Do you tip your hairdresser?

I have a hair appointment next week and am a bit nervous as I haven’t been to the hairdressers in a few years. Just wondering do people tip their hairdressers? And how much?

No, as she owns the large independent salon I go to, and it costs me £120 each time. I do buy my hair products there though, and get her something for Christmas and birthdays. I do tip the junior who washes it, and the therapist who does my waxing, as I assume they are on a low-ish wage.

MayIJustAsk · 27/09/2020 22:37

As an ex hairdresser no I do not 😂

OhTheRoses · 27/09/2020 22:38

Been going to her for over 20 years. She is cheap for SW London: cut, blow dry and highlights (three colours). Every six weeks £140. Always give her £10.

Funnily enough I was texted before lockdown was released so I could be one of the first booked in. And she always fits me in if I need a quick blow dry if we are going out.

tanqueray10 · 27/09/2020 22:41

No I don’t tip. I find it really awkward for some reason, but I do give her £20 at Christmas x

Anordinarymum · 27/09/2020 22:42

I don't go to the hairdresser very often but when I do I always leave a tip and wish I didn't :(

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 27/09/2020 23:45

Yes, I always tip. £5 or £10 depending on what I'm having done so about 10%.

Same with taxis and restaurants.

Tavannach · 27/09/2020 23:50

Yes, roughly 10% and I leave a couple of quid at the front desk for the junior.

CherryPieface · 27/09/2020 23:53

I always worry about this - my hair cut and colour comes in at about £150 which I think is loads. I used to tip £10, since we’ve gone cashless I don’t tip anything as they don't have an electronic way of doing this. Takes the stress out of the situation!

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 28/09/2020 00:22

I used to tip back when cash was king but since paying by contactless and at about £150 each visit, no.

Sssloou · 28/09/2020 00:32

I have wash, olaplex, cut and roots (no blow dry) every 6 weeks - usually about £120 - she said it would be “a bit more” after lock down as she couldn’t fit enough people in the salon at once - I didn’t ask how much more - she charged me £180 ..... not going back! Never tipped as she is the salon owner - seems inappropriate.

Pipandmum · 28/09/2020 00:37

Yes I give the person who washes it £2 and the stylist £5.

Figgyboa · 28/09/2020 00:44

I do, my hairdresser does a good job. I usually tip 10-15%

PivotPivott · 28/09/2020 00:48

Nope

Pixxie7 · 28/09/2020 00:55

Yes about 10%

Bluesheep8 · 28/09/2020 07:18

No. I have already paid her to cut my hair. She has done a job and received payment for it. I do my job, I get paid. None of my customers tip me.

Sceptre86 · 28/09/2020 07:20

I get mine done now and again , am looking forward to getting it done this week and expecting to pay about £70 for 4 hours work. I will tip 10%

Bluesheep8 · 28/09/2020 07:21

I pay my hairdresser £30 every 4 weeks to wash, cut and dry my hair. I have done this for the last 4 years. It's about 30 minutes work.

Coulddowithanap · 28/09/2020 07:22

I used to round up to the nearest 10. (Probably only ever a few £ tip)

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 28/09/2020 07:25

No, they get paid, I don’t tip the Amazon delivery driver so why would I tip the hairdresser. Years ago I would but that was when they were paid less as there was no minimum wage and certain occupations earned a lot less money

doctorhamster · 28/09/2020 07:29

Yes. My costs £30 and I only go twice a year. I give a £5 tip. If I was paying £100+ to go every couple of months I wouldn't tip.

user1487194234 · 28/09/2020 12:02

Yes I tip £20

fatherfintanstack · 28/09/2020 12:08

Yes because she gives me a late appointment after work even though my hair is long and takes ages. It's expensive (hence worth her while) so I don't go mad but do add on an extra tenner as I appreciate her accommodating me.

Maireas · 28/09/2020 12:26

No. It cost me £50 before lockdown, now £60. Takes 40 mins. I don't tip the assistant in Boots, the car mechanic or the Amazon driver. Why hairdressers?

DorisDances · 28/09/2020 12:54

Rule of thumb was always tips if wanted for staff but not for the owner.

ErickBroch · 28/09/2020 12:58

No - I go to a high end salon and it's expensive!
