AIBU to think that most people who have a dishwasher run it once a day?

We bought a new dishwasher recently. It was heavily promoted as coming with six months' supply of Fairy dishwasher tablets. The tablets arrived yesterday and there are 120 of them. That's not six months' supply in this household, as we run the dishwasher every day. AIBU to think that wouldn't be half a year's worth in most other households?

I rang the manufacturer to query it and was told that it was six months' worth based on "data and surveys". Hmmmm. I'm not going to take this to the highest court in the land, obviously, but it does seem a bit crap. AIBU?

I have a dishwasher and I never use it! It came with the house already built in. There are only 2 of us at home and it's cheaper just to hand wash everything.

AlwaysLatte · 01/10/2020 20:50

Er, twice a week?
You sound unsure.
Our dishwasher on the eco mode uses less water than washing a full load by hand in the sink.

I am just going to say it: There's no wonder this planet is going to hell in a handcart with people running a dishwasher three times a day, washing their towels after each use, tumble-drying washing when it is 30 degrees outside and changing their sheets when the sun has shone through the window....

Figgyboa · 01/10/2020 20:57

Every other day. I usually do half/half dishwasher and hand washing

LST · 01/10/2020 20:59

@butteredtoast you are a woman after my own heart. Totally agree with you!

SantaClaritaDiet · 01/10/2020 20:59

I can see why you would use towels more than once (I do!), but plats pots and pans? It's more economical to use a dishwasher, so there you go.

Quarterback11 · 01/10/2020 21:06

I'd say we run the dishwasher once a day on average. Occasionally skip a day but some days it goes on twice or even three times.

But I do remember, back in the day (pre kids), dh and I both working out of the house full-time, the dishwasher being run once or twice a week. So some other people are bringing down the average.

Lurkingforawhile · 01/10/2020 21:07

Two person household - usually every other day but sometimes every third. Mum is by herself and she runs it about the same.

Lurkingforawhile · 01/10/2020 21:09

Evidence shows that if you have a full dishwasher and run it on the eco setting it's much more efficient than hand washing. Ours uses 6litres water on a wash.

RevolutionRadio · 01/10/2020 21:09

Ours is usually every 2 or 3 days.

Indoctro · 01/10/2020 21:10

Once or twice a day here

FlyingPandas · 01/10/2020 21:24

I am weird about the dishwasher as I can’t bear the idea of leaving dirty dishes festering rancidly inside it. I also could never leave dirty dishes festering and rancid on the worktop waiting to go into said dishwasher and have to wash up, dry up and put away within half an hour of finishing a meal, otherwise I just feel dirty.

So in this house the dishwasher is only ever used if we have enough dishes to fill it and put it on straight away, ie if we’ve done a roast dinner for all five of us plus (in non covid times) guests, so maybe used once a week? Twice absolute maximum? Other than that we hand wash everything. Nothing to do with environmental concerns or water usage or anything like that, just can’t bear the ick of leaving manky dishes to fester and I quite like washing/drying up by hand. For occasional use a dishwasher is handy but it’s by no means an every day necessity.

120 tablets would last us a couple of years Grin

I realise we’re a bit odd, though.

Hoglet70 · 01/10/2020 21:24

Mine is a slimline one so it's been known to go on twice a day but always once without fail. It would stink if you left it just sat there with dirty stuff in it.

Tatum1234 · 01/10/2020 21:25

2-3 times a day here

LadyofMisrule · 01/10/2020 21:27

6 of us in our house. We use it at least twice a day.

Aposterhasnoname · 01/10/2020 21:38

2-3 times a day here too. And there’s only two of us. Wouldn’t dream of hand washing pans though.

floridapalmtree · 01/10/2020 21:40

3 times a day at the moment with 4 in the house.

4 times a day with 5 or 6 in the house.

5 times a day during lockdown with 8 in the house.

PercyKirke · 01/10/2020 21:43

Twice a day minimum. Three if we have guests (unlikely now, I admit) or a meal with lots of items needed to make it.

LG101 · 01/10/2020 21:53

Family of 5 and we only run it every 1.5-2 days normally

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 01/10/2020 21:59

Ours gets run twice a day, we are a family of 10 though

theliverpoolone · 01/10/2020 22:05

Your electric bills must be huge! There's only me and dd, so I only run mine every 3rd day or so, but I do really try to limit it to keep the bills down.
