Do you tip your hairdresser?

Posting here for traffic

I have a hair appointment next week and am a bit nervous as I haven’t been to the hairdressers in a few years. Just wondering do people tip their hairdressers? And how much?

I give £5 if it's quite cheap (a couple of years ago I had cut+colour+dry from a trainee for about £40!!) but recent experiences have been over £100 for the same, so I don't in that case.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/09/2020 21:06

Yes, when I regularly went to a city centre salon a generous tip got me an even more generous reduction in price. Now I use an individual hairdresser who works alone from her home. I always tip her too

cherrypiepie · 27/09/2020 21:07

My hair cut costs £9 so I round it up to a tenner.

The expensive nail /beauty /hair I don't tip but put a tenner in a card for Christmas for my lovely nail tech/therapist.

@Griselda1 I would be offended too

Rigamorph · 27/09/2020 21:07

Incidentally during lockdown I have been cutting and colouring my own hair for about £7 and nobody has noticed any difference so I think I will save myself a lot of money!!
Nice to have a special treat, or a hair-up for weddings etc tho

GoldenPlover · 27/09/2020 21:09

No I don't, she is absolutely fantastic but the cost of the appointment already stretches me to my absolute max that I can afford

katy1213 · 27/09/2020 21:09

No. When I hear the latest about his holidays and see the fancy car parked outside, I reckon he should be tipping me!

Scarby9 · 27/09/2020 21:09

Yes.
It used to be £18 so I rounded it up to £20. Now it is £25 and I still add £2!

AlwaysLatte · 27/09/2020 21:10

I do but I must admit I don't pay much - usually £5 but it costs around £120, I really need to up it next time Blush

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/09/2020 21:10

No. My hairdresser is self employed and owns her own salon so she charges what she wants. She makes way more money than I do, she's very talented and has lots of clients. if I was going to an employed hairdresser who was on a low wage I would.

AlwaysCheddar · 27/09/2020 21:15

Nope!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 27/09/2020 21:19

No - but I go to a social enterprise barber where you choose what you want to pay, so it would be a bit pointless.
I went to a beauty salon recently where the service, therapists & treatment were all amazing, so tipped generously - but if I go somewhere where the service is a bit "meh" I don't bother,

AnnaSW1 · 27/09/2020 21:20

I never tip because my haircut costs over £150. I feel like that's plenty. He's not hard up!

ImSleepingBeauty · 27/09/2020 21:22

If I’m happy with the cut I will. 10%.

CallieCat19 · 27/09/2020 21:23

Okay, bit of a mixed bag then! I’m not sure wether to or not really, it’s my first time going and I don’t wanna come across as stingy as I’m hoping to become a regular!

CallieCat19 · 27/09/2020 21:24

It will be costing me about £120 though which is a lot of money for me and I don’t really want to be paying more if tipping isn’t the done thing

I used to pay nearly £100 for a hair cut and more and was never truly happy with the cut, went to a little local salon a couple of years ago when I couldn't get a booking at my usual and their senior stylist charged £36 and as a fellow curly hair owner she did a brilliant job and understood exactly how to cut it so it works curly and if I straighten it. I always tip £10 which she initially protested at as she's just doing her job, but I just said just get the DC an ice cream (we'd been talking about a new ice cream place that had opened in town and her DC were nagging to go), she's taught me how to style and dry my curly hair at home and honestly I'd pay double what she charges and still tip her. I haven't tipped in the past when I've spent £70-£100 for a mediocre cut

MissCalamity · 27/09/2020 21:34

No, I go every 8 weeks and spend about £55-£70, but I always get her a bottle and some naice biscuits at Christmas though.

notsodimwit · 27/09/2020 21:34

My wash, trim and blow dry costs £18 and I give her £20 so that's a £2 tip ...I feel quite mean now seeing what some of you tip 😕 it takes about 15-20 minutes I have long straight hair so it's a quick trim.

CMOTDibbler · 27/09/2020 21:45

No, never

BadDucks · 27/09/2020 21:54

Not anymore as the prices have gone up a lot in the last 12 months. I used to get it cut every 8 weeks but now I stretch it to 12-14 weeks because of the cost.

Lolalovesroses · 27/09/2020 21:59

My haircut and colour costs £50.I always tip £5. I thought most people did.I worked as a waitress when at Uni and got more in tips than I did in wages!

DramaAlpaca · 27/09/2020 22:03

My hairdressers have a box for tips under the counter, so it's easy just to pay and give them a bit extra to put in the box. It's all then shared amongst the junior staff.

Pachonga · 27/09/2020 22:09

Always but then I live in the US where tipping is a way of life. When I had my hair done in the UK, I would tip too, but it’s much more down to personal discretion there rather than compulsory.

CuppaZa · 27/09/2020 22:16

Always. Mine costs £120 and I tip £10-15

Frostiesfortea · 27/09/2020 22:22

Yes every time. I pay £80 and give her £10 x
