That seems a lot

So I’m wondering if it’s true

In a very unscientific poll

YABU = not xmas shopping yet
YANBU = yes I’m shopping for Christmas

I always start in September. X

Andsomywatchbegins · 03/10/2020 07:52

I make a start on stocking fillers and family presents in September.
I've put the meat order in with the butcher.
I like it 90% done and wrapped by the middle of Nov, so I can deliver presents when I visit people, no rushing.

rosydreams · 03/10/2020 07:54

i am doing little bits but really i have no idea what to get anyone apart from my 18 month old which is easy to shop for lol

DappledThings · 03/10/2020 07:57

God no, far too depressing. I refuse to consider anything Christmas related till Advent.

SIL texted yesterday and asked for ideas for DD. She did apologise for asking so early.

AuntieMarys · 03/10/2020 07:57

I only buy gifts for 3 adults...dh and dcs. Dh sorts out his own adult dcs/grandchildren.
My dcs get money and about another £100-150 spent on gifts, which I've started to get, mainly online. I use Redbubble a lot and other independent sellers. So far I've bought about 6 items but have a list. We are going to a lovely place tomorrow where I know I can get a few bits.
Dh's main gift is an antique tractor stool for the garden, which my brother is keeping for me.

CoalCraft · 03/10/2020 07:58

I haven't even begun to think about it. I usually do it in one go in early Dec.

BigPlanes · 03/10/2020 08:00

YABU- I’ve bought 5 things for my child but they are still at an easy age so I’ve been buying bits on sale/market place as I’ve seen them to keep costs down. Smallest thing a £1 book (to get free delivery for something else tbh) and biggest thing about £40 for the “big” Christmas gift.

Started writing an ideas list for adults. We are being careful this year as I’m worried about job security.

Sheknowsaboutme · 03/10/2020 08:00

If you can afford to do it all in one month, well that's great.

Many cant, so spread it out. Cant see what's unreasonable about that.

Squirrelblanket · 03/10/2020 08:02

I've almost done mine. I leave my husband until last because he always says he can't think of anything he wants, then I'll choose stuff for him only for him to decide on something at the last minute!

I like to have it finished by end of November so that I can enjoy a chilled out December. I leave one gift to buy in December- something for me!

Jimdandy · 03/10/2020 08:02

After my Children’s birthdays in September I start picking bits up. I don’t specifically Christmas shop but if I see something I get it.

burglarbettybaby · 03/10/2020 08:02

I've the kids done. I don't have many more to get. Dh my parents and nieces/nephews. Couple of small gifts for neighbours that i will pick up grocery shopping.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 03/10/2020 08:04

I always start in Spetember. Mainly due to having one family birthday the week before, followed by Christmas, then one birthday the week after. It gets expensive.

CounsellorTroi · 03/10/2020 08:08

I’m almost done. The best tip anyone ever gave me was to start buying what you can in the January sales including wrapping paper etc dirt cheap.

I’ve always felt like this is tempting fate!

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 03/10/2020 08:12

Always start christmas shopping in September i like to be done by Dec. Im almost finished this year just got stocking presents to get.

KizzyWayfarer · 03/10/2020 08:15

No way. Two family birthdays in October here.
I hate Christmas present shopping as it’s so so hard to think of things people will actually like/use. There’s not much I even want for me that I wouldn’t want to choose myself. Even my kids are difficult to buy for! Maybe I’ll try and be organised and start early November this year.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/10/2020 08:21

Yep pretty much done apart from DDS main gift.

NotQuiteUsual · 03/10/2020 08:22

I'm more window shopping. Planning what I'm buying and keeping an eye on offers. Got a hotwheels set ds wanted for £15 off the other day. Was thrilled with that, I can't wait to play with it.

FuzzyPenguin · 03/10/2020 08:28

I start saving at the start of the year and then normally start shopping from the summer when the toys sales are on.
I am pretty much done, slightly ahead of schedule but I don’t drive and wanted to make sure things arrive in time as I bet there will be more online shopping this year. I am lucky my DS doesn’t change his mind once he has picked. Last year he decided in May!

BiddyPop · 03/10/2020 08:29

The question that would be more interesting is how many people are doing it earlier this year than normal, or how many are doing exactly what they normally do?

I suspect that there are normally about 1/3 of people who have at least started by now. For budget reasons, to spread cost. When they have time available that they don't have later. Because they have a lot to buy for, or tricky people needing hard to find items. Or they just happen to see something perfect somewhere for a particular person rather than deliberately starting. Dcs looking for specific toys that may sell out. Buying in sales or seeing promotions to reduce the cost of what they were going to get anyway. Etc etc

So even before you add in concerns about brexit or Covid, that may find more people starting to buy for what is a big event and less than 3 months away, there would already be plenty out quietly putting away bits and pieces. Yeah, there might be. A few completely finished they're so organized- but most are just putting a few things in their bags as they do other things to add to the stash and spread the burden.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 03/10/2020 08:29

I start in the New Year's sales. I've got five stockings to sort out...

marmite79 · 03/10/2020 08:31

YANBU. I like to be organised every year but this year I feel I should be even more organised. I may sound mad but deliveries were taking a long time back during proper lockdown. Imagine everyone Christmas shopping online and the increased demand.

Also, I love to browse and buy gifts in store. I can't deal with it being busy during an average Christmas but the thought of Christmas shopping on the high street at the minute makes me anxious so I've been looking around some shops now whilst it's still quietish!

Rainbowqueeen · 03/10/2020 08:32

Always start early because I have to send stuff overseas
Also sorted my niece and nephew as I saw something I thought they would like and their mum said they didn’t have.
Won’t be anything else much until next month probably

Lsquiggles · 03/10/2020 08:35

I usually start mine end of October but I've been shopping for Christmas since the start of September this year. I think its because there's nothing better to do (in terms of no other big events coming up) and we all need something to look forward to as we've all missed so much this year.

Plus if we end up in full lockdown again how will we get presents? Online shopping will be chaos due to demand!

Badgerling · 03/10/2020 08:37

I think more people will be this year. A combo of boredom shopping, and trying to spread the cost a bit more

onemouseplace · 03/10/2020 08:38

I never start mine before November - 2 months is plenty of time. Plus, we have the majority of family birthdays in October and I can’t face starting before those are over.

I get really annoyed when DH’s family always want all birthday and Christmas ideas before the end of September - I don’t bloody know then!
