What do we reckon?

OP posts:

It goes against what the party used to stand for. But not the current party - just look at the infringements to civil liberties which have come about under Covid without Parliamentary scrutiny,

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 01/10/2020 08:58

The Tories have long had a hang 'em and flog 'em wing, and they know the section of the electorate agreeing with that sort of policy is more likely to vote for them. That authoritarian streak isn't a new thing at all. It was certainly present in the Thatcher era.

Peregrina · 01/10/2020 09:09

Yes, I agree, but they used to keep it in check. Now that and enriching their cronies is all they stand for. How many other PMs would have said 'fuck business'?

Indeed. Her attempts to silence Sinn Fein in the media, her support for and admiration of a murderous dictator, clause 28, trying to destroy the Greenham and other protests, changes to the law requiring protesters to get permission from the police. Thatchers love of freedom and democracy only ever extended to people who agreed with her.
thereisonlyoneofme · 01/10/2020 10:56

After hearing he only gets £150000 for running the country, when people get millions for kicking a ball about, I wouldnt blame him

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/10/2020 10:58

@thereisonlyoneofme I dunno. Where else would he find anyone stupid enough to pay him that sort of salary for doing a job so badly?

The people who run the country make the rules which allow for these mismatches between merit and renumeration
BoreOfWhabylon · 01/10/2020 11:20

The Mail has been gunning for Boris for some time now. He's toast.

He doesn't need the salary.

Disconnect · 01/10/2020 11:30

Interesting the EU are now taking legal proceedings against the UK.
Fab.

Miljea · 01/10/2020 11:36

@adawong

FFS give it a fucking rest.
Ahahahaha!

If only we could 'give it a rest'.

There is nothing I'd like more than to be able to 'give it a rest'.

It just goes to show you can't educate 'stupid'.

And Murdoch. The Times story about money was evidence of that.
BoreOfWhabylon · 01/10/2020 12:00

Yup.

VinylDetective · 01/10/2020 12:03

And The Telegraph, when that kicks a Tory PM, you know their days are numbered.

ListeningQuietly · 01/10/2020 13:45

But he has a huge majority and it's years till the next election

Tory Brexit will be owned by the Tories

VinylDetective · 01/10/2020 15:53

It’s not his majority, it’s the party’s. If the PLP wants rid - and it’s becoming increasingly obvious which way it’s going - he’s toast. The Tories are utterly ruthless when they want someone gone.

Yes, theoretically it’s four years until the next election but we’ve had three in the last five years. I can’t see this government going the distance.

Peregrina · 01/10/2020 16:03

I live in hope. But I would expect them to blame nasty EU, nasty US if Biden wins, nasty whoever else they can think of.

Peregrina · 01/10/2020 16:04

I assume that Johnson could engineer an election right now if he wanted. He has a sufficient majority to either get the legislation through, or to repeal the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 01/10/2020 16:15

All these media stories about not earning enough, relationship problems with Carrie, ongoing post Covid issues......it’s all setting the scene.

The story about his income was spread by some lying shit-stirrer.

The PM was asked about his health in the TV update the other day (someone asked about his health and Long Covid). He responded that he is fitter than he was before he contracted covid and that, being overweight is part of the problem and that he has lost some weight. He also exercises every day.

He may get evicted by Tories who care more for the economy than the health of the nation.

Zeebeezee · 01/10/2020 16:23

Brexit... hmmm the last sting of a dying hubristic wasp.

Will be an interesting few months ahead. Covid, lockdowns, Christmas, the flu vaccine, dark nights, short days, bad weather and so on.

I doubt Doris gives a damn right now, he appears not to be able to string two words together anymore. But power to MEN is the ultimate prize. So we shall see.

VinylDetective · 01/10/2020 16:27

Precisely. Some truth telling shit stirrer who’s setting the scene for him to exit stage right. Even the vile Allison Pearson who was his greatest fan is now saying how rough he looks.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 01/10/2020 16:36

Yes. It isn't the story itself that's significant, it's the willingness of the Murdoch press to publish.

Disconnect · 01/10/2020 16:47

I really hope the Mail (and Telegraph) don't now go all sloppy-shouldered about Brexit and turn on BJ as if they were not mainly responsible for spreading the populist opinions that led to half the country believing they were doing the right thing voting for brexit.
Fair enough, turn on BJ, but this right-wing press must accept responsibility for the crap that is going to come with brexit.

Disconnect · 01/10/2020 16:49

slopey-shouldered not sloppy - but sloppy isn't a bad typo in this context.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 01/10/2020 17:01

I think I can safely assure you that the right wing press will not be accepting any responsibility at all.
