To think why this is one of the reasons we have an obesity problem.

Friend on facebook has put about 2 stone on this past year. She posted a selfie the other day with a statement saying how she's finally learning to love herself, she may not be perfect but it's her body and she loves it!!! She's on the verge of being obese and suffers with chronic backache. Of course she had comments saying 'looking good hun' 'you beauty!' Etc.

I've noticed quite a lot of younger ones doing this 'be fat and proud' crap.

Am I wrong to think that this along with many other things is why we have an obesity problem.

So bored of threads like these.

Have you seen the map the government created to try and map the causes and influencing factors of obesity? Clue: it’s not as simple as you suggest it is OP:

I hope your friend never finds out you feel this way. You have no idea what goes on in other people’s minds, social media is definitely not an accurate representation. I would feel horrified and ashamed if one of my friends said this to me, I am so relieved we can open conversations about our weight and body image at any size, without judgement.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 27/09/2020 20:07

I've known people in real life have very poor diets but be very slim and some of the comments on here by slim people - like carbs and fruit are evil tends to be most common - are bonkers.

Remember the bananas are Haribo thread? Pure comedy gold. The low-carbers put the vegans to shame. It's always good for a laugh.

Funnily enough I noticed the other day a show I used to watch - supersize v superskinny has just dropped on prime. I remember a lot of the skinny ones often lived on caffeine drinks and tobacco! Various tests were done on the participants to assess their health status and the very slim were often just as unhealthy as the overweight people.

Now, now, Graphista, this is MN. You know there's no such thing. They are all keto and run 10km before work and then strength train daily. Anyone who doesn't is either fat or definitely, without a doubt, going to become fat if they don't low carb, 100% for definite.

tempnamechange98765 · 27/09/2020 20:07

YANBU, I don't like the way being very overweight and not doing anything about it is portrayed as being "body positive". There's nothing more important than being healthy.

Obesity is often an emotional issue/eating disorder though, so it's not always easy to do something about it. Nevertheless "pro ana" websites that were aimed at anorexics are so dangerous, so all this "body positivity" stuff for really overweight/obese people is just as bad.

@HotPatootiebootie so sorry that you have to read shit like this. Sending you a virtual squeeze and a fist bump.

BillyAndTheSillies · 27/09/2020 20:09

I stopped trying to lose weight while shops still sold my size. But I'm not happy. I'm a few weeks away from weight loss surgery.

I have nothing against people embracing their size but no one ever talks about the negatives of being overweight. Even if they don't have health problems now, they may come eventually.

I don’t like the way being a miserable vicious cunt is portrayed as ‘concerned’ but you know what they say?
Shit happens.

Eckhart · 27/09/2020 20:10

*Personal. Responsibility.

We have to sometimes admit that we have a personal responsibility for ourselves and what pit into ourselves. Yes, ads etc do influence us, but at the end of the day, it is not an employee of x company holding a gun to my head*

We have to sometimes admit that the food industry funds and thereby strongly influences the scientific studies that are allowed to be published. These are the studies whose results are used by the NHS to produce our 'healthy eating plate'. That's why obesity issues rocketed when the NHS started issuing eating guidelines. Even people who are following the guidelines put on weight. Even those who are 'taking personal responsibility' for what they eat.

@HotPatootiebootie

Only got about 5 posts in before I had to post so not read the lot.

I am fat, 16 stone, maybe even 17 after this shitty year. I am also bipolar, have a few autoimmune doseases and am a survivor of child hood sexual abuse and was raised by a narcisitic monther and a pretty absent father. I Was beaten black and blue by my first partner. But I have spent enough time in therapy to correct my drug abuse, I no longer need to self medicate with a sack of cocoaine a week and while I drink far too much its not as bad as it used to be. I also manage to stick to a monogomous relationship and am stable enough to not need to rely on very serious mood stabilisers 365. I have made massive progress, more than most people would in recovering from all this shit. I have gained 2 degrees, volunteered in a school delivering a reading programme for the less able kids. I also delivered a creative writing programme despite being disabled and immunocomrpomised. My kids.

But sure. Being fat is the worse thing I can be. I should be incredibly miserable until I mend my ways and become a healthy weight. So I will pop off rioght now and get some intensive pyschotherapy to unpick all my trauma and actually find out WHY I am fat. Because ive never thought about that before! How revolutionary! Now- as the NHS havent been able to even sort out CBT for my suicidal ASD son in the last year, will you be picking up the bill for me so I can finally actually be HAPPY and SKINNY?

Or can I just please please beg your permission to be myself and crack the fuck on with my life? Im fat. But eveybody on this thread that has agreed with the OP is a judgy cuntmuffin of the highest order because you have NO FUCKING IDEA what has led to people being fat. So off you fuck to hoik your super slim pants up to your super skinny single chin.

