to think you only buy a LV handbag to show off how wealthy you are?

I'm not disputing their quality, as having watched a lot of construction videos they do seem reasonably well-made, but the monogrammed "leather" is just so ugly.

A bog-standard tote will set you back £1200 - handmade bags made by lesser known brands/designers in full-grain, veg tan leather would cost less and be far more attractive. (And higher quality too)

Seeing as we wear things to make a statement about ourselves (for the most part) and considering the bags aren't aesthetically pleasing, the statement, in this case, must be "look how much money I have"?

Lots of jealous individuals who dream of affording such bags in this thread
Why do people always say this? Just because you don't like something a lot of people do, doesn't mean you're jealous. Or is everyone supposed to like the same things??
I could afford a LV bag but would never buy one, the monogrammed ones are ugly and tacky, the plain ones are too expensive. Why would I spend so much money on a bag? There are so many better things to spend 1,000 quid on.

peaceanddove · 09/10/2020 12:36

I've never liked LV because I dislike the heavily monogramed design and any shade of brown. To me, they are the bag-equivalent of a hot-tub in your back garden.

However, I do own a very beautiful Mulberry in quilted, glossy, black buffalo leather, with a lovely, heavy silver chain strap that just slithers sensuously through your fingers Wink It even smells heavenly.

@CounsellorTroi

I’m intrigued at how many people talk about “wearing” bags. For me they are something I use rather than wear.
I believe it's marketing speak. My theory is that at some point fash mags started writing about designer bags in terms of "wearing" rather than "using", to make them seem as essential as your everyday clothes. So people come to see them that way. It's all about selling.

@PhlegmyHead

The luxury fashion houses actually do amazing after care. For example one of my bags got accidentally scratched and they sent a courier to get it from my house to take it to Paris where it was repaired by the person who made it. The hardware was polished and the whole thing was cleaned and came back to me like it was brand new.

How much did you pay for that?

Nothing. It's part of their after care policy. I paid a lot for the bag so I expect this level of after care.

No not al all, jealous of an expensive handbag, that o could afford.... nah! But keep telling yourself that they're really classy and make you look fab (they don't)

I could afford this handbag but I genuinely thinks it looks bloody awful. I also do find it a bit crass to want to ostentatiously show off what you can afford. I think most people who do this are using money to overcome insecurities.

DaphneBlake101 · 09/10/2020 12:42

@Meruem I feel the same - I'll never be too fat to carry one of my handbags!

lovepickledlimes · 09/10/2020 12:43

@CounsellorTroi while yes it is something to use I see it as something that completes the full outfit and can elevate the entire look.

Of course it depends on what I am doing. If I am just going out to buy something from the co-op down the road I probably am not going to make a big deal about the bag but if I go out and am meeting up with others I do want to look nice

seayork2020 · 09/10/2020 12:56

I dont like tripe, am I jealous of that?

LongPauseNoAnswer · 09/10/2020 12:59

There again I also wear a Cartier Santos watch alongside my joggers from Primark. Am I a rich bitch? no, just went out to work a lot for the last 40 years. I'm now 65, please don't assume every designer bag you see is a replica. Thats just ignorant, some of us old boomers carry the real thing y'know

I'm the same. Primark leggings with my LV Frontrow sneakers.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 09/10/2020 13:02

I have a friend who has loads of LV bags and always sends me a photo onboard aeroplanes with her new carry-on bag(s) around her. She is lovely and values them but I just don't get the fascination. I think they are unattractive. Different horses for different courses though.

Laaalaaaa · 09/10/2020 13:04

I absolutely love my Louis Vuitton collection and to me the quality far exceeds any other designer bag I own. As far as this thread goes I am proud to be tacky. In agreement with some previous posters, there are some (not all) responses that do reek of jealousy. It’s almost a competitive who hates them most reverse snobbery even.

ZoeTurtle · 09/10/2020 13:06

I do find it weird that people think they look nice, but as a grown up I understand that tastes are different. Weird OP.

seayork2020 · 09/10/2020 13:06

If I buy something because I want it I dont care if people think it is ugly, fake, ott, cheap, a kick off or anything else.

I buy it for me, so if people buy it is because they want it why does it matter if it is thought of as fake?

That makes it something you are doing to impress people, so own that

VinylDetective · 09/10/2020 13:08

If this thread proves anything it’s that LV is the Marmite of the handbag market!

lovepickledlimes · 09/10/2020 13:11

@VinylDetective totally. Not a big fan and if I did get one it would be from their cherry blossom range in Japan but there are designer bags I would prefer over LV

CoronaBollox · 09/10/2020 13:15

Hmm I'm not sure. Actually I think I'm worse than the "look how wealthy" I am people, because the only reason I avoid LV is because I know lots of people automatically think fake or snide, and sod spending all that money for that.

I realise that makes me ridiculous. I should just buy what I like because I like it. Unfortunately I think LV and the typical design has been faked so many times people have unfair opinions on it.

Fluffybutter · 09/10/2020 13:25

Never have I been on a forum that aims to make people feel so shit about themselves as this one .
So LV is tacky, ugg boots are tacky, grey walls are tacky , ensuites , vans and converse are tacky ....
why do people start these threads ? I do think it’s some kind of complex these types of posters have .
If you don’t like something , don’t buy it but don’t make other people feel bad if they enjoy those things .

BlueJava · 09/10/2020 13:29

I think generally they are used as a status symbol. Perhaps I think they are ugly (sorry to anyone that has one) and the monogrammed leather is dated in my view.

But I am currently using a gorgeous bag I crocheted over lockdown!

Basically once working class people start buying this stuff, everyone on here declares it tacky. Its pure classism

Yep, thats MN for ya. A place where if you don't wash your towel after drying yourself off after a shower, or change your sheets every day, or wear 7 pairs of pyjamas a week, you're a DETTY PIG.

CounsellorTroi · 09/10/2020 13:49

I possess the grand total of one "designer" bag, Rebecca Minkoff which cost peanuts compared with LV and the like. It's a bit too small for day to day use so I tend to keep it for evening use on holiday. Would never pay LV prices would rather spend it on a camera lens but that's just me.

Bouledeneige · 09/10/2020 14:03

Yeah I'm not very keen on the design of LV bags. But I wouldn't judge anyone for owning one.

I never really understood the designer bag thing till a couple of years ago. Now in my 50s (and not a good shape for buying beautiful clothes) I own a couple of more expensive bags which I do really love - DeMellier, Furla and Mulberry. I buy them because I like the design, clean lines and lovely leather and I think on a smart occasion they can make a very nice addition to an outfit. But my everyday handbag is a Mulberry and I'm afraid I don't treat it very well at all - its entirely functional.

But my longest lasting and best bag was a brown Mulberry Clipper overnight bag that I picked up in a sale 20 years ago. It can only have cost £100 or so and it still looks as good as new. They now sell for £650 or more.

I don't mind if this makes me sound shallow. I work hard, I am on my own and everything I have I've paid for. If I was slimmer I'd spend more on beautiful clothes and shoes. As I'm not I buy a few bags - mostly in sales.

jeremypaxo · 09/10/2020 14:05

I don't have one, but I like them. Some LV can be a bit tacky but the one you've posted is a beaut. I think they look great with a polished outfit - can't imagine using one at the moment while I live in a tracksuit!

Nothing wrong with buying designer goods if you can afford them and like them.
