@Goldenbear

If you read over the thread, you will find an answer to your very profound, 'And?'.
I just find it weird that it’s Lauren Laverne of all people OP fixated on.

Liverbird, I’m a HJC supporter as well. Actually, come to think of it, most blues I know are.

Bearnecessity · 21/09/2020 13:38

No weirdness here Phil....Lauren Laverne was just the one I found out about this week. It could have been any of the over-inflated salaried BBC staff. If you look at my opening message I clearly refer to the BBC as I have said previously.The fixation appears to be yours....

I like Kenickie but I’m not THAT into them.

The mention of the high BBC salaries seems to me a way of attacking and seeking to diminish the BBC, which some Tories would love to ruin or abolish as it does not dance to its tune.

@PickAChew

Oh, there we go "Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright is on about £475,000."

The fact that he gets paid more than Lozza is an absolute travesty.

The fact that he gets paid more than anybody is a travesty.

He must have dirt on the higher ups...

@Goldenbear

I don't think it makes you a commie to question the absurd pay of those employed by what is a public-funded organisation! As I highlighted earlier there are plenty of people that could be recruited fairly and objectively for these jobs that would be fine doing them, a good example of this is The One Show- I don't even like the show but it proves how no one bats an eyelid when these people do leave the BBC for more money. This isn't the private sector, there should be much more scrutiny and accountability, where are the fair recruitment practices, nowhere to be seen! How are their recruitment practices going to reflect the diversity of society when they are not based on mertiocracy.
“These people...” What people? In what sense has Lauren Laverne not been recruited fairly and objectively? She’s was brought in from local commercial radio, helped grow the audience at 6Music, been a popular presenter for them and made her way through the schedule to the prime show. She’s now being rewarded with a salary which in the “real world” is ludicrous, but in the world of showbiz and media is relatively modest. (Amanda Holden reportedly earns £1.5m for co-hosting the breakfast show on Heart, Chris Evans gets £2m a year for his Virgin breakfast show. Top broadcasters on commercial radio are paid more than the BBC - and are regularly poached, see Evans, Eddie Mair, John Pienaar etc)

“Scrutiny and accountability?” You only know about her salary because it’s made publicly available.

It does make me laugh how you can't question absurd pay on here without being accused of being a BBC bashing Tory commie.. its like something out of allo..allo...

No one complains at the legions of useless men being paid the net worth of a small country‘

Got to spend all that license fee money they rob from us somewhere

@MrsTerryPratchett

No one complains at the legions of useless men being paid the net worth of a small country.

This.

They don't? The likes of Lineker are constantly berated for their BBC salary.

I read Huw Edwards earns a few hundred grand a year just to read the news via an autocue. And we pay for this. It's absurd.

Emmapeeler2 · 23/09/2020 21:29

I really like Lauren Laverne and couldn't give a toss what she is paid by my taxes. (That said, I don't think she is the right presenter for DD because she doesn't delve into people's answers enough. Just my opinion.)

Also love Zoe Ball. So what if she lost 1m listeners? We all know why that is. I liked Chris Evans but was actually quite relieved when Zoe took over and prefer her show.

Mollscroll · 23/09/2020 21:34

I did find it depressing when those numbers came out. Those two in particular are not special talents. Not especially funny, smart, interesting. LL has been pretty unsuccessful at DID and Zoe Ball is just a bit inane. There are many more talented women out there.

TheCrowFromBelow · 23/09/2020 22:30

OP if you are incensed abiut what LL earns for working really hard and being entertaining and informative, wait until you hear about the Biliions of our taxes the government has "spaffed up the wall" and given to their mates for doing absolutely fuck all. You will be fumming.

Bearnecessity · 24/09/2020 08:53

Hi The Crow I am too old to be incensed or fuming about any of it to be fair more bewildered that all of it still goes on and nothing gets done about it.

I think she's fabulous, she doesn't just play music but she has fantastic music knowledge too.

FindMeInTheSunshine · 24/09/2020 09:23

I struggle with this to a degree when comparing to other roles where people work hard, but fundamentally, if I were doing any kind of job where 1.6million people benefitted from my skills and experience (whether it was radio DJ, blogging, online training, author, whatever fits) I honestly can't see it as unreasonable that each of them pays 25p a year for my efforts. Sadly, that's never going to happen for me, but hats off to anyone who manages it, and, given how hard women normally have to fight to get equal pay I feel a degree of respect for them.

IrmaFayLear · 24/09/2020 09:30

I find it ironic that some people on here applauding LL’s salary (and her ilk) are the same as those who were cheering about raising taxation when Labour mooted £80k as being “rich”.

So would you deem LL rich? And, furthermore, what do you think about BBC employees calling themselves “self-employed” (when they don’t work anywhere else) in order to avoid (not evade, note) tax?
