To feel happy at the sound of the rain?

It’s been a long bloody summer. I don’t like the hot weather at the best of times but with Covid and everything else this summer seems to have dragged on forever. I’ve felt depressed for months now. I’m fed up, I’m sick of being hot, I’m sick of the streets been full of people “exercising” ... I’m just sick of everything.

About half an hour ago it all went dark outside. Then the rain started, really pelting down on the windows and I instantly felt happier. I feel cosy, safe ... the dogs are tucked up on the couch, I’ve got music on ... I’m just sat listening to the rain in the darkness feeling finally that little bit happier.

Is there such a thing as reverse SAD? I’ve always felt down in the summer and “content” in winter.

@Starksforthewin if you prefer cooler weather just move north.

I can assure you that where I live in the Midlands we have only had a few nice days and certainly have not had many days of 25 plus weather every month.

What we have had every month is days of rain and wind. In July and August I think we had some rain just about every day.

I have definitely had the heating on between lockdown starting and the end of July

Havaiana · 24/09/2020 09:56

What’s everyone’s favourite rain video on YouTube?

Mines this one

user1471538283 · 24/09/2020 15:30

I like the rain when it is quiet. I really liked it because it keeps people indoors. I usually love long hot days but I've hated this summer. Mainly because of people on furlough not understanding that I am still working and therefore do not want to hear their constant noise ...

Starksforthewin · 24/09/2020 17:00

Hmm, helpful contribution lynsey

Shall I say to you that if you prefer hotter weather just move South? Africa maybe? 😀

This thread is clearly labelled as being about rain lovers. My contribution is perfectly in keeping with the OPs theme and didn’t really need further analysis. Cheers though! 👍🏻

Well YABU and YANBU

I don’t like rain in the day. Much prefer warm sunny days

However

I have the greatest memories of sitting in my grandmother’s front porch swinging in the bench swing, listening to rain and counting down between thunder and lightening. To this day, I get excited when I hear thunder or see lightening

I really do think there is such a thing as reverse SAD and I think I get it.

Summer is too brash for me. I hate the sun on my head/directly in my eyes with no shade (hats, sunglasses and trees are my friends!) Plus I don't drive so getting anywhere and doing anything is a nightmare, coupled with a sweaty menopausal body.

South coast here - this summer has been horrendously hot, I really should move further north!

Woke this morning to the sound of the rain in my attic bedroom, watched the huge black clouds moving across the sea from my window, was fab and felt so good and energised.

I love the YouTube rain apps too, often use them in the summer or if I can't sleep.

TeachesOfPeaches · 24/09/2020 18:42

I come over all 'wuthering heights' in the rain Grin

TeachesOfPeaches · 24/09/2020 18:45

I remember when Rihanna's Umbrella was released in 2008, it was a very rainy summer

thepeopleversuswork · 24/09/2020 18:48

Yes totally.

Although I’m not one of these people who prefers cold weather. I actually love the heat and hate going to go outside in the rain.

But the sound of it on the roof makes me feel cosy and safe for some reason.

Must be some childhood nostalgia thing.

Bookriddle · 24/09/2020 18:56

This is the time of year i usually go camping, wild camping, not on a camp site, often go by myself!

Nothing beats sitting under a tarp, nice and dry with a fire going, even if its snowing i will go out, my sleeping bag goes down to -44 so its nice,!

Often struggled with my mental health, and this is one thing that really makes a difference for me

wolfmom · 24/09/2020 18:59

I'm the same and always joked I have reverse SAD. I feel so much more alive in the cooler weather

CharityRoyall · 24/09/2020 19:09

I enjoy summer and warm weather - I love barbecues and beer gardens and the beach and all that jazz. However I LOVE rainy days when I have nowhere to be and nothing to do - I love it when it goes a little bit dark outside and I can put a lamp on and feel cosy. Nothing nicer in the world to me.
I always feel much more energised when it’s cold as well - I think because I sleep better and the mornings are fresher. The darkness doesn’t bother me at all but I can see why it gets people down.

Mrs1989 · 24/09/2020 19:19

I’m exactly the same! Everybody I know laughs about it and thinks I’m a weirdo, but I’m obviously not alone in this! I’ve never coped well in hot weather but more recently I’ve really developed a dislike for bright weather too. I find it too harsh. I love it went it goes cooler and darker, and I love the sound of rain - very soothing. A thunderstorm after a spell of hot, dry weather is music to my ears! I don’t even mind going out for walks in lighter rain if I have a brolly! Autumn and winter feel so much cosier and it’s even better when it’s dark outside and the Christmas tree is up with the lights twinkling 😊

RightOnTheEdge · 24/09/2020 19:20

YANBU OP. I live in North Yorkshire and we had loads of hot, sunny days. My dc spent most of lockdown paddling in the local river.
I hated it, it makes me feel sluggish and sweaty.
I love autumn with its dark nights and cooler weather. When I can't sleep I get Alexa to play rain and storm sounds.

nosswith · 24/09/2020 19:26

SAD is about lack of light not too much rain. I welcomed the rain today as the farms and wild fields need it.

pigsDOfly · 24/09/2020 19:26

Very heavy rain here today off and on, mainly on.

It stopped around 5ish, long enough for me to get the dog out for a walk.

We got back just before it started again.

Fed the dog, made myself a cup of coffee. Satisfied dog was snuggled up beside me on the sofa asleep while the rain poured down the windows.

Lights on, blinds closed, dark outside and dog and me feeling cosy and smug because we managed to get a walk, albeit a short one, before it started raining again. Bliss.

marmite79 · 24/09/2020 19:39

I love dark cosy days!

Ginfordinner · 24/09/2020 20:09

I love dark cosy days!

I hate dark claustrophobic days when I can't see very well in dim light.

124lockstock · 24/09/2020 20:32

Rain produces negative ions in the air which are known to boost serotonin levels Smile I love the rain or a good thunderstorm.

anorangeaday · 24/09/2020 20:38

I love it. I hate being out in it, but when I’m inside with the fire on I love it being dark and cold and rainy

dizzyness · 24/09/2020 20:43

Me too. It's funny isint it. It's like a pressure has been lifted. Like I can just happily hibinate with my family.

As I've got older I'm beginning to dislike summer and the pressure to "make the most of it" everyday.

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 24/09/2020 20:44

I've found my people

mmgirish · 24/09/2020 20:49

I live in a hot place where it only rains a few times a year. My husband thinks it's hilarious to open the curtains every day and say "looks like a sunny day today..."

I would love a rainy day. I feel like it gives you an excuse to bunker down with a film or a good book.

StephenBelafonte · 24/09/2020 20:55

Humans are programmed to feel safe inside when it rains. It's a throwback to neaderthal times when cave people would be inside their caves with a fire keeping them warm - the sound of the rain outside meant that wild animals would also be seeking shelter and so not pose a threat.

keeprocking · 24/09/2020 20:59

My grass is loving it, beginning to look green again.
