What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

Rebecca - or Rebekah.

Couldn't use it - baby was a boy.

I wanted a name that could be used for both a boy or a girl for my oldest child because I didn't want to learn the sex before birth. I chose Marcel/ Marcelle. My ex-husband was totally okay on the name until the day our son was born. He was convinced we were having a girl so he thought it was a great girl's name but absolutely hated it for our son. He said it was "wimpy". So it didn't get used.

I am half-Mexican and I wanted to name a daughter after a character in my favorite Mexican movie: Bélen, pronounced "Beh-lehn". My English husband loved it and we didn't think the name would be difficult to pronounce in Manchester. That was until we told my FIL and he said, "Bélen like Bellend?" Never mind.

Rupert ,every one was horrified 😂

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 21/09/2020 14:22

Alexa, thanks Amazon 🙄

honeylulu · 21/09/2020 14:22

For my son:

Orson (there was a band called Orson around at the time and we didn't like them). Also with our surname it sounded a bit like "'Orse and cart".

Eugene - my husband loved this but the winner (or runner up ) from big brother that year was Eugene.

Pablo and Dante - I liked these names but we're not remotely Spanish or Italian.

Daughter:

Lucinda - shortened version was too like my own name.

Allegra - thought she'd end up getting called "legs" at school.

Emma - husband loved this name but my ex had just named his daughter Emma.

Honey - H said it was a lapdancer's name.

My user name is an amalgam of my love for Honey and Lucinda!

Balthazar. It just sounds amazing but you'd have to be very rich or very famous or Rees-Mogg to get away with that.

Also loved Jasper but my gran said it was what the baddies in old films were called. Looking back I have no idea why the hell I took any notice- I hate what she named her son.

Laufeythejust · 21/09/2020 14:25

I love the nickname Millie but other half is from Northern Ireland and apparently there it means chav. Gutted.

TinyMetalBirds · 21/09/2020 14:26

Linnet, I love it but it does not sound great in an Essex accent.
Edward because our surname starts with D and DH thought that didn't work (I still disagree).
Samuel because "it sounds like a middle class person trying to be working class". Still mystified on that one.

OnlyLittleMissOrganised · 21/09/2020 14:26

Matilda for a girl and Sebastian for a boy. Both vetoed by my DH. Matilda for being a girl in a book and Sebastian because he doesnt like Sebastian Vettel.

We decided on a beautiful name anyway so I dont mind.

whippetwoman · 21/09/2020 14:27

When I was pregnant with DS2, my partner and I were watching a lot of X-Files box sets and we both loved the name Fox, as in Fox Mulder. We really, really wanted to....but we just couldn't do it in the end.

I have also not been allowed Hamish (we're not Scottish) and Barnaby.

Nearly all of my girls names were (sensibly) vetoed including Frederica and Albertine. Yes really.

CheshireDing · 21/09/2020 14:28

Walter, as I thought Walt was such a cool shortened version.

DH wasn’t convinced.

Yubaba · 21/09/2020 14:28

I liked George or Sebastian for ds1 but DH hated both of them, he wanted to call him Zeus or Thor and I vetoed those!
We went with Alexander in the end but it took 4 days for us to name him!

MrsAvocet · 21/09/2020 14:30

Mercedes. But in this country it is too misunderstood - and mispronounced.
And Alexander because a very close relatuve on my DH's side used it first. I was upset at the time because its a name that has existed in every generation of my family for a very long time but neither of my siblings had used it, but that's life, nobody owns a name. I did consider still using it as a middle name but my DH was dead set against it so we didn't.

Malacath · 21/09/2020 14:30

I quite liked Zoe but thought it was too similar to Sophie (first DC), especially when shouted from afar like across the playground.

For DC2 I loved the name Lucy. Was scared to tell DH in case he vetoed it. He agreed it was lovely so we were all set. Was sure it would be another girl but we agreed on a boy's name for just in case whilst waiting to be taken to theatre for caesarean. Yup, DC2 turned out to be a boy Grin

WingingIt101 · 21/09/2020 14:32

I loved aurora for a girl. Dh veto’d as apparently it’s a name used by a lot of actresses in porn! Well and truly spoilt it for me!

LilaButterfly · 21/09/2020 14:32

Thea, most my family is german background and struggle with "th'

flourbroach · 21/09/2020 14:34

Holly, because teamed with our surname it would have been ridiculous.

VirginiaWolverine · 21/09/2020 14:34

Constance because our surname is similar to that of a famous Constance.

Isis

Loveday, because DH hated it. It turns out DD hates it, too, and is glad we gave her a different name.

Lucifer, for obvious reasons.

Hugo, because I thought it would make him sound like an investment banker. My nephew ended up being called Hugo, though, so I still get to have one in the family.

AriesTheRam · 21/09/2020 14:34

Rocky. So ive called my dog it insteadGrin

crikeycrumbsblimey · 21/09/2020 14:34

Idris as a welsh name - was after the dragon in Ivor the Engine but now more about the actor.

itsamadmadworld · 21/09/2020 14:37

@TheGoogleMum my boyfriend wants to call his daughter if he has one Evie after the Pokemon, I've ruled it out 😂
I wanted a double barrelled name but everyone said it sounded too chavvy

HillaryWhitney · 21/09/2020 14:38

DH wouldn't let me call DS2 Merlin

Tlollj · 21/09/2020 14:38

@TheDuchessofMalfy
Snap!
My dd has the same issue. Vetoed Charlie too.

Magpiecomplex · 21/09/2020 14:42

I wanted Valentine but DS missed it by a day... Also my husband refused to consider it!

Nikhedonia · 21/09/2020 14:42

Persephone & Tabitha for girls and Sebastian for a boy (ex-DH vetoed them all Sad)
