16:12

I also have Primark, river island bags as I liked the design

MotherofPoodles · 08/10/2020 16:15

I really love LV as a brand. I love the quality the workmanship and the customer service. I buy for me.

I have bought hundreds of none designer bags. But since I started buying more expensive bags I buy one maybe two a year if I'm lucky. No more high turnover of cheap bags.

You could never mistake a genuine LV for one they have on market stalls.

PhlegmyHead · 08/10/2020 16:19

I don’t have one but I think use of the word ‘ugly’ to describe something that is not garish or gaudy means you do have some strong feelings about this.

I would say the monogrammed canvas is pretty gaudy.

My use of the term ugly wasn't particularly strong - it's just another word for unattractive.

I think a lot of posters here haven’t seen many LV handbags. There are many which are very discreet and the logo is hardly noticeable. I’m not a fan of the monogram style but it’s classic LV and a lot of people I know have one. I’d never consider them either fake, or the person with them to be showing off. They like designer bags and can afford them... so what? Everyone spends their money on different things and each to their own.

VelvetTrews · 08/10/2020 16:23

Oh and brands like Hermès, Chanel and LV are definitely worth investing in. I read recently that they are better investments than art.

Agree wholeheartedly with the final sentence here.

That’s what makes you sound jealous OP. It reads like you are casting aspersions about the women who own these bags way more than the bags themselves.
