To think that one cannot be both a Catholic and a Feminist?

Inspired by another thread on here, my husband and I had a lively debate about this earlier. I think that a Catholic person cannot also be a Feminist for many reasons, but among these reasons, that an anti-abortion stance is an anti-woman stance.
My husband thinks that a Catholic could be pro-choice and therefore be a feminist, or that a feminist might also disagree with abortion.
He is a cultural Catholic (now atheist), and probably took this stance because he'd like to think that his mum is a feminist. In the end, we agreed to disagree. I think it is a black and white issue and he would like to think there are grey areas.
Do you think there's a way that someone can be a Catholic and also a feminist?

@raddledoldmisanthropist no I am not an atheist either.

And I am not blonde.

Care to comment on all the child rapes in the Catholic church? Of very young children? You haven't commented on that yet.

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:05

Actually would ANY catholic on here care to give an opinion on all the child rapes in the Catholic church.

So far everyone has not commented and brushed it under the carpet. That is shocking!

raddledoldmisanthropist · 04/10/2020 03:05

Priests raping children was common. I have seen many, many lives destroyed in Ireland.

Surely if you are Irish you are more responsible by association than the Catholics on here for the abuses of the Irish church?

I also haven't heard you apologise for the IRA yet.

To not even acknowledge all the problems and think about how the religion could be better (or eradicated) is shocking!

Back to the old eradicating everyone in a group we don't like eh. That escalated quickly.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 04/10/2020 03:07

Surprisingly I'm against child rape, though what it has to do with me, I don't know?

Care to apologise for the IRA?

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/10/2020 03:07

Child rape is a disgusting crime that should be punished in the most severe way says me and all the Catholics I know.

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:08

@raddledoldmisanthropist I am not Irish either! I just lived in Ireland for many years. People tend to move around countries you know.

Interesting, how you continue to deflect, and not comment.

Again, I will ask you directly - what is your opinion on all the child rapes in the Catholic church

raddledoldmisanthropist · 04/10/2020 03:08

Actually would ANY catholic on here care to give an opinion on all the child rapes in the Catholic church.

Are you under the impression I'm Catholic just because I dislike bigotry? I'm not.

bettybeans · 04/10/2020 03:08

I'm not catholic but half my family are, and like most religions, I think Catholicism can only benefit from more feminism and heaps more feminists. If you have the stomach for it, force the change you want to see from inside. If you don't, sit back and watch the collapse of organised religion - because it's well underway. I'm not religious but I'm also not sure that collapse of religion is a good thing, for what it's worth

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:09

@raddledoldmisanthropist no I don't care to apologise for the IRA. What an idiot you are. As I have said, I am not Irish, I just lived in Ireland for many years. Many people move to Ireland you know. When I lived in Ireland, it was full of English people, Scottish people, polish people.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 04/10/2020 03:10

Again, I will ask you directly - what is your opinion on all the child rapes in the Catholic church

I'm still against it as I was a moment ago? What the hell does that have to do with me? Presumably you are against it too?

I am not Irish either! I just lived in Ireland for many years. People tend to move around countries you know.

Did you really not understand my point? I laid it on quite thick.

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:10

@DioneTheDiabolist thanks for answering directly. I don't think that any priests have been charged. I hope they change the Catholic church to improve conditions. It is still full of paedophiles and abuse

araiwa · 04/10/2020 03:13

You can be both

It's quite apparent that both feminism and religion can mean absolutely anything to those involved and no two people have the same principles even if they're both Catholic and feminist

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/10/2020 03:14

Loads of priests have been charged and convicted @Sarahpaula. Given your interest in this field, I'm Shock that you dont know that. TBH, the more you post, the more it sounds as though you've got serious problems with Irish people.

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:14

Why can't the pope be a woman?

And does that annoy any feminists on here who are catholic?

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:16

@DioneTheDiabolist my mother is irish and i lived in Ireland for many years. She suffered badly at the hands of the Catholic church.

So no I don't have problems with Irish people, I have problems with the Catholic church and all the pain that they inflicted.

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/10/2020 03:19

I think you are projecting the problems with your mother onto all Catholics/Irish people.

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:19

@DioneTheDiabolist and no I don't have problems with Irish people. I don't even agree with nationality.

I think it is stupid that anyone thinks that they are from one country. Many of us have parents from different countries, and have dual citizenships , and have moved around.

None of us are just Irish or just English or whatever. That is limited, insular thinking.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 04/10/2020 03:20

I don't think that any priests have been charged

Loads of priests have been charged internationally (though doubtless nowhere near all). The Americans were particularly good on hunting the bastards down.

What an idiot you are. As I have said, I am not Irish

Yes, you said that after the post you were quoting. No need to resort to name calling.

I have problems with the Catholic church and all the pain that they inflicted.

I'm sure lots of people who hate a particular group have strong reasons but it wasn't all Catholics who hurt your mum it was specific people a long time ago.

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:21

@DioneTheDiabolist sigh.

No Dione I am not. That is a very redundant argument. my mother is one example. I would say that I know of at least 30 other people who were abused by the Catholic church in Ireland.

bettybeans · 04/10/2020 03:23

The Catholic church has a history it needs to resolve and acknowledge but name one mainstream church that doesn't.

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/10/2020 03:23

And yet you didn't notice any priests being charged and found guilty of child abuse. Go figure.🤷‍♀️

raddledoldmisanthropist · 04/10/2020 03:24

I would say that I know of at least 30 other people who were abused by the Catholic church in Ireland.

I know people who died in the Manchester bombings. I don't hate Muslims or blame Islam.

Shxx · 04/10/2020 03:28

There are gay Catholics, Christians and Muslims.
Of course there can be feminist Catholics.

Religion is a guide

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:34

@DioneTheDiabolist no there were no priests charged near me in the republic of Ireland. Can you actually find me a list of how many priests were charged in the republic of Ireland, total?

Seeing as you seem very sure that lots of priests were charged for child rape.

Sarahpaula · 04/10/2020 03:35

@raddledoldmisanthropist I don't HATE Muslims.

But I do think that Islam is a terrible religion, and is hurting many people, the same as Catholicism is.
