Instant or ‘snobby’ coffee???

I have over the years become a bit of a coffee snob. Yes I will admit it. I used to drink instant. Was introduced to filter coffee and thought it was heaven!! Then years later used a friends nespresso machine and have never looked back. So, are you a coffee snob or is it just a hot drink???
Yabu. It’s just a drink
Yanbu. No instant for me!

I don't love coffee and rarely drink it. On the other hand tea has to be high quality and loose. YANBU.

ClaudiaWankleman · 25/09/2020 10:34

Since lockdown I have really enjoyed my morning coffee ritual. I wake up, shower, get downstairs, put my moka pot on, make breakfast and check emails, sit down to eat and drink coffee and then reopen my laptop to start work properly. I’ve tried a new bag of coffee every few weeks too. It’s been a small luxury that I wouldn’t have had if I only drank instant.

cologne4711 · 25/09/2020 10:35

I have filter coffee. It's hardly "snobby".

AriettyHomily · 25/09/2020 10:35

Snob I'm afraid, can't drink instant anymore.

I don't like Nespresso either, I like my French Press with decent coffee.

BIWI · 25/09/2020 10:36

Cafetiere coffee here, always - for years. Nothing snobby about it at all.

ummnamechange · 25/09/2020 10:38

snobby is one of the words that gives me the rage. I like Nespresso coffee a lot, i prefer it to instant, and very much prefer it to costa.

Do i look down on or disregard people who dont like it? no..

I like my kids to eat with a modicum of table manners and be able to hold a conversation while they eat rather than slumo face first into their mash and inhale. Does this make me a snob?

contrmary · 25/09/2020 10:39

The worst ground coffee is better than the best instant coffee. It's not snobbish. I drink cafetiere or moka pot coffee at home, instant at the office (haven't been in there for six months though).

BTW if you drink instant coffee black, the secret is double stirring. Stir vigourously, let it settle for a moment, then stir vigourously again. It genuinely makes cheap instant coffee more palatable.

thepeopleversuswork · 25/09/2020 10:44

The idea that wanting to drink proper coffee is "snobby" is a bit like saying you're a snob for wanting to eat proper pasta rather than spaghetti hoops...

Proper coffee just tastes far better than instant. It doesn't make you a snob to acknowledge that.

I will drink instant if its the only alternative but surely no-one prefers it?

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 25/09/2020 10:46

Instant here, I like Co-OP's own fairtrade one.

Because I drink my coffee black I find filter coffee way too strong.

Pascha · 25/09/2020 10:46

I dig out the cafetiere on most weekend mornings. during the week it's usually nice instant or, more often, tea.

Honestly, I've never noticed all that much of a difference between strong, black instant and strong, black filtered coffee. It all tastes similar to me and I'd happily drink either.

Imloosingmyshit · 25/09/2020 10:48

Lol. Think I’ve annoyed people using the term ‘snobby’. It’s just a term that has been used in the family, not actually meant to mean that there is a difference in class to the product or the person! Apologies for that. But I do also like tea. But I’ve only ever used a tea bag,so I’ve nothing else to compare it to!

Sorry to tell you this but Nespresso is not snobby coffee! A real coffee snob (like myself!) will think that!

JayeAshe · 25/09/2020 10:51

We never have instant, but the only coffee we use is Lidl's Bellarom gold, nothing snobby about us Grin

Reallybadidea · 25/09/2020 10:51

I'm astonished that nobody has accused you of ruining the environment because you use a Nespresso or said that a cafetiere makes better coffee. Probably because you distracted them with the word 'snobby' Grin

Anyway, YANBU.

Why is it that in the U.K., as a general rule, any foods which are not highly processed, convenience foods, are described as “snobby”?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/09/2020 10:53

Artisan stovetop user here. Can't touch instant.

ToastyCrumpet · 25/09/2020 10:54

Bean to cup machine here. I win.

I was hesitant about spend so much money on something to make coffee but I adore it and don’t know how I managed without it. All I need now is someone to bring the coffee to me in bed.

Anordinarymum · 25/09/2020 10:54

Me too. Can't drink instant coffee at all. It tastes nasty.
Imloosingmyshit · 25/09/2020 10:55

It’s just a family thing. ‘Instant or snobby coffee’ don’t know where it came from. It’s just a term we have always used Blush

We fresh grind outlets, and do pour over, every morning.
We camping, I have a percolator that sits right on the fire.
No instant...ever, please!

Seafog · 25/09/2020 10:56

Grind it ourselves *

Emmelina · 25/09/2020 10:56

I have a nespresso coffee late morning, otherwise I’m falling asleep at my desk! Otherwise I have a nice fair trade instant from Sainsbury’s that does the job well enough.

Mintjulia · 25/09/2020 10:56

There's instant and then there's instant.

If the instant on offer was Nescafe original, I'd take the trouble to make filter coffee. It it was a good quality instant, then I'd have instant. * Other brands are available Smile

I would never use a nespresso machine - disastrous for the environment and stupidly expensive. I can grind fresh beans and make a seriously fabulous cup of coffee for that price.

Angel2702 · 25/09/2020 10:57

I mostly drink filtered coffee but will have instant without issue. I’m not a fan of the pod type machines Though I prefer a standard filter machine so I can chose a bigger variety of coffee and switch between beans or ready ground.
