Jumping in!

Just reposting my last comment from the other thread just in case it gets missed while everyone jumps over here:

I don’t think Kennedy was that great. He has been idolised because of the assassination but if you look at a lot of stuff he did I think had he lived he’d be considered pretty average.

His personal life was a car crash - the affairs, the drugs, etc - but his politics were t great either. He was disinterested in the Civil Rights movement, until it became obvious it wasn’t going to go away, and his handling of Cuba and the Missile Crisis has been misrepresented - Lucy Worsley did a BBC Four programme about “American History’s Greatest Fibs” and she covers the Cuban Missile Crisis in it.

Oh and of course, thanks for the new thread Roussette!

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 30/09/2020 10:42

Thanks #Roussette! Don't worry about the title, think we're all a bit fecked!

Roussette · 30/09/2020 10:44

CaveMum I think you're right. He was idolised though....

Just watched a BBC interview with a pro Trump journalist/commentator over in US.
Now that's when I wanted to throw something at the telly.
Trump being a businessman has made American great again because he has no political views and can drain the swamp. She doesn't believe the NYT article about $750 tax because he said different last night, the said he pays millions, and he never lies.

I do feel the Beeb is a tad biaised this morning regarding the Debate. Only slightly, but to me it's there. They just keep re-running the clip in isolation of Biden telling Trump to shut up. Nothing about the rudeness of Trump.
But do run the Proud Boys to stand by clip

Thank you for the new thread Rousette🌞 I haven't seen much coverage yet but from what I can gather....well that thing about 'don't wrestle with a pig'.....🤦🏼‍♀️

Heffalooomia
that thing about 'don't wrestle with a pig'

Beat me to it: I've been thinking that all morning.

As far as I could tell from their coverage the BBC World Service essentially felt that nobody won, but Trump lost.

Heffalooomia · 30/09/2020 12:20

There is talk that (because it was so ugly) further debates may be cancelled.... was that trumps intention all along🤔

JamieLeeCurtains · 30/09/2020 12:27

I certainly think it's fair to say that Trump didn't win.

I have never seen anything quite like it. But I'm glad I watched it all, because I knew the BBC editing would be biased and/or a bit crap.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 30/09/2020 12:32

Thanks Roussette! After 4 years' of threads I think we're all a bit "fecked". I just wish Trump and his filthy family were well and truly fecked as well!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/09/2020 12:36

They'd only enjoy it -- especially Trump.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/09/2020 12:42

More seriously: if he refuses to leave the White House on 20th January, he is not still President, is he? And Pence is no longer Vice-President. That is the case unless they win fairly thoroughly: his term of office ends on that day and unless he is re-inaugurated, he is no longer President, no matter what law-suits he may be trying to pursue.

Who is then in charge? Nancy Pelosi? She doesn't move into the White House, I assume, but does she take over running the country until the mess is sorted out?

Oh, and is a vote for Trump also a vote for Pence, or is it possible to end up with the President from one party and the Vice President from the other?

My knowledge of US politics is all drawn from multiple watching of The West Wing, but yes in theory you can nominate anyone you like to be VP (or any other of the Secretaries) but I’d imagine they’d need the approval of the winning Party, who are unlikely to willingly give a powerful seat to someone from the other side.

Bringing Brew and Cake for new thread. Because I'm still fuddled and I didn't even watch last night.

The British press (what I have seen so far) has been fair on this debate. IMO. (Yank born in the UK.)

I think the coverage is better than what I have seen in the US which seems really polarised indeed.

You're correct. As of 12:01 on the 20th of Jan he won't be president. Unless he wins (spins around 3 times, spits, and makes the sign of the cross). If someone else isn't sworn in, power passes to the Speaker 9f the House - currently Pelosi. I don't think you can vote for one party as president and another as vice. On all the times I've voted, they are listed together with one oval to mark.
TheNorthWestPawsage · 30/09/2020 13:59

This is the absentee ballot that DH and DC's received. You have to vote for the pair - Pres and VP. There is space to write in an alternative pair as indicated but I don't think that Trump and Harris for e.g. would be acceptable?! But who knows in this alternate reality we're living in? Smile

Moving and shaking to the new thread.

Thanks Roussette.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/09/2020 14:25

I always forget to say "Thanks for the new thread" until page two or three is happening and it seems a bit bluddy late so I haver about and then don't, but I am grateful every time, and this time I am remembering to say so.

Thanks, Roussette!

PhilSwagielka · 30/09/2020 14:31

After Trump's 'stand by' message to the Proud Boys - who are actual white supremacists - I am legit scared of what'll happen if he gets in. Whether he wins or loses, the far right will riot.

Lweji · 30/09/2020 14:36

How I feel

Presidential Debate season, let's stand strong together! (Trump thread #105)
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/09/2020 14:36

We can hope two things:

One, that there are not in fact that many of them, and fewer than post to any of their sinkholes will actually turn out to defy the rule of law, and

Two, that their defying the rule of law will get short shrift from officers appointed to uphold that Law.

Members of a country's police force actively supporting insurgents against that country is still fairly rare in countries which are not actually dictatorships.

Roussette · 30/09/2020 14:38
