What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

Captain for a boy. I met a baby boy called Captain and I thought it was so cool! My husband insisted that it is a title to be earned, and not a name.

I loved Fritha for a girl, as I was a big fan of "The Snow Goose". Didn't sound quite right with my surname though.

Brot64 · 21/09/2020 16:12

Terminator and Kermit

GrinGrinlove this thread. Wanted Ophelia for first DD exh vetoed said a name for unhinged womenConfused. I still like it.

Rupert for 2nd DS my mother couldn't stop laughing about it ended up with Balthazar. Wilhelm for 3rd DH vetoed sounded off with a Swedish surname and finally wanted Churchill but for a girl again sounded totally off with Swedish surname and my father who is German wouldn't hear of it.

Gatehouse77 · 21/09/2020 16:16

DH vetoed quite a few names and I was teaching at the time so that put me off quite a few too!

Sebastian
Kit
Elliot
Claudia
Nell

are some of them.

dementedma · 21/09/2020 16:23

Simon, but too many ms and ns in our surname so it sounded odd

CoronaIsShit · 21/09/2020 16:23

Eden for DS3. Quite pissed off now as he would definitely have suited it but DH insisted it was only for girls.

Evangeline was what he would have been called if he was a girl as I absolutely love that name but didn’t hear it until long after I had DD1/2

Francesca for DD1 but again DH didn’t like it as his cousin’s ex was called that and she was a bitch Hmm.

DH wanted to call our twin boys Alberto and Luigi. Thank god I won that one!

Alexa. We had it on our list didn’t find out baby’s gender. DS came along we decided to save it for next baby. Next pregnancy really want to use Alexa or Alex but just can’t bring ourselves because of what’s just come out and everyones starting to buy....bloody Amazon Alexa’s

We had a boy, but my favorite girls names are Pearl, Violet and Sadie. Our surname doesn't sound good with Pearl or Violet and I used Sadie for my beloved dog who died :(

We may use Sadie as a middle name in the future, but I know my in-laws will think it's really weird we're naming a baby after the dog. They're not animal lovers :(

monty09 · 21/09/2020 16:49

Pippa/ piper but due to last name would have been to many Ps.

PablosHoney · 21/09/2020 16:50

Noelle, Cecile and James. DH hates first two and my SIL got in first with the latter

pointythings · 21/09/2020 16:52

I really liked Megan for DD2, but DH already had a niece called that, so we didn't.

I'm glad now, as she has turned into a rabid Trump supporter of the worst kind.

vraimenthan · 21/09/2020 16:59

I love the name Raphael but could never because I have a leonardo. They'd be teased forever

SerenDippitty · 21/09/2020 17:13

The friends of DH's SIL played rock, paper, scissors to decide who was going to point out that her plan to call her unborn son Jack after her Grandad might need a re-think after she married (and changed her name) a man with the surname Russell.

I’m sure a Jack Russell used to play cricket for England.

Bbang · 21/09/2020 17:15

Marlowe DP mental ex-wife got wind of it and called it her new dog.

NoisyNoisyNoise · 21/09/2020 17:17

Loved Martha, but it rhymes with his surname!

Defaultuser · 21/09/2020 17:18

@Stoichio aww why did you think you couldn't give your children Scottish names? I'm a Scot but I've given my son an Italian name. I hope no-one thinks that's strange Smile

lilmishap · 21/09/2020 17:19

Arthur. Because I pronounce it Arfer and that was bad apparently.

Susannahmoody · 21/09/2020 17:23

Quentin

I was actually named after my grandmother's Great Dane, the dog my mother had growing up...
NoraEphronsneck · 21/09/2020 17:25

@Cocomarine

I love the name Mercedes. But struck it from the list quickly, as I might as well have been calling her Chardonnay.
I know a Mercedes and Chardonnay who are sisters Grin
oreshina · 21/09/2020 17:30

Shoshana

Dailyhandtowelwash · 21/09/2020 17:33

Helena, because DH and I couldn't agree on how to pronounce it, which felt like a bad start.

Japa · 21/09/2020 17:42

Madeleine
I think it is a beautiful name but associate it with Madeleine McCann and her family. It is tainted with sadness for a stolen girl and the nightmare for her family.

Babyroobs · 21/09/2020 17:45

I wanted to call my dd Anna but then a few months before she was born my brother and his wife had a baby girl and called her Hannah and just thought it was too similar.
