What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

I liked Grace but I already know one

fruitandbarley · 23/09/2020 00:07

Merlin

Celestine70 · 23/09/2020 00:29

Overruled by husband.... Zak, Casper, Reuben, Charlotte and Katherine.

BluePeterVag · 23/09/2020 00:47

Also on my list was Jean. I love the name but is it ready for a come back? Plus Hi Jean! = hygiene Grin

SionnachRua · 23/09/2020 00:51

Anything ending in -a. We have relatives who would pronounce that as an -er sound and it would drive me absolutely crackers.

Otherwise anything very flouncy or ott. I love the sound of Vesper but I don't think I'd want to be Vesper Grin So that was out. Ditto Amity, Electra, Trinity.

I can definitely see Jean coming back!

Leontine · 23/09/2020 01:02

@SionnachRua I think Gene for a boy has started coming back.

I think they’re both cool.

Mamalexi343 · 23/09/2020 01:02

@Rainbo83

Cornelius or Gabriel. Every one laughed so much I decided against.
We both absolutely adored Gabriel but unfortunately DFIL would have torn it apart and seen it as a 'sissy' name (his words not mine).
pentaplanet · 23/09/2020 01:03

Madeline; Joanna; Julia...but DH had had ex's with these names!...and thought they were all "too old-fashioned"!

Hanywany · 23/09/2020 01:23

Was 5 months pregnant with ds2 and wed already settled on the name dalton, then watched insidious and decided it wasnt a good idea!!! Confused

Mintjulia · 23/09/2020 01:26

Vivienne Rose

I had a ds Smile

RubyAberdeen · 23/09/2020 01:29

Celeste.

When I was pregnant with DD2 this was my name. My friend said “ew, Celeste Moleste”. And that was it for me.

RubyAberdeen · 23/09/2020 01:30

My favourite names were Genevieve and India but DH was having none of it n

Mummadeeze · 23/09/2020 05:16

Tallulah was the girl’s name I had always loved but my partner didn’t feel the same. I also liked Jemima, but we agreed on something else.

MeridianB · 23/09/2020 06:20

@WingingIt101

I loved aurora for a girl. Dh veto’d as apparently it’s a name used by a lot of actresses in porn! Well and truly spoilt it for me!
I didn’t know this! It was a big fav of mine but when I was about four months in a new colleague joined with this name and she was so strange and creepy that it was quickly removed from the list.
CleanQueen123 · 23/09/2020 06:39

Astrid, Clementine, and Mina. I got the last one in as a middle name but the other two were firmly vetoed.

I now intend to use the other two as names for the matching English Bull Terriers I'll have when DD leaves home to cure my empty nest syndrome Grin

CleanQueen123 · 23/09/2020 06:40

Sorry, appalling grammar in the last sentence!

MagpieSong · 23/09/2020 07:27

Sebastian, but there were so many at the time (4 just in hospital ward) that we chose a different name.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 23/09/2020 07:57

Lucy.
Vetoed by DH even as a middle name.

ThighthighOfthigh · 23/09/2020 07:59

I had Joshua picked out until ex said 'push for little Joshy' while I was in labour 🤮

MadisonAvenue · 23/09/2020 08:08

Liam for our now 20 year old.

We’d definitely have gone with that had it not been for the boy called Liam next door who bullied our other son.

Notusuallydown · 23/09/2020 08:56

Off the subject a bit, I once met a lovely family whose surname was Carr, The Dc were Austin Morris, Royce and Mini, and the dog was Rover.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 23/09/2020 09:26

We were utterly stuck for boy names, and I kept coming back to James, every time. But it was my nephew's name, so just not an option. For months, we'd go round and round with options, and then, like a goldfish, I'd say 'I don't know why we're having this conversation - I love the name James' and DH would have to remind me every time why we couldn't use it. It just felt like the totally right name.

We had a girl luckily.

BetterBeHomeByMidnight · 23/09/2020 09:35

I liked Tom but it sounded silly with our surname!

FOKKYFC · 23/09/2020 09:36

@ThighthighOfthigh

I had Joshua picked out until ex said 'push for little Joshy' while I was in labour 🤮
Yep, that'd do it . . .
QueenBlueberries · 23/09/2020 09:38

I like Sarah for a girl, simple and elegant. It's my husband's ex girlfriend's name so that was a no. I like Hugo for a boy but DH said it's too pretentious.
