Do you tip your hairdresser?

Posting here for traffic

I have a hair appointment next week and am a bit nervous as I haven’t been to the hairdressers in a few years. Just wondering do people tip their hairdressers? And how much?

No but I go to a chain franchise rather than an independent small business, and I also spend around £150-£250 on my highlights/cut

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 27/09/2020 20:51

10%.
My haircut costs £49.50 and I tip £5.

TiptopJ · 27/09/2020 20:52

No and my friend who is a hairdresser says its lovely when customers do but they don't expect it and arent upset when people don't. Their wage is covered by the cost of the haircut just like everyone else's is.

SBTLove · 27/09/2020 20:52

I tip the junior that washes my hair, they are in such a low wage.

kyles101 · 27/09/2020 20:53

I've never really been sure about this... the owner now cuts mine so it seems a bit Hmm to tip her, but I did once give her kids some money when they had to hang around waiting whilst she styled my hair for me after hours.

hauntedvagina · 27/09/2020 20:53

No. I pay £150 for my haircut, that's plenty.

AgnesNaismith · 27/09/2020 20:54

No, it costs a ridiculous amount as it is (£200) if I paid 50-75 I would tip though.

RettyPriddle · 27/09/2020 20:55

Yes. I tip approx. ten per cent. But only because she’s really good and I know the money goes into her own pocket. She also is much cheaper than my previous hairdresser 😀

Charleyhorses · 27/09/2020 20:55

I always tip a fiver. Pay 30 quid.

Notthetoothfairy · 27/09/2020 20:55

£5 for the hairdresser and £2 for the junior.

JustHereWithPopcorn · 27/09/2020 20:56

Nope, i pay about £80 and I feel that's enough without adding on a tip.

Wakemeupwhenthisisover · 27/09/2020 20:57

I do usually a £5

taranaki · 27/09/2020 20:58

I did back when we paid for things in cash but nowadays it's more typical to pay with debit card so i rarely tip hairdressers or taxi drivers etc

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/09/2020 20:59

Mine is £34 and I usually tip £3-£4.

Lilybet1980 · 27/09/2020 20:59

Nope. I don’t tip in a spa or a nail salon in the UK either. I have given my hair dresser a bottle of wine at Christmas but only if I happen to have an appointment in the week before.

2pinkginsplease · 27/09/2020 20:59

I don’t tip my hairdresser as she he owns the place, i do give the junior £1 or £2.

AgeLikeWine · 27/09/2020 20:59

No.

Hairdressers are free to set their prices at whatever they consider the optimal level for their services they provide in their local market. Why would I want to voluntarily pay more?

Rebelwithallthecause · 27/09/2020 21:00

No way

They take 15 minutes and then spend the rest of the time trying to curl it to make up the time for the appointment despite me saying not to

MissMarplesHandbag · 27/09/2020 21:00

Yes, I always tip mine £5

Mindymomo · 27/09/2020 21:01

I used to tip the Saturday girl who washed my hair, but not my hairdresser, it seems a bit awkward. They are now adding £2/£3 extra for PPE.

Griselda1 · 27/09/2020 21:01

I used to tip very generously and have a standing appointment every month. After lockdown they apparently booked in all their clients and announced that they had done so. They hadn't booked me in and couldn't accommodate me for ages. So I returned but will not tip them again. It might seem mean but I was really offended.

bubblesforlife · 27/09/2020 21:02

No, the cost of a haircut and highlights in London is insane!
Also, I don’t get tipped for doing my job.... I deal with people.

TigerDroveAgain · 27/09/2020 21:03

Yes, I don’t tip the owner who does my colour, he’s a mate and it would feel really weird but I tip the stylist who washes and cuts it usually £10 ( it costs about £110) but last time it was £20 as I picked up the wrong note! I’m fast getting used to cards only

burglarbettybaby · 27/09/2020 21:05

Mine is about 35 and I give about 3 pound or so.

Sparklesocks · 27/09/2020 21:05

Yes a few quid. And I often give a pound or two to the salon apprentice who washes my hair.
