AIBU to think that most people who have a dishwasher run it once a day?

We bought a new dishwasher recently. It was heavily promoted as coming with six months' supply of Fairy dishwasher tablets. The tablets arrived yesterday and there are 120 of them. That's not six months' supply in this household, as we run the dishwasher every day. AIBU to think that wouldn't be half a year's worth in most other households?

I rang the manufacturer to query it and was told that it was six months' worth based on "data and surveys". Hmmmm. I'm not going to take this to the highest court in the land, obviously, but it does seem a bit crap. AIBU?

About twice a week for us , I think once a day is terribly wasteful and a man must be stacking

Pascha · 01/10/2020 10:56

On Tuesday I made a cake and fish pie and fed 5 for dinner. The dishwasher went on twice during the day once after dinner and I still handwashed the good pans.

That's more than usual of course but for a family of four using breakfast crockery, dinner plates, side plates, 2 meals worth of cutlery, the stainless steel pans, various implements, glasses and cups is an easy full load on a normal day for us.

SunbathingDragon · 01/10/2020 10:57

We have a full sized one and it’s always on at least once a day, sometimes three times.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 01/10/2020 10:58

Two adults and a baby here and it's on probably every three days. I cook mostly from scratch but don't put pots in there.

I run it when it's full, it seems enormously wasteful to do it every night by default.

AltoCation · 01/10/2020 10:58

So you wanted another 60 tabs, roughly?

I wouldn’t have bothered making the phone call, they will quote data, and did you really choose this purchase based on free tabs?

Thecobwebsarewinning · 01/10/2020 10:58

I thought the same thing a few years ago when we got a years supply free with our Miele. It only lasted a few months and that was pre lockdown. Like you say it’s a minor thing but it’s irritating.

Coldilox · 01/10/2020 10:58

I run mine most days but not every day. Maybe 5 times a week

AltoCation · 01/10/2020 10:58

We run ours about 5 tiles a week.

How full is your dishwasher after one day?is it not more wasteful to use a sink full of hot water after each meal or preparation than to just fill the washer and wash once at the end of the day?

Depends on number of people on your house and how much mess you make when cooking, though? Ours is stuffed when it goes on. It’s more efficient then using basins of water, so most things go in it. Pans etc. I can’t see how you can go for days without putting it on.
AlwaysLatte · 01/10/2020 10:59

Ours is a big one and we still run it 2-3 times a day, more for dinner parties etc. But then we have a cooked lunch as well as cooked dinner, so saucepans and frying pans twice a day.

justanotherneighinparadise · 01/10/2020 10:59

Once s day here. Sometimes twice

OneFiveFour · 01/10/2020 10:59

Once, twice, sometime three times a day here.

3 adults, 2 home all day and almost everything is cooked from scratch so lots of bowls, tins etc.

We also put dog bowls in there Grin

LividLaughLovely · 01/10/2020 11:00

Once or twice a day.

2 adults and a baby (wfh and mat leave).

I ran it daily when it was just me here 🤷‍♀️.Who wants stinky pots in the kitchen, or to be hand washing pans when you have a dishwasher?

TheSockMonster · 01/10/2020 11:00

Do you hand wash your pans and oven dishes @mrsbyers? And do you have days where you don’t use the dishwasher at all, or do you collect plates etc over a number of days? And if you collect plates over a number of days, surely you have to rinse them pretty thoroughly to the point of pre-washing them anyway, so haven’t actually saved any water?

Sorry - genuine questions I promise!

It’s still annoying though.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/10/2020 11:01

Every second day for 2.
When it was 4, every day.

How many dishes do people use to run it more than once a day, unless there is 6 peopleShock

CoalCraft · 01/10/2020 11:01

We only use ours when we've used a lot of stuff, i.e. if we've had guests. When it's just us at home we do the washing up by hand.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 01/10/2020 11:01

Twice a week here, there are 3 of us, but I do not put pans or ovenware in the dishwasher.

How? Just how? There are three of us here - DD has lunch at school, but DP and I are mostly at home during the day - and we wash most pots and pans by hand, but it still fills up, especially the mug section.

TokyoSushi · 01/10/2020 11:02

At least once, I'd say probably about 10 times a week here.

SmellsLikeAHamsterCage · 01/10/2020 11:02

Once a day! But you are on mumsnet so are more likely to get that response. If you asked a person that lives by themselves or just 2 adults in a house who are at work all day then the answer could easily be once or twice a week.

RoyalChocolat · 01/10/2020 11:03

At least twice a day, often 3 or 4 at weekends if I am baking or batch cooking. My record is 7 on Christmas day.

ToastyCrumpet · 01/10/2020 11:03

If I’m running a dishwasher it’s just for me, and it’s every other day. So maybe they’re basing it on average usage for one person.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 01/10/2020 11:03

We run ours about 4 or 5 times a week but do quite a lot of washing up by hand. Wine glasses, saucepans and baking trays, oven dishes, wooden utensils or anything with a wooden handle all get done by hand here.

120 tablets for 6 months is on the cheeky side I would say.

SENandSENsibility · 01/10/2020 11:03

@AltoCation The tablets came in two bags of 60. I thought they might have forgotten a third bag, which would have brought it up to 180.
