To ask if giving a false phone number is a thing?

DuckyMcDuck · 01/10/2020 18:31

Went to a cafe with a friend, we sat outside but she was asked for her phone number. Once we sat down, she admitted that she always gives a false number and so does everyone she knows.

Is this really a common thing? I haven't been in places very much but have always given my number when asked.

I can understand that having "fallen through the cracks" that a 14 days isolation could spell disaster for you/your business, and if it were something essential we were talking about here like shopping, visiting hospital etc I'd fully understand your resistance to opening yourself up to doing that without support.
However we are talking about leisure time, a visit to a pub, restaurant or cafe. As they are not the only places you can socialise for your mental health or otherwise, why insist on still going if doing so and cooperating with the measures in place would cost you so dearly? It's not something you HAVE to do, it's something you want to do, and that's why I think so many people are annoyed that people are giving false details when going to one of these places. People are arguing over leaving real details Vs leaving fake ones when the other option is to not put yourself in the position of having to do either by just not going. But no one wants to talk about that option because it's so deeply rooted in society that we have a God given right to do these things it's inconceivable that someone weigh up the situation and choose not to go. You seem to feel you have the right to go anyway, and circumnavigate the possible concequences of your choice by leaving false details, rather than taking responsibility for protecting your own income and not going in the first place. That's what I find selfish, because you want to do something, you don't need to, it's not essential, but you've put that want and 'right' above any responsibility you have as a member of society.
And that is rife, was before Covid, is even more so during Covid.
The reason things have been moved from guidelines to mandatory is because people just said "It's only guidelines" and refused now they're laws and so people are now effectively saying "Catch me if you can" while breaking them and putting other people at risk in the process. Other people are always acceptable collateral damage, but when you yourself are on the recieving end of the collateral damage (as in no help available for you) suddenly that's unacceptable.[/quote]
I agree with this 100%

Julz1622 · 02/10/2020 18:44

Why give a false number? I really don't understand it. So you don't wanna know if you've been near someone who tested positive? I've seen a few folk online laughing about giving false names and numbers. Weird.

Ginfordinner · 02/10/2020 18:47

Because they think they are above the law @Julz1622.

I reiterate, it is only a matter of time before venues start asking for proof of ID, becasue the covidiots are spoilin g it for the rest of us.

Ginfordinner · 02/10/2020 18:57

Apologies for my typos. I have had a glass or two of wine Grin

bossyrossy · 02/10/2020 18:59

Proof of ID should be requested to stop the idiots who think it is ok to give false details and potentially spreading the virus.

FelicisNox · 02/10/2020 19:04

So let me get this right: the British public are going out, mixing with others during a pandemic and when asked for a number for track and trace they're all lying about it?

Riiiiiight.

So if you come into contact with someone who has Covid you can't be contacted to be informed of this danger and you're all quite happy to take it back to your family, friends and colleagues with no thought for your or their safety.

Lovely.

Do me a favour: don't post another boring repetitive thread moaning about Covid and how it's ruining your life/year.

NOT ONE.

mussymummy · 02/10/2020 19:08

FFS the selfishness of some arseholes knows no bounds. You are the very reason we are heading into another full lock down. Different if it was ur elderly gran coming down with covid, then you would be the first to the media about how hard done by you are. Perhaps once in your selfish little live think of others

MushMonster · 02/10/2020 19:29

The conspiracy theory about Bill Gates wanting to microchip us all (I read it on another thread, some conspiracies are quite a thing!Grin) may be true after all.
Apparently we do need microchips to get our details straightSad

tornadoalley · 02/10/2020 19:31

Never been asked but I do the covid 19 scan thing

Joodleoodle · 02/10/2020 19:42

Its idiots who give false phone numbers that are allowing this virus to take so many lives. Just give your real number, isolate if they call you and save someone's life. Excuses like "its none of their business" "I cannot afford 2 weeks off work" cost people their lives literally.

@Potterpotterpotter How would you feel if you went to a coffee shop and sat near someone who should have been isolating but they had given a false number so were not contactable when track and trace tried to call. They gave you the virus. You now have to have 6 months off work because you are ill (I work with someone who caught covid 19 in March and still isn't back at work!). Had that person given their correct number, they would have been isolating and not sat near you, therefore you would not be ill.

Bushgirl · 02/10/2020 20:11

PotterPotterPotter stupid ignorant selfish shits like you are the main reason we are in the situation we are in. Does it really not bother you that you could be directly or indirectly responsible for actually causing death. Evil scumbag beyond belief. I hope karma comes back and bites your stink arse

Yes of course, I am the sole reason we are in the middle of a pandemic right now. I caused this situation, it was all me 🙄

If the person should of been isolating then why are they in the pub? I haven’t once said if I have symptoms then I would still go to the pub Confused
ClarencesMum · 02/10/2020 20:39

Fuck me sideways

Some people are in desperate need of some perspective!

THEDEACON · 02/10/2020 20:55

Oh my what a lot of stupid selfish eejits live among us

PomBearsArentNaice · 02/10/2020 20:56

But why wouldnt.you.leave your number?? It isn't that hard to.do and must means they can text.you if there has been a risk of infection?

PomBearsArentNaice · 02/10/2020 20:59

@JinglingHellsBells

I really don't get all this drama about giving out a phone no and then having it used in some way as a prank etc. God, all you do is block it from that moment.

I get zillions of calls from ambulance chasers, people selling me stuff(trying to) and all kinds of crap. You just delete and block.

Exactly. I do.wonder if @Potterpotterpotter is just being goady
CokeEnStock · 02/10/2020 21:07

Back in the day, there used to be a book with your name, address and phone number which they sent to ALL the houses. How did we survive!!!

JassyRadlett · 02/10/2020 21:16

@Tombero Much more likely to be trying to minimise no-shows - a lot of restaurants have been talking about the high numbers who book and then don’t show. When you’ve only got a single sitting and are turning people away because of reservations, the selfish cunts who don’t show up but don’t cancel the booking are the last straw for a lot of places.

SmellsLikeFeet · 02/10/2020 21:17

I asked earlier @Potterpotterpotter do you work with vulnerable people as you get tested weekly? why haven't you replied?
Is that your safety net/your insurance?

Luckily somebody quoted you
Genuinely interested

LittleMsM · 02/10/2020 21:19

It never occured to me to do this, and to be honest I've had a ton of unsolicited calls from 'we heard you were in an accident that wasn't your fault' etc, since. It can only really be related to that. But I wouldn't give a fake number but say maybe a standard alter ego 'name' with the correct number - Like Regina Phalange, so if it's not through someone I know, they would use that name and then you'd know but anyone overlooking would have half info.....

thecatsatonthewall · 02/10/2020 21:27

@Potterpotterpotter Has a point, the paper records aren't used by nhs track and trace.

Who do you think they would ring?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 02/10/2020 21:32

Yes they are! A local youth football team... young lad tested positive ... secretary of the club was contacted and asked for the track and trace records for the training session the lad attended two days before his symptoms started. These were all in paper form and details were handed over.

Cornwallwanabee · 02/10/2020 22:08

Let’s hope you don’t need treatment at hospital and get told by the doctors “oh it’s not my business to treat you so you best go home” some people are selfish beyond belief and it’s people like them who are not helping the situation. As for the person who said they don’t have vulnerable friends and family think yourself lucky some people have lost their family members to this terrible virus thanks to no help from the selfish people around.
