To feel happy at the sound of the rain?

It’s been a long bloody summer. I don’t like the hot weather at the best of times but with Covid and everything else this summer seems to have dragged on forever. I’ve felt depressed for months now. I’m fed up, I’m sick of being hot, I’m sick of the streets been full of people “exercising” ... I’m just sick of everything.

About half an hour ago it all went dark outside. Then the rain started, really pelting down on the windows and I instantly felt happier. I feel cosy, safe ... the dogs are tucked up on the couch, I’ve got music on ... I’m just sat listening to the rain in the darkness feeling finally that little bit happier.

Is there such a thing as reverse SAD? I’ve always felt down in the summer and “content” in winter.

It's a lovely day isn't it! Dark and cosy here too, dogs asleep, cup of tea and an iced bun (ok, I've had 4 😫) I bloody love autumn ... although I do hope the rain stops temporarily for the school run and dog walk!

Love2cycle · 23/09/2020 14:14

Yes me! I'm the same. I instantly feel in a better mood when the weather turns bad!!

blubberball · 23/09/2020 14:16

Same. I love the rain. My favourite is listening to the rain in bed with the windows open. I'm at work at the moment, but I have been known to relax to rain videos on YouTube. Some of them are hours long.

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 23/09/2020 14:26

Nothing better than listening to the rain on windows or on a caravan roof is even better if you have never been in one. i have a sleep app on my phone which is the sound of rain as well

iswhois · 23/09/2020 14:26

Yes I'm loving it. Working from home looking out onto my rainy patio.

Just the best feeling in the world- I love autumn and winter

SmellyDogBed · 23/09/2020 14:27

Oh I’m glad it isn’t just me! The worse the weather the better I feel, my mind instantly feels clearer and less stressed now. It’s so odd isn’t it?

You're a pluviophile. So am I.

iswhois · 23/09/2020 14:28

And I agree about the reverse SAD thing. Summer makes me hugely anxious, I think part of it is the expectation to always be "outside enjoying the weather!!!!"

People don't pressure each other so much in the winter

Now I want an iced bun 😂

I hate the rain cold and wind.

It can never be too hot, even last year in the Pyrenees when it reached 44'C i didn't mind.

OP you sound like my Mum, she loved the rain.

DrCoconut · 23/09/2020 14:31

I'm still disappointed with summer. Two consecutive years now of a couple of boiling hot days with the rest mediocre. And the wind and rain have been awful this year. Now it's the downhill slide into months of grey damp darkness. DS's asthma and autism exacerbated. And probably loads of restrictions due to Covid too. It's a big nooo from me. A small amount of rain at night while you're in bed is ok but not on the school run.

Cadent · 23/09/2020 14:34

YANBU. I love the rain. I also love hot sunny days, but a hot, sunny day feel wasted when you’re working. I like them just fine at the beach, lake etc.

buttersidedown · 23/09/2020 14:41

Oh yes! I was very pleased to be woken in the night by the sound of heavy heavy rain! And today I have been out for a walk in it, with my coat on, and have been very very happy!

Mintjulia · 23/09/2020 14:45

Yanbu if it makes you happy. I'm glad it's making someone happy.

It's making me tense. I'm redundant and today feels like the first day of autumn and heating bills I cannot afford Sad

firstimemamma · 23/09/2020 14:46

I feel similar op. Always disliked summer but seeing my son wearing his wellies and with a conker in each hand really made me smile today!

contrmary · 23/09/2020 14:46

I like the rain (so long as I'm not caught out in it). A heavy downpour on Friday and Saturday evening would be great too, drive my noisy neighbours back inside.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 23/09/2020 14:49

I prefer the spring and summer and I don't like the rain. Except at night for the garden.
BUT
I'm glad you do and others do too. It would be a sad world if we all liked the same.

We like what we like and it isn't unreasonable to like the rain.

Kanaloa · 23/09/2020 14:55

I love when it’s windy, rainy and dark - as long as I’m inside. Sitting with a good book and hearing the rain coming down outside is my ideal evening.

Sniv · 23/09/2020 15:08

I always enjoy a change in the weather. Yesterday was lovely for the equinox - we had a lovely sunny, late summer day and then I woke up in the night and enjoyed the ultimate cosy sound of the rain on the windows. Today feels like autumn.

MrsMariaReynolds · 23/09/2020 15:11

My favourite "Sleep Sound" set on my Alexa is heavy rain. I bloody love it! I only wish the temp would fall a bit more because the only thing I can feel right now after the rain is humidity. Ick! Cannot stand the heat--roll on Autumn!

Somethingsnappy · 23/09/2020 15:14

I put my cosy slippers on for the first time in months today and was able to stomach a cup of tea for the first time in ages too (I'm pregnant)..... Wonderful! YANBU and I agree with you completely. My spirits lift once the bad weather starts too. I want to wear a jumper!

dudsville · 23/09/2020 15:15

I like pretty much all weather. It's nice to see a good rain fall.

TheFormerChild · 23/09/2020 15:19

I love the rain, and thunderstorms.

deplorabelle · 23/09/2020 17:16

I get SAD in the summer too. I don't feel like it's socially acceptable to complain about summer so it's a really lonely feeling. I find hot weather very hard going and relentless.

MilkOfThePuppy · 23/09/2020 17:49

I don't know if it's reverse SAD, but I definitely prefer the cooler months of the year. Everything seems better when the temperature drops out of the summertime zone.
