To feel happy at the sound of the rain?

It’s been a long bloody summer. I don’t like the hot weather at the best of times but with Covid and everything else this summer seems to have dragged on forever. I’ve felt depressed for months now. I’m fed up, I’m sick of being hot, I’m sick of the streets been full of people “exercising” ... I’m just sick of everything.

About half an hour ago it all went dark outside. Then the rain started, really pelting down on the windows and I instantly felt happier. I feel cosy, safe ... the dogs are tucked up on the couch, I’ve got music on ... I’m just sat listening to the rain in the darkness feeling finally that little bit happier.

Is there such a thing as reverse SAD? I’ve always felt down in the summer and “content” in winter.

YABU where is the lit candle?

ilovesooty · 23/09/2020 17:57

I think it's been a horrible day. Even my cats wanted to come in at 2.30pm.

lynsey91 · 23/09/2020 17:59

No I don't like the rain at all and hate the wind.

I think we have had an awful summer. A few far too hot days but hardly any just nice warm sunny days. Lots of rain and lots and lots of wind.

Today has been a miserable day, grey and wet. I hate grey days. I hate that it isn't get light until quite a lot later in the mornings and earlier in the evening.

I find it so depressing. I would like to live somewhere where it is light all the time or, at least, only dark for a couple of hours.

When I went to Sweden a couple of years ago I loved that it never really got dark. Could never cope with their winters though

Sloth66 · 23/09/2020 18:11

I love the sound of rain on windows. It’s been dull and rainy today, that’s my type of weather. I don’t enjoy summer and struggle in the heat. Autumn is my favourIte season.
This evening I’m lighting my candles and cracking on with reading my book. ....

Here they come from under their stones, ready to tell us “There is no such thing as bad weather only unsuitable clothing.”
Well why bother with a roof on your house then.
Fucksake. Twats.

Witchend · 23/09/2020 18:25

I love hearing the rain. Makes me feel all snuggly in bed. Ds says the same.

soundsystem · 23/09/2020 18:26

We're loving it as well. Made a stew and the kids are into jammies early for lots of snuggles and stories. I've got broth mix soaking to make a big pot of soup tomorrow. I love Winter!

lynsey91 · 23/09/2020 18:55

Stew! It's September for goodness sake. I don't particularly like winter although it's the dark I hate, not the cold and love stew then but not this early in the year.

I had to turn the light on just after 6pm. I hate it. Nothing cosy about grey days, dark evenings or even afternoons and having to have the bloody lights on

Feellikedancingyeah · 23/09/2020 18:57

I feel exactly the same way as you OP. It's BLISS to be able to sleep properly and I'm so energised when the weather is cooler

Haha!
FizzyPink · 23/09/2020 19:31

I’m the biggest sun worshipper going but even I love being cosy inside and hearing the rain coming down.
And then feel terribly guilty because DP works outside in all weathers so will likely be getting soaked Blush

Starksforthewin · 23/09/2020 20:09

Here in the South East we’ve had far more than one or two days of hot weather!
Started back in March during lockdown and every month since then we’ve had many, many days of 25+ temperatures!

I’m another one grateful for cooler weather and I love rain.

RelaisBlu · 23/09/2020 20:17

YES! I love the sound of rain and the cool damp air coming through the window

Zoflorabore · 23/09/2020 20:21

Love it! Favourite thing to put on my phone on YouTube for background noise in bed is “heavy rain and thunderstorms” it’s just so soothing.

I live abroad weather on holiday and I love the extreme opposite here. The middle- not so much Smile

The80sweregreat · 23/09/2020 20:22

I like rain , but all my friends adore summer and now they will be the ones complaining about the cold and rain whilst I have to keep quiet! I hate it when they huddle up in a martyr kind of way and drone on about the cold and wanting it hot again and how they all feel so down! It's the opposite for me..(it'll be hard this year with covid to be fair to them , but usually it's a moan fest !)
I feel so different to must people regarding weather as the heat and summer is a drag for me. This years one was horrendously hot!

I’m sure this was meant to be insulting but it really made me laugh 😂 now I’m going to slither back under my rock and enjoy the cooler night 😉

I love it too! If I wake up and hear rain against the window it just makes me so happy. I’ve always wondered why too really, I think I’m maybe a bit lazy and the idea of gorgeous sunny days where the world is inviting you to do anything you want exhaust me a bit, let me curl up inside on a rainy day with a good book any day!

fatherfintanstack · 24/09/2020 06:42

It's been a glorious summer here (weather wise at least 😬!) and I love the late summer light especially but waking up this morning to heavy rain and not having to get up has been absolute bliss! Autumn is my absolute favourite.

Etinox · 24/09/2020 06:46

I love all sorts of weather!
Lying here very listening to the rain. I’m wfh today (a rarity, not my norm) and very happy listening to it, knowing I don’t have to move for 2 hours.

Willowmartha1 · 24/09/2020 06:47

Same ! I hate to say it but the summer makes me feel down, the pressure to be out and about doing stuff because the sun is shining makes me anxious ! Much much happier when it's raining.

Ginfordinner · 24/09/2020 06:50

I hate this assumption that it has been hot everywhere. We haven't all enjoyed the heat all summer that the southern half of the country has.
Plus our boiler has broken down and is waiting for a spare part, so we have no heating or hot water.

So YABVU.

plunkplunkfizz · 24/09/2020 07:00

I wouldn’t even say we all got the same in the south. I’m south east and I and just about everyone thinks the weather has been pretty rubbish from July onwards bar the one scorching week it was far too hot. My summer clothes hardly got a look in this year.

plunkplunkfizz · 24/09/2020 07:00

*everyone I’ve spoken to.

Fairyliz · 24/09/2020 07:50

One day, waters the garden fine. It’s the thought that we now have seven months of cold dark wet weather that makes me miserable.
It’s bad enough in normal years but this year with lockdown it will be hell.

oreshina · 24/09/2020 07:52

Rain on a caravan or conservatory roof is such an invigorating sound..
Reminds me of childhood