Live your life like a fucking rock star and to fuck with anyone who ever tries to say you are less than because of some extra weight. ❤️
Ethicalbluey45 · 27/09/2020 20:13

YABU your friend might be going through something difficult in her life and might be turning to food for comfort and by posting the picture of herself she might have been having an okay day, i personally dont tell my family and friends when i am having a shitty time because of something like this - subject of discussion on social media instead of asking your friend how she is. Unfortunately one comment can send an unstable person to do irrational things so be nice. Most overweight people would like to be a few pounds less although they look and come across confident

Eckhart · 27/09/2020 20:14

@Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd

What is your argument for a higher carb diet? (I'm assuming you have one although I may have interpreted your post incorrecty)

You're the 3rd person I've asked on this thread, nobody else has answered yet.

ClothesHangingOnTheFloor · 27/09/2020 20:14

Being overweight, or more extremely, obese, does have long term implications for your health, yourability to do some activities.

Just like smoking, or alcohol consumption, or drug taking (including prescription drugs in some cases).

In my opinion, the issue stems from people who are truly happy with how they look and how they feel about themselves, versus, promoting healthy lifestyles to , mainly, young people.

There is a balance to be had... Those who truly struggle to lose weight for whatever reason, shouldn't be ostracised and made fun of... But the message of the advantages of a healthy lifestyle shouldn't be underplayed either, just in case someone takes offence.

We don't worry about stating 'smoking kills' or 'drink wisely', but somehow stating 'Eat healthily within your recommended daily calory allowance' is seen as 'fat bashing'.

Obesity DOES kill...regardless of the reason for it, and regardless of whether the person's is happy with themselves. It isn't a lifestyle that should be promoted.

Why do I need a bloody argument, Eckhart? Do you go round in your life this chippy taking everything the wrong way and getting your knickers in a twist? Why do you make assumptions about random people on the internet? You just assume everyone who isn't keto or whatever is 'high carb'? Hmm How odd. There are a load of different ways to eat all over the world.

Why does someone need to answer you or justify themselves to you because you are telling them they need to argue with you?

That's odd AF.

Literally no one is saying this here. We are simply saying this woman should be allowed to love herself and people should be allowed to validate her.

Notice in the op, no one commented 'your fat looks amazing' they were saying the woman herself was gorgous.

People are not fat, they have fat.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 27/09/2020 20:18

And eating 20g of cheese for dinner strikes me as fucked up eating, honestly. Not sure what kind of diet that poster follows. At any rate, I'm lactose intolerant so no cheese features in my eating. I'm vegetarian, too.

Oh, believe me, I'm not Hmm. I've got Family Fortunes on in the background but I need to go and do the washing up and put away some soup I made earlier.

libbsop · 27/09/2020 20:24

It depends if naturally she is the larger size it's probably healthier for her to be bigger. For example say if she was previously 8 stone and to be that size she had to obsessively watch her diet and do tons of exercise to the point of exhaustion dehydration etc then 10 stone is healthier for her if she can relax a little better mental health, have decent portions have more energy .

bisvuit · 27/09/2020 20:26

I think societies methods for solving obesity causes the opposite effect.

Move chocolate from the checkout ? Okay I won't grab one chocolate bar on impulse I will spend ages browsing the aisle and get more than I need.

Shrink chocolate bars? Ok fine, but now I will eat 2 not 1.

This.

The BS about ‘Promoting Obesity’ needs to stop. And in this specific example is a totally flawed argument.

Sorry, unless you mean us fatties should stay inside and wear black until you’ve deemed it acceptable for us to come outside again OP?

HotPatootiebootie · 27/09/2020 20:27

@Zebrasandfairytales

Thank you! I am just angry. Not for me, I let go of that a long time ago. But for other people reading this that are not in the same place of healing that I am. I am the most self confident and at peace person I know. Because I have learned how to accept my past, my bodies limitations, the affects that that has had on my life and my future. I accept it, embrace it and know I am doing my best. But other people can read things like this and for every one person posting, there will be 5 sat at home gutted and feeling like absolute shite because in this society the very worst thing you can be is FAT.

Actually, thats not true.

The worst thing you can be is FAT and HAPPY because all the skinny wankers can't deal with it because is demeans their body currency. They work hard denying themselves treats and slogging away in the gym searching for that elusive self acceptance, happiness and popularity that comes with being body perfect and like the front of the magazines and movies. But then they see a fat person being happy EVEN WITH THE FAT and it depreciates and demeans the effort that they themselves put in to achieve the same. Also, most peoples flaws are not immeadiately obvious. You could be a closet druggy, a serial cheater or a shoplifter and its not written all over your body. It isnt the forst thing that people see. But being fat means you are always judged immeadiately and first impressions count. People see your flaw and subconsciously they are reminded of their own flaws and it feels unpleasant. Thats where the anger and bitterness comes from.

Still makes them idiots though.

eaglejulesk · 27/09/2020 20:28

It's not about being proud to be overweight. It's about loving yourself.
Which is step 1 in positive mental health.

Well said. Constantly pressuring people to lose weight is unhealthy in itself.

What rubbish. I have just lost a stone with diet and exercise, i did this because I wanted to be thinner, fitter and healthier. And I want to survive COVID, god forbid I catch it. If I see someone who is fat and happy I don’t have negative thoughts about them FFS, it’s their life and their choices. Please don’t bash those of us who prefer to be slim. Our choices count too.
