AIBU to think that most people who have a dishwasher run it once a day?

We bought a new dishwasher recently. It was heavily promoted as coming with six months' supply of Fairy dishwasher tablets. The tablets arrived yesterday and there are 120 of them. That's not six months' supply in this household, as we run the dishwasher every day. AIBU to think that wouldn't be half a year's worth in most other households?

I rang the manufacturer to query it and was told that it was six months' worth based on "data and surveys". Hmmmm. I'm not going to take this to the highest court in the land, obviously, but it does seem a bit crap. AIBU?

Probably 4 or 5 times a week here, but only two of us and I hand wash pans. I have two dishdrawers which I love.

Iliketeaagain · 01/10/2020 10:43

I think people who run it every other day must have masses of cutlery and plates - we'd run of spoons and plates if we only put it on alternate days.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 01/10/2020 10:43

I put ours on every couple of days.

Calic0 · 01/10/2020 10:44

Household of 2 and yep, dishwasher is on once a day. We cook from scratch a lot and it is usually pretty full.

Yarboosucks · 01/10/2020 10:44

I am amazed! Twice a week here, there are 3 of us, but I do not put pans or ovenware in the dishwasher.

CounsellorTroi · 01/10/2020 10:44

We had a dishwasher put in when we had the kitchen redone four or five years back but tbh we only ever use it when we entertain or at Christmas. There’s only two of us and DH enjoys washing up while listening to The World Tonight on R4.

AriettyHomily · 01/10/2020 10:44

Mine is slimline and it is on twice and sometimes 3 times a day. I wash everything in it though, even he non dishwasher stuff.

BrieAndChilli · 01/10/2020 10:44

i think maybe of you are single or a couple with a full size dishwasher and both work out of the house, go out for meals a couple of times then yes you probably would only put your dishwasher on every couple of days!!
If like us you are a family of 5 with pets so have breakfast dishes, pet bowls, lunchbox pots, water bottles, dinner dishes, various cups/glasses as people are incabable of reusing one!! then its once a day, during lockdown it was probably twice a day sometimes as had more involved breakfasts eg egg or pancakes as opposed to cereal/toast and the also lunch dishes plus did a little more cooking eg cakes/bread etc.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/10/2020 10:45

Once a day, and I wash pans and water bottles and some glasses by hand. There are four of us.

BlueJava · 01/10/2020 10:45

Once a day here. Ask to see their data sources.

As you say it's not the end of the world, but "6 month's supply" sounds so much better than 3 months, so they should back it up.

EvilRingahBitch · 01/10/2020 10:46

That’s annoying isn’t it, so YANBU, but I suspect that they’re arithmetically correct.
If, say, 75% are normal households who run it every day except when they’re away for the weekend and 25% of people are smaller households who run it every other day then the mean average is
18075% + 9025% = c.157 but they’re still cheap skates not to give you the median quantity of 180.

Doveyouknow · 01/10/2020 10:47

We run ours every other day or sometimes every third day. Our pans don't go in the dishwasher though.....

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 01/10/2020 10:47

I guess it depends on your family size. With 2 kids we run it daily but was every other day when were just a couple.

Laaalaaaa · 01/10/2020 10:47

That would have lasted almost 2.5 years for me. We had a dishwasher and from it being installed to us selling that house one year later we used 1 box of 50 tablets. Needless to say we didn’t pay the 2k our house builder was charging for a dishwasher.

Titsywoo · 01/10/2020 10:48

We have two and run them both every day! We are two adults working from home and two teens who eat a lot though... Blush

EvilRingahBitch · 01/10/2020 10:48

Oh I misread - I thought it was 150 they’d given you and it’s 120. My point still stands that they may be arithmetically correct but they’re still cheapskates and you’re still NBU to be pissed off.

MissDollyMix · 01/10/2020 10:48

If you only put it on every 2-3 days doesn’t it absolutely stink? Ours goes on at least once a day. It was twice a day during lockdown with everyone at home. Tesco own brand tablets are my tablet of choice.

TheSockMonster · 01/10/2020 10:50

Full sized dishwasher here. The children load it after dinner every evening and I unload it every morning. On weekends and other days when we are all home we tend to generate a second load (cooked breakfast or lunch, baking, etc). This is probably averaged out by the odd day that it doesn’t get used due to eating out etc.

I did google average dishwasher use and found this graph which is surprising. Maybe other people just eat out a lot more?

AIBU to think that most people who have a dishwasher run it once a day?
Dahlietta · 01/10/2020 10:50

As long as they're not the lemon ones. They made everything in ours taste of weird synthetic lemon...

Runnerduck34 · 01/10/2020 10:50

At least once a day here.
but I would have taken any promotional claims with a pinch of salt, they will use low estimates and small households when calculating 6 months supply of dishwasher tablets

pooopypants · 01/10/2020 10:50

Once or twice a day, 2.adults and 2 DC. Ours is slimline though

Cat bowls - in the dishwasher? Envy

TheSockMonster · 01/10/2020 10:52

On the very odd occasion ours does not go on we run a rinse cycle. It’s usually just a few mugs and breakfast plates though. I wouldn’t leave dinner pans etc!

beautifulmonument · 01/10/2020 10:53

Yes we only usually fill it about 3/4 but we do run it every day

DappledThings · 01/10/2020 10:54

1-2 times a day here. But then my parents run theirs only about once a week. So it might well average out!

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 01/10/2020 10:55

If it's just me and the kids, then probably twice every 3 days.

When DP's here, I have no idea what's going on, but it can be on twice a day (full!), so can the washing machine, and the bin emptied - and I don't see where the extra is even coming from really!
