to loathe the woman who told me off today in Tesco?

Ds1 (2.6) was in the front of the trolley, ds2 (6mo) was asleep in his car seat, correctly strapped into the top bit of the trolley. This woman approached me and said I would probably be told off for having ds1 in the front of the trolley. OK, I know it is not the safest place for him, but it is hardly the most dangerous. And he has happily shopped in this position for at least a year. And anyway, as long as my children are not in IMMINENT DANGER, why should she feel inclined to dispense unwanted and unsolicited advice, especially in such a passive aggressive manner ('Someone' is going to tell me off, or you are?)??? It is hard enough schlepping through the shops without people passing judgement.

lljkk that has reminded me of all the plastic tat I used to buy......
oops I wasn't very good at saying "no"

captainmummy · 10/10/2007 12:39

and shoppping online is no more hygienic - have you seen those spotty, greasy trolley-filling schoolleavers? Their trolleys are absol-bloody-utley huge, they block an entire aisle and do not move! And when you get your shopping you also get 1000 bags, each with one thing in. And you don't get inspiration for sunday dinner if you don't go round yourself. And you dont get any of the reduced stuff...I hate shopping but I hate not-shopping just as much.

sixlostmonkeys · 10/10/2007 12:41

"you also get 1000 bags, each with one thing in"

I tick the box that says no carrier bags, which means I get extra points - have a look, it's a great idea

captainmummy · 10/10/2007 12:46

I did that once 6lostmonkeys but then the tescos guy stood at the door and handed me each individual thing out of his big boxes. Took ages and I had to pile everything on the stairs and then take it all through to the kitchen individually....what do you do???

sixlostmonkeys · 10/10/2007 12:52

They are allowed to actually bring the stuff into your kitchen for you.
I prefer them to bring it to the door, and they always tell me not to rush as I take things through to the kitchen.
They have left me with the trays before now and they simply collect the empties next time. i decide whether I want them to do this or not.
I find it no more stressful than carrying stuff in from the car.

Don't let them pressure you into rushing - tbh I've never had a grumpy delivery man yet. they have all been lovely and cheery and we have a chat and a laugh as I move the groceries.

i also now have a spare drawer that isn't crammed with bags

captainmummy · 10/10/2007 13:02

you've never had a grumpy delivery man? I have, maybe 7 out of 10 are nice, but that's tesco....Depends how late/rushed they are i suppose. My neighbour was so shocked by her tesco delivery mans rudeness that she only shopps online with ocado now.

PoshCod · 10/10/2007 13:05

i smile at mine to make him nice
always bring it in

PoshCod · 10/10/2007 13:05

also one likes to watch cricket while he waits

oreGOREnianabroad · 10/10/2007 13:07

Cod,
?
who likes to watch cricket while waiting??

OP posts:
captainmummy · 10/10/2007 13:09

cricket is all about waiting isn't it?takes days

talulasmum · 10/10/2007 13:12

actually, having children sitting in the frount of a trolley is a health hazzard for other shoppers as your ds muddy shoes are all over it. other poeple have to use those you know. hope you dont shop where i do.

oreGOREnianabroad · 10/10/2007 13:13

Lets face it, shopping full stop, with or without kids, on-line or in rl, can be soul destroying. I once had a melt-down in M&S, wailing to dh, 'is this what our lives have become?'

OP posts:
oreGOREnianabroad · 10/10/2007 13:14

I doubt I do, Talula, but it sounds like plenty of other germs will have got there before me!

PoshCod · 10/10/2007 13:14

PoshCod · 10/10/2007 13:15

ofr a MIn or tow obv

oreGOREnianabroad · 10/10/2007 13:17

on-line has its merits, but I like to actaully touch the things I am buying.

I admit to a bit of a thrill to get a present from oneself in the post tho.

OP posts:
JoFan · 10/10/2007 13:20

i get lots of presents in the trolley

usually green and blacks

JoFan · 10/10/2007 13:21

then i say

oops how did that get in there?

and am forced to take it home

oreGOREnianabroad · 10/10/2007 13:23

one big (dis)advantage of on-line shopping: no impulse buys or chocolate indulgance.

OP posts:
oreGOREnianabroad · 10/10/2007 13:25

JoFan,
justification of overspend is another advantage of having kids in trolley! I can just blame it on them and claim ignorance!

'ooh, now how did yet another magazine and chocolate bar end up in there!??'

OP posts:
chloesmumtoo · 10/10/2007 13:25

I hate seeing kids in the actual trolly. Have two kids of my own but no way would I let them in the trolly. For a fact its not nice dirty shoes and smelly nappy bums where the next shopper has to put their food. Sorry. No, I would not say anything but would probably have a thought in my head with a tut tut. Not all food is wrapped properly - bakery bread for example.

JoFan · 10/10/2007 13:29

gosh who put that bottle of oyster bay in there?

t'would be rude to push past the queue to put that back

goingfriggincrazy · 10/10/2007 13:31

Thats why children shouldnt stand in the trolley-they could knock over all mummy's wine bottles

JoFan · 10/10/2007 13:38

things that go on trolley handles

sneezes
nose pickings
toilet hands
skin disorders
children's mouths

push at your peril

MrsSeanSlater · 10/10/2007 13:44

I had this in Asda . A member of staff marched up to me and ordered me to take DS1 (4 at the time) out of the trolley because it's 'dangerous'.
She really told me off like I was a little girl . I told her if I wanted to take the 'risk' it was up to me and marched off, leaving her looking very peeved.
I half thought she's call security and have them escort me from the building.
