What names did you like but couldn't call your child?

When I was expecting, we were discussing baby names. Me & my husband liked the name Sydney for a girl. We had a conversation about names with my brother and sister in law (who were also expecting) and told them we liked the name Syndey.

A few weeks later it was Halloween. My phone rang, it was a withheld number but answered it anyway. I said "hello" & then the voice down the phone said "hello Sydney", followed by a knock at the door. My husband answered it, and there was someone in a scream mask, followed by laughter. The mask came off... and it was my brother! (He has always been a bit of a teaser, thank goodness I'm not of a nervous disposition!)

My daughter was born a few months later, and she is not called Sydney.

So what names have you liked but couldn't call your child?

Soooo many, my DH and I are not massively on the same wavelength when it comes to names.

He vetoed all biblical names 😂

Alfiemoon1 · 21/09/2020 13:47

Liam but to similar to dh name
Francesca but didn’t think dh would be able to spell it lol

unimaginativeusernamehere · 21/09/2020 13:47

Hamish and Angus - too Scottish for two English people living in England. I did give my son a Scottish name but not that Scottish.
I have a lot of Scottish family (inc. Dad, grandparents, aunties/uncles and half siblings) and lived in Scotland for six years - I would love to be Scottish and live in Scotland! Such a shame to be a sassenach...Outlander has just made it worse

Tbf they're too scottish for most of us living in Scotland too Grin

What name did you choose out of interest?

schafernaker · 21/09/2020 13:48

Orla, love the name and then whilst visiting Irish family one pointed out it was Gaelic for vomit unless spelt Órla. I knew the fada would be dropped in England 🙈

WettnWild · 21/09/2020 13:48

I really like Sasha but my last name has already has an ‘ash’ sound.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 21/09/2020 13:51

If either DS's had been girls they would have been Phryne. One more DS would have been Gaius.

MrsToothyBitch · 21/09/2020 13:51

No DC yet but friends laughed when I mentioned Tabitha as a name I like because the shortening rhymes with my name- and has only a letter different. Killed it for me Sad

Aweebawbee · 21/09/2020 13:51

My favourite boy's name combined with DH surname was a famous serial killer. Shame!

FelicityBob · 21/09/2020 13:52

Ella. Absolutely love it but couldn’t have Sam and Ella

AdultierAdult · 21/09/2020 13:54

Sebastian as our surname starts and ends with an “s” and we thought it sounded too hissy. Plus if he had had a lisp it would have been one hell of a name.

Sexnotgender · 21/09/2020 13:55

@FelicityBob

Ella. Absolutely love it but couldn’t have Sam and Ella
My dogs are called Sam and Ella😂
Candyflosscookie · 21/09/2020 13:56

I really liked a very old biblical name but DH pointed out with our long surname it was a heck of a mouthful. We ended up choosing a five letter easy name instead. My next pet may get the original name Smile

OutingMyself · 21/09/2020 13:56

Seth. I have an ex called it. Also, I didn't have a boy Grin

Lockheart · 21/09/2020 13:56

Lilith. I LOVE Lilith. But no Grin

I also really like Alois (a-low-ees, emphasis on the 'ees') for a boy. But again, no.

BitOfANameChange · 21/09/2020 13:58

Apparently, mum wanted to call me Melissa. But it didn't work with our surname, which began with an S, and contained more SS. Wouldn't have minded that name. Otherwise, she wanted to call me Tabitha. Thank fuck dad overruled her there Grin

RUOKHon · 21/09/2020 13:58

Max. Our surname is a noun so it wouldn’t go well together.

I also loved Saoirse, but I know there are members of our family who would never have been able to spell or pronounce it properly and that would have wound me up.

mumsymummum · 21/09/2020 13:58

I was trying to sell my DH on Zebedee or Jethro before we found out we were expecting a girl.

RightOnTheEdge · 21/09/2020 14:03

I liked Tia when I was pregnant with dd but my ex is Brazilian and it means auntie in his country.
He said it would be very weird for his family.

lyralalala · 21/09/2020 14:04

Esme - the name of a baby in DH's family who died when she was just a toddler

Ethan - name of a kid who bullied DS1

Thaila - I have an absolute fear of giving my kids a "weird" name or one that gets them picked on at school after being saddled with a ridiculous name (which I changed at 14) by my own parents and it just felt too risky.

TheDuchessofMalfy · 21/09/2020 14:08

I like the name Eva, unfortunately exh’s surname is Brown, which has exactly the same sound as the name of Hitler’s wife Eva Braun! So no.

I also like the name Daniel, and although Dan Brown is less of a problem that Hitler’s wife I also though that was a no.

Mysa74 · 21/09/2020 14:10

Isla, but I married a man who's surname is white Grin

Seriouslymole · 21/09/2020 14:12

Vikram. We are resolutely Caucasian and I wasn't sure it would have worked. Shame as I LOVE it.

reenon · 21/09/2020 14:13

Heath

But our surname is Rowe...

Emeraldshamrock · 21/09/2020 14:13

I wanted a beautiful Irish name for DS after 2 days of DP from NI not being able to pronounce it without making a funny face after months of practice I changed it.
I regret it.

minipie · 21/09/2020 14:17

Haha reenon same problem here, except the name I liked was Rowena Grin
