Cleaner wants to me to put a toilet brush in every bathroom

We have three toilets and just started with a new cleaner.

I've been asked by the agency to put a toilet brush in every toilet. I don't want to, I hate toilet brushes I don't want three of them.

I've looked at the disposable ones but they are expensive and don't look great for the environment.

Never had a cleaner make this request before, is it usual?

OP posts:
Oodlesofnoodles20 · 24/09/2020 09:45

I have three toilets, have a toilet brush in each. Unless you are sticking your hand down there with a scrubber there’s no way your toilet will be as clean as if you just pop bleach down. Deluding yourselves in the name of snobbery Grin
OP, pick up some toilet brushes for your cleaner if you expect her to clean your toilets.

Elsewyre · 24/09/2020 09:45

@PatriciaPerch

I can't stand toilet brushes either and i don't understand skid marks either, we just use bleach under the rim and it cleans the toilet that way
I'm struggling with how you "don't understand skidmarks"?
Namechangeme87 · 24/09/2020 09:45

No toilet brushes here I don’t understand them ! Shitty bog rolled covered brush Stuck in its own tub next to the loo . Sooo weird ?! People absolutely do use them to get rid of skids etc I have seen the evidence myself With the ones at work 😂😂
And during conversations about my non use of them “ but how do you get rid of the skid marks “

My toilet is clean , I use bleach and those fizzy lime scale remover blocks. Bleach and a cleaning sponge thing for the seat and lid etc .

Of course this is a slight separate issue in that I do think something should be provided for the cleaner to use rather than her having to stick her hands down your bog

StillAlive76 · 24/09/2020 09:47

I also have three toilets in the house. There is a toilet brush in each one for my own convenience when cleaning. It is hidden in the skinny freestanding unit which also houses extra loo roll and has the loo roll holder on the top, so it is not 'on display' (which I agree is pretty gross).
I only ever use black toilet brushes for obvious reasons. They sit in a tall ceramic holder which does not rust, and they sit in some bleach.
They are replaced every few months (just the bristle head part, not the whole brush).
I could never walk from room to room dripping dirty toilet water everywhere! And you cannot get a loo clean without a proper scrub IMO.
The odd thing is, if your loo brush is sitting in bleach, it is probably cleaner than lots of other areas in your house that you are happy to touch all the time without thinking!

seayork2020 · 24/09/2020 09:47

Bleach is not good for the environment and all these other weird chemicals people shove down toilets

AlwaysLatte · 24/09/2020 09:48

I hate loo brushes as well but I hate cleaning without them even more! I bought these and have one in all 4 loos, they're so much easier to keep clean, so much more hygienic.

@icedaisy

Feel like I've walked into a parallel universe. First time ever on MN I've seen a thread where people have brushes and are shocked at those that don't.....nobody ever says they have a brush here.
Same! I thought that it would be 100% yanbu and comments that the cleaner clearly isn't a mumsnetter
Florencex · 24/09/2020 09:48

Of course you should have a toilet brush alongside every toilet! 😳Nobody “likes” toilet brushes but they are a necessity.

MagpieSong · 24/09/2020 09:50

@Kalula, good point! And yes, probably best not to know.

Kalula · 24/09/2020 09:50

@Pobblebonk

I don't understand your concern for the environment when you regularly squirt loads of chemicals into the drains rather than using elbow grease and a reusable brush?
This. Reading people using all these chemicals and disposable materials, it is no longer any wonder the planet is in such bad shape. And squirting chemicals does nothing unless you BRUSH the boil to lift the particles. It's the brushing action that cleans, not the chemicals so much.

It's like squeezing some toothpaste in your mouth, swishing it around, and spitting it out.

How is that cleaning your teeth?

It's the exact same principle.

Or, soaping yourself up, then doing nothing (not using a washer etc) and rinsing. Like, how is that going to get you clean?

TableFlowerss · 24/09/2020 09:50

As for using rubber gloves... once you’ve cleaned the loo with rubber gloves on (like OP suggested) what you supposed to do with them? Through them in the bin after every toilet?

How unhygienic wandering around the house with the same gloves on to clean all three loo’s- with dripping wares shit.

If they take them off in the bathroom what a faff trying to put them on again without touching the rubber bit..... disgusting

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 24/09/2020 09:51

I can't comment as I don't have three toilets.

KenDodd · 24/09/2020 09:52

No OP, don't evade and answer what do you do with those gloves afterwards

Yes, I really want to know as well.
A pp said they keep a set of gloves for toilet and litter tray. Ok, litter tray I can see, gloves wouldn't actually come into contact with anything other than the tray itself. OP said she sticks her hand down toilet to clean shit off, gloves would get wet in dirty toilet water. What happens to dirty gloves afterwards? Likewise pp who also cleans toilet with gloves?

pastandpresent · 24/09/2020 09:52

You can get nice looking toilet brush that suit your bathroom decor that aren't obvious and visible. It's far easier to use brush than stick your hand into the toilet.

Nomoreilove · 24/09/2020 09:53

*buy

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/09/2020 09:53

No toilet brush here. The shape of the toilets means that you can't give a proper clean down the bottom at the u bend if you use a brush - only using a brush is pretty minging tbh. Rubber gloves and a cloth means you can give a proper clean in the right bits like the u bend and around the rim.

Very few skid marks in this house either - the occasional tiny smear above the water is wipes with toilet paper at the time, below the water will go with the next flush. I agree with the OP, I really worry about some people aim / diet if a bowel movement results in shit all around the inside of the bowl.

I have never owned a toilet brush. they are disgusting things- covered in poo standing in a pot. Yuck . A hearty dose of thick bleach gets rid of everything and if not, a quick wipe of the bowl with a disposable cloth does the job. Family of 4 and perfectly clean loos.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 24/09/2020 09:56

We have the Joseph Joseph ones that hold the bleach bottle at the side of the holder, they are easier to keep clean

JinglingHellsBells · 24/09/2020 09:57

All this pearl clutching over bleach- unless you tackle the big boys of industry and farmers who pour all sorts into the water supply, a bit of domestic bleach is not making any difference. I assume you all use ecover laundry stuff, etc etc etc to stack up your principles?

Flibbitygibbit · 24/09/2020 09:57

Ha ha ha, aren't you meant to be in lessons ? The bell will have gone 😀

JinglingHellsBells · 24/09/2020 09:58

People must have weird poos if they leave half of it in the loo.

canigooutyet · 24/09/2020 09:58

Do people not realise that bleach just bleaches the stains so they don't seem to be there?

Dishwashers - you put a mug in with a tea stain or dry ketchup on a plate, they come out with remnants still on them.

I use a brush and wipes/loo roll. I have a pair of gloves in the toilet that only get used there. When I flush the loo the brush gets a rinse. Anything left on the brush and the brush gets swished around in the toilet bowl with some bleach and rinsed when flushed. In the loo holder there is some hot bleach water and this gets changed every time the toilet gets cleaned.
The wipes/loo roll is there for the seat and all the other areas the brush doesn't go like under the seat, handle etc. There's always a bottle of antibac cleaner on the side as well.

If it was more hygenic to wipe it down with a cloth or whatever, then you wouldn't find them in any public place, nhs building, restaurant etc.
