What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

@lyralalala

That’s even funnier! Maybe we don’t notice these things ourselves as we get too stuck on deciding the first name.

RainbowReader · 21/09/2020 15:27

@haba I love Rory too but DH has the same problem Sad

Darwin another one for me.

stretchedmarks · 21/09/2020 15:27

Luna & Nova - named my two rabbits this so felt I couldn't use them even after they passed away a few years ago.

Delilah - love the name but couldn't get past the biblical connotations.

Partner vetoed Felix and Theodore, too.

emala · 21/09/2020 15:28

Micah - dh a Liverpool fan vetoed due to Micah Richards played for Man City at the time.
Also vetoed Miriam I think it's beautiful

RainbowReader · 21/09/2020 15:28

Rafferty

I love it so much though Sad

Frazzlerock · 21/09/2020 15:32

I love Rafferty too @RainbowReader but a friend named his baby Rafael and calls him Rafi for short, which is what we'd naturally use, so that's another one off the list!

newlabelwriter · 21/09/2020 15:38

Ignatius (shortened to Iggy) I loved it, still do. DH hated/s it though.

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/09/2020 15:39

My first son, I was set on Max for him. It was the only name that XH and I agreed on for a boy. Then, at 32 weeks, we were at a party in the house of a couple who had the most beautiful GSD dog. He was gorgeous and called Max.

Rethink time.

movingonup20 · 21/09/2020 15:40

I liked Joshua but we had 2 girls

Mutunus · 21/09/2020 15:42

There was a lad at daughter's school - surname Pipe and first name Dwayne.

leafeater · 21/09/2020 15:43

I wanted Hazel but my mother's response was 'My hairdressers called Hazel - it's a hairdresser name' Confused

VickySunshine · 21/09/2020 15:43

Ophelia

MinnieMountain · 21/09/2020 15:45

Minerva, Anita or Alexandra.

We had a boy.

30under · 21/09/2020 15:48

Victoria - name of OH's ex...

TheWho67 · 21/09/2020 15:48

Jake, but my OH already had a Jack.

jmh740 · 21/09/2020 15:50

I really wanted to call dd iona but ohs sister who he wasn't talking to at the time is called fionna and he said it was too similar, I liked Emily but oh eldest is called Emma, my grandad died when I was pregnant he was called Ken, I liked kendra but oh didn't like that either I wish I had fought harder for that to be her middle name, her middle name is Emily, she ended up with a first name which was a top 10 girls name for years.
It was even harder for us to pick a name for ds i wanted a Scottish name as oh is scottish but he ended up with a Welsh name instead!

Rainbowsparklesdust1921 · 21/09/2020 15:52

My dh & I had Maximus in mind for quite a while. But dh changed his mind. We picked another lovely name for him, which we absolutely love & he really suits it 😁

newnameforthis123 · 21/09/2020 15:56

@lepnee

Grace. I've always wanted this as a middle name for my DD, unfortunately DH didn't because his sister's middle name is Grace. Fast forward 2 years, my niece was born (BIL's daughter) and they chose the middle name Grace. Now I definitely can't have it! Sad
I don't get why that would make the name out of bounds!
CassandrasCastle · 21/09/2020 15:58

Kitty. I still love it, DP said no...

rosiethehen · 21/09/2020 15:59

Benedict. It's too posh for my part of the world and he'd have been eaten alive by the local kids.

HazelBite · 21/09/2020 16:01

DH is of Irish extraction and I like a lot of Irish names, however in 1981 "Seamus" seemed completely ott, so he was Patrick instead!
We now have a lovely ginger tom cat called Seamus.

Starlight39 · 21/09/2020 16:02

Niamh as I think she'd always be spelling it for people or explaining how to pronounce it. I think the Neve spelling isn't as nice.

Alloftheboys · 21/09/2020 16:06

I was convinced that Danger would make a great middle name (blame pregnancy hormones 🤦🏼‍♀️)

Warmhandscoldheart · 21/09/2020 16:07

I wanted Megan but ex DH said it was sheepdog's name

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/09/2020 16:09

Freya. Because it didn't go with our surname.
