What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

Anna - used by close friends who live nearby before dd was even conceived. We met that family at a baby group, and their son already had the same name as mine, so to use the same dd name 2-3 years later would have been a bit odd!
Isis - love this name, fortunately for dd, DH was more up to speed on current affairs than me 9 years ago.

Frederick - this was dh’s grandfather’s name and he wanted to use it if dc2 had been a boy; it was also the name of a friend‘S baby who died whilst I was exprcting dc2 fortunately dc2 was a girl.

George - we have surnames beginning with G and his initials would’ve been all G’s - too many.

MoaningMurlock · 21/09/2020 14:46

Sebastian - DH hates it.

Frazzlerock · 21/09/2020 14:46

I had Lydia top of my girls list while we were going through the looooooong process of TTC. I had always loved it since I was at school. DP''s step sister of course got pregnant very quickly and called her daughter Lydia Sad She didn't know I liked it so much, it was just coincidental but it really secretly pissed me off at the time!

I love Sebastian but we named one of our cats that (who we got while in the long TTC process) as I didn't think we'd ever get to use it.

I'm now (finally) 30 weeks pregnant and we have no idea what name we want now. DP is pretty relaxed about my choices and I do have a long list, but I just don't have the same love for any other names!

ShopTattsyrup · 21/09/2020 14:59

I always liked Ezra, however in the last few years anyone I've mentioned it to has said "As in George Ezra?" ... so probably not now Grin

myusernamewastakenbyme · 21/09/2020 14:59

I was going to call my son Jack....mum said 'ohh it makes me think of Jack Duckworth'......I decided to call him Luke instead.

WildCherryBlossom · 21/09/2020 14:59

I loved Delilah but DH would probably have scarred the child for life by constantly singing the Tom Jones song (badly).

OohThatCat · 21/09/2020 15:00

Sophitia, I'd love to use it as a name. But it's the name of a computer game character, and pronounced differently to how I would pronounce it. Plus people will just see it as Sophia!

Marmunia1975 · 21/09/2020 15:01

Trilby
Seraphina
Bronte.

I can't imagine shouting those names!

whatthehellis · 21/09/2020 15:04

You're going to laugh at me but I was adamant that if DC2 was a girl, we were naming her Raspberry Blush that's what I nicknamed it at the time, no idea why and we have an R surname so it would've been like Raspberry Reynolds (that's not my surname though). Thought it was a great idea at the time.

We had a boy Grin

TheDuchessofMalfy · 21/09/2020 15:06

@Tlollj
Ha ha! It’s a very common surname so it didn’t seem outing to mention it here!

I also discarded another favourite, Thomas, due to Tom Brown’s school days, although I think that’s sufficiently less well known not to be a problem.

Dawnlassie · 21/09/2020 15:07

Terminator

chunkyrun · 21/09/2020 15:09

Amos - I support a young man called Amos and it's just very much his name

Shay- we don't have a drop of Irish in us

Calvin- I love it but other half said it was Chavy and it ruined it for me

Kanen- other half said k names are aggressive

Cain- naughty boy name

WinterHasCome · 21/09/2020 15:13

My wife loves the name Autumn. Our surname is Winter. Big nope...

SimonJT · 21/09/2020 15:14

Shyam, but it doesn’t work too well in the UK.
Link, the main character in zelda, I used it for the dog instead.

Wondering what my next son/daughter will be called if I successfully have another is exciting.

MellowMelly · 21/09/2020 15:17

Amber was in serious consideration for me but a work colleague reminded me of my surname (the first part of it) and said did I want the baby to be known as a traffic light. How I hadn’t noticed it fails me to this day.

LadyofTheManners · 21/09/2020 15:18

Harry and Lola
DH hated both.
I did like Thomas and Amelia and my best mate pinched them and I was happy she did as I had done the baby thing by then. They are both my godchildren and know I named them too which makes it special
I also liked another girls make which I can't put here as it's potentially outing, but DH had an ex girlfriend who had that name and apparently she was crackers so he refused to even have it as a middle name Grin

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/09/2020 15:18

Phoebe was the name I always wanted for a girl but exh said no way as he couldn't stand Phoebe from Friends. We had a boy though so it didn't matter in the end.

WiggleSquiggle · 21/09/2020 15:19

I loved Cora, DH said no as it sounds like slang for bum hole?! HmmConfused

He loved Juno, I said no as all I imagine when I hear the name is Ellen Page with a big pregnant belly.

QueenofmyPrinces · 21/09/2020 15:20

Diana.

I loved it but my husband kept saying it was an old ladies name and there was no way we were having a child with that name Sad

(This was about 3 years ago).

Vivi0 · 21/09/2020 15:21

Huxley and Maximus.

DH vetoed both.

Coldilox · 21/09/2020 15:21

I always wanted Alex for a girl, but we had a boy. Still would have worked but I don’t love it as much for a boy. So never got to use it.

lyralalala · 21/09/2020 15:22

The friends of DH's SIL played rock, paper, scissors to decide who was going to point out that her plan to call her unborn son Jack after her Grandad might need a re-think after she married (and changed her name) a man with the surname Russell.

Apparently she wasn't sure what annoyed her more; the fact she hadn't thought of it or the fact her husband didn't see the issue.

Vivi0 · 21/09/2020 15:24

@lyralalala

I actually know a Jack Russell!

Whataboutnodontyouunderstand · 21/09/2020 15:25

I loved damian but nope! Tooo goth?! Aparently 😅😅 had a girl anyway :D
